This invention relates to machines for forming outwardly turned flanges on the uppers of boots and shoes and is illustrated as embodied ina machine designed for forming such flanges on the rear portions of the uppers of stitchdown shoes.
In the manufacture of certain kinds of shoes, for example stitchdown shoes, the marginal portion ofthe upper is turned outwardly and secured, for example, by staples, stitches or cement, to the projecting margin of the sole. In order to facilitate the lasting and securing operations it is desirable that the upper,'at least at the end portions, be formed in its outturned position prior to the securing together of the upper and sole. Since the rear portion or heel end of the upper has incorporated therein a relatively thick and strong heel end stiffener or counter, it is particularly important that the marginal portion of this part of the upper, including the counter, be formed in outturned relation prior to its being secured to a sole.
Objects of this invention are to provide convenient and improved means for enabling the upper of a stitchdown shoe to be formed with an outturned flange quickly and easily, and with a well defined crease line between the side of the upper and the flange.
With these objects in view, the illustrated machine comprises a form corresponding in shape to the end portion of a shoe, illustrated as the heel portion, the form being movable endwise; for example, the form may, as illustrated, be held by spring means against which it may be moved endwise and forwardly. As illustrated also, pivoted end-embracing members are. arranged for closing movement relatively to the form and for movement endwise of the form, said members being adapted to engage the upper and shape it over the rear end of the form, further movement of the shaping members serving to movethe form endwise and forwardly.
Adjacent to the bottom face of the illustrated 7 form are pivoted Hanging and pressing members or wipers, the pivot of which is fixed as to movement with the form. so that endwise movement of the form by the upper shaping means causes the .marginal portion of the upper projecting beyond the bottom of the form to be turned outwardly at its rear end. As illustrated, means operated by movement of the form is provided for eflecting separation of the flanging members about their pivot to cause them to turn the side portions of the margin of the upper outwardly against the end-embracing members during said endwise movement of the form. All portions of the projecting margin of the upper and counter at the rear end of the upper are thus formed into an outturned flange and are pressed between the end-embracing members and the flange forming members or wipers.

