DOOR CLOSER Filed May 18. 1951 22' [Fax 2156455497,
INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 4, 1932 TENTb IVAN E. BEELER, or SAN FRANCISCO; cAnIEoRi IA noon cnosnn Application filed May 18,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door closing devices and more particularly to one whlch is designed for use in conjunction with swinging doors to automatically return same from either of its open positions to that of a closed position. I
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illus- I trated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a door frame and mounting for a swinging door, disclosing by full and dotted lines the relative arrangement of the several connec- V tions of the present invention therewith.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a portion of the winding drum and illustrative of the retracting element.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken through the drum showing the relative arrangement of the spring element.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the invention.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally the upper rail of a door frame 11 having a door 12 therefor swingably supported within the door opening upon pintles 13 embedded in the upper rail and sill respectively.
All of the above is of the usual and well known construction incidental to that of door mountings and forms no part of the present application for letters patent but are mentioned merely for purposes of illustration in bringing forward the novel advantages of the present invention.
The invention primarily resides in the provision and arrangement of an elongated box like housing 14 projecting upwardly through an opening provided in the upper rail 10 of the door frame and provided with attaching flanges 15 recessed or otherwise mortised 1931. Serial ntlssaa o.
within the surface thereof whereby the normal swinging motions of the door will be unimpaired. y
A pin member'16 wholly disposed within the confines of the box like housing 14, terminates to provide heads 17 engageable with the outer surfaces and side walls of said housing. A spring element, generally desig nated as at 18, of the Archimedian spiral type, has its outer end secured to a shaft 19; the latter being supported between the walls of the housing at a point above and in spaced parallelism with the shaft or pin member 16. The innermost end of the spring is fixed to a drum member 16 in the manner suggested in Figure 3 of the drawing.
Roller members 20 journaled in spaced parallelism provide a guide passage 21 therebetween through which a flexible member 22 is passed. Said flexible element is wound within a recess 24 located in the upper rail of the door 12.
As understood from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing the spring element 18 will yieldably induce the door to occupy a normally closed position irrespective of whether the door is actuated from either side. The roller members 20 will materially enhance the life and facilitate smoother action on the part of the flexible connecting element whereby the door may be actuated in the manner contemplated with a minimum degree of wear.
The attaching flange 15 carries headed studs 25 upon opposite sides of the entrance for the housing which depend therefrom to journally support disk members 26 arranged at right angles to the roller members 20. These disk members are designed for engagement with the flexible member 22 to prevent chafing of the latter against the edges of the recess 24. As shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, the disk members are projected within the recess 24: to clear the door when the latter is swung to either side of the door frame.
The invention is susceptible of 'various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, Whatis olaimedisz v .r
A door closing apparatus comprising a door frame, a drum member j ournaled Withnected therewith, an attaching element upon the upper rail of the door, roller members journally supported within the housing and 1 spacedapart to provide a guide passage therebetween, a flexible connecting element fixed to andowound upon said drum memher and projecting through the passageway Y for connection Withithe attaching element,
and disk members journaled upon the housing in flrightangularly disposed relation to the 7 roller members for'engagelnent With that v portion of said flexible connecting element projecting through the passageway 1 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