The machine comprises a vertical standard 10 which may be positioned upon a work bench or table or upon a suitable'stand and which is adapted to carry shoe engaging members which comprise a work supporting form or mold 12 and means for engaging the outside of a shoe upper supported upon the form and for pressing it against the form. The said form comprises a member shaped generally similarly to that part of a shoe along which the heel end stiffener or counter normally lies, i. e., that part which extends from the back ofthe heel forwardly to just in front of the breast line. Theform is mounted on a vertical stud lsecured at its lower end in a boss 15 projecting from the standard 10 and projecting into a bore 16 inthe form. A spring 18 is housed between the top of the stud'l i and the end of the bore and supports theform normally in the position shown in Fig. 1. Two other vertical bores 20 are provided in the form one on eitherside of the bore 16 and within these bores are mounted spring-pressed plungers 22 which aid the springlS in supporting the form in the position shown. Thismounting of the form allows'the latter to be depressed against the. action of the springs at certain times as hereinafter described. The means aforesaid for engaging an upper and for pressing it against the form comprises a pair of upper engaging members 24 which are pivoted on a horizontal pivot pin 26 to a vertical stem 28 which is free to move vertically in a bearing 30 carried (in a manner hereinafter described) by the standard 10. The members '24 have portions 32 shaped, as indicated inFig. 1, so that when moved toward each other about their pivot 26 until arrested by contact between faces 33 on the members they form between them a gap slmilar in shape and size tothat of the form 12;
their lower ends to pins in the members 24, the
said springs therefore tending to swing the members upwardly about the pivot pin 26. The members 24 are provided with cam slots 3S-which, as shown in Fig.1, are straight at the upper part and for the greater portion of their lengthbut are curved inwardly toward each other near their'lower ends.
.Horizontal pins 40 secured to the standard 10 project into'the slots and carry rolls 42 which engage within the cam slots 38. From a consideration of Fig. l'it will be clear that a downward movement imparted to the me1nhers 24 will cause them first of all to swing toward each other by reason of the'engagement of the cam rolls 42 and the cam slots 38 and that continued downward movement will cause them to move bodily downward in closed position. The action of the said cam rolls and cam slots will also, upon the rising of the members 24 from theirlowered position and-toward the end of their upward movement, cause the members to move away from each other about their common pivot 26, the said upward and downward movement being allowed by the mounting of the stem 28 so that it is freely movablevertically.
Downward movement of the members 24 is brought about by'means of rods 44 which are coupled 'at' their lower endsto a crossbar 46 which is connected to atreadle 48. In order to form an outwardly projecting flange around the portion of the upper seated on the form 12 and gripped by the members 24, there are provided close to the rear side or bottom of the form two flange forming members or wipers 50, 50 (Fig. 3) which are adapted to be moved apart as the form descends to turn over into an outwardly projecting flange themargin of the upper which projects beyond the rear edge of the form.
Each wiper consists of a plate 50 which is rounded at its upper end to the shape of one half of the heel end of a shoe bottom and has secured integrally therewith a stud 52 the cross-section of which has the shape of a sector of a circle the angle between the straight sides of which is less than 180 degrees and the two studs enter together into a horizontal bearing in the standard. The bearing' into which thestuds 52 enter is circular and as the straight sides of each of the studs subtend an angle of less than 180 degrees between them the studs can rotate in' the bearing an extent limited by contact between adjacent faces of the studs. Each of the plates is provided with one half of a cam slot 54 (the latter being formed in the adjacent and'meeting faces of the plates), which cam slot is pear-shaped and is positioned with its pointed end forwardly with respect to the form 12 ordownward as seen in Fig. 3. A pin 56 extending rearwardly from the form passes into the cam slot 54 and, upon downward movement of the form 12, engages the sloping sides of the pear-shaped cam slot and causes the wiper plates 50 to swing about the studs 52 at their upper ends in a direction away from each other against the'action of spring-pressed plungers 58 which bear against pins 60 secured to the wiper plates. The wiper plates 50 and the form 12are so arranged that when the form is-in its highest positionv the uppermost point of thatportion of the form representing the heel-seat face (i. e., the left-hand face as seen in Fig. 2) is level with'the top of the wiper plates 50, 50.
An edge gage 62 against which the edge of the upper is adapted to abut when the upper is first positioned on the form 12 and before theupper clamping members 2-4are caused to engage the upper is provided in the illustrative embodiment. This edge gage comprises a vertical horseshoe-shaped plate 62 (Fig. 3) the limbs of whichlie close to the backedge of the wipers and the plate is carried upon a horizontal pin 64 which is adj ustable toward and'away from the form 12 to vary the amount of upper to be flanged over,
a set-screw 66being provided to retain it in adjusted position.
In the operation of the machine, assuming it is desired to mold an outwardly turnedfla'nge around the heel end of a shoe upper, the heel end portion of the upper is placed over the form 12 with the edge of that margin which is to be out-turned in contact with the edge'gage'62 aforesaid all around the heel part. After positioningthe upper correctly on the form (i. e., after seeing that the backstrap overlies the highest part of the form) the operator depresses the treadle 48 which moves the clamping members 24 downwardly and causes them to swing toward each other. This-causes them toengage the upper loo around the side of the form first and operates ward movement of thetreadle causes the upl per clamping members to carry the form downwardly with them to an extent limited by contact between the bottom of the form and the boss supporting the stud 14. This downward movement of the form through the action of the pin 56 causes the wiper plates 50 to swing outwardly to wipe the margin of the upper which projects toward the edge gage 62 beyond the bottom of the form outwardly and press the margin meanwhile against flat rear faces 67 on the upper clamping members 24. After thetreadle has been held depressed to its lowest position for a short time it is allowed to rise to enable the various parts to return to inoperative position and the shoe upper is then removed from the form.
The rear faces 67 of the upper clamping members 24 against which the margin of the upper is pressed by the wiper plates 50 in their wiping movement are retained in the desired close position to the wipers (leaving only a gap of suflicient thickness to accommodate the upper materials) by a horizontal stem 68 which carries the bearing for the vertical stem 28, thesai-d stem being urged rearwardly of the machine to a definite position (determined by faces on the bearing 80 and the machine standard) by means of a spring 72. The fact that the levels of the top of the wiper plates and thetop of the heel-seat face of the form 12 areatthe same height ensures that the highest part of the upper will be )roperly supported by the form 12 and the wiper plates5O when it is engaged by the upper clamping devices 24 and will help to avoid the formation of creases in the upper as the upper engaging members 24 come into engagement wit-hit.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a movable form to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, means for pressing the upper in engagement with the form and for moving the form, and means effective upon movement of the form to turn outwardly the projecting margin of a porr tion of the upper.
2. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a movable form to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion proj ecting beyond the bottom of the form, means for pressing the upper in engagement with the form and for moving the form; and means held from movement with the form and constructed and arranged to turn outwardly t e projecting margin of a. portion of the upper upon movement ofthe form.
3. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its margin projecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing meansadapted to shape the upper to the form, means for moving the form embracing means so to shape the upper and to move the form endwise, and means engaging the projecting margin of the upper to cause it to be turned outwardly by said endwi'se movement of the form.
4. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a movable form to receive the end portion of an upper with itsmarginal portion projecting beyond-the bottom of the formjmea-ns for pressing the upper into engagement with the form and for moving the form, pivoted memers held from movement with the form for causing the projecting margin of the rear portion of the upper to beturned' outwardly, and means operated by movement of the form to separate the pivoted members to turn outwardly the side portions of the projecting margin of the upper.
5. In a machine. for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projectingbeyond the bottom of the form, form embracing'means adapted to shape the upper to the form, means for moving the form embracing means soto shape the upper and then to move the form endwise, Wipers adjacent to the bottom ofthe form arranged for separating movement, and means operated by movement of the form for eflecting separation of the wipers to turn outwardly the projecting portion of theupper.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe vuppers, the combination of'a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its'marginal portion proj ecting beyond the bottom of the form, means for crowding the upper about the form, means for moving the crowding means and the form endwise of the form, and relatively fixed means for causing the rear portion of the projecting upper to be turned outwardly as the form and crowding means are moved relatively thereto. r

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, thecombination of a form yieldingly supported for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyondthe bottom of the form, upper clamping means movable relatively to the form to wrap the upper endwise about the form and to hold it clamped thereto, means for moving the clamping means so to clamp the upper and thereafter to move the form endwise, and means for turning outwardly a portion of the upper projecting beyond the bottom of the form during movement of the form. a

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted toreceive the end portion of an upper with its margin projecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing means arranged to close and to move endwise of the form to shape the upper to the form, meansfor closing the form embracing means and moving it endwise so to shape the upper,
further movement of the form embracing means acting to move the form endwise, and means engaging the projecting margin of the upper to cause it to be turned outwardly by said endwise movement of the form.
10. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a movable form to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, means for pressing the upper into engagement with the form and for moving the form, members pivoted on a common fixed axis for causing the projecting margin of the rear portion of the upper to be turned outwardly, and means operated by movement of the form for turning said members on their axis to turn outwardly the side portions of the projecting margin of the upper.
11. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing means adapted to wipe the upper endwise over the form, means for moving the form embracing means so to wipe the upper and then to move the form endwise, flange forming wipers adjacent to the bottom of the form arranged for separating movement, and
means operated by movement of the form for effecting separation of the flange forming wipers to turn outwardly the projecting por-' tion of the upper against the form embracing means. p

In a vmachine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a movable form to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, means for pressing the upper forwardly over the form into engagement with the form and for moving the form forwardly, flanging mem bers held from movement with the form for turning outwardly the end portion of the projecting portion of the upper when theform is so moved, and means carried by the form for separating the Hanging members to turn outwardly the side portions of the projecting upper. 1

In a machine for formingoutturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged. for endwise'movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, members arranged to be closed and moved endwise of the form for crowding the upper about the form, means for moving said members and the form endwise of the form, and relatively fixed wipers for causing the rear portion of the projecting upper to be turned outwardly against said members as the form and said members are moved relatively to the wiper 14. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form yieldingly supported for endwise movement,.said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, upper clamping means movable relatively to the form to wrap the upper endwise about the form and tohold itclamped thereto, said clamping means havinga surface substantially in the plane ofthe bottom of the form, means for moving the clamping means so to clamp the upper and thereafter to move the form endwise, and wipers for turning outwardly a portion of the upper projecting beyond the bottom of the form and v pressing it against the surface of the clampin g means during movement of the form.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers. the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said i form being adapted to receive the end por-r tion of an upper with its margin projecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing members arranged for yielding movement height-wise of the form and adapt ed to shape the upper to the form, said members having surfaces against which the outturned upper may be pressed, meansfor upper and press it against thesurfaces on the form embracing members.
16. In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a movable form to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, means for pressing the upper into engagement with the form and for moving the form, members pivoted on a common fixed axis and having a pear-shaped opening between them, and a 7 pin on the form engaging said opening and acting upon movement of the form to separate said members and cause the projecting margin of the rear portion of the upper to be turned outwardly.

Ina machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion oI an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing means adapted to shape the upper to the form, means for moving the form embracing means so to shape the upper and then to move the form endwise, Wipers adjacent to the bottom of the form arranged for separating movement and having cam formations on opposed surfaces thereof, and a pin on the form extending between said cam formations to cause separation of the wipers to turn outwardly the projecting portion of the upper when the form is moved.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form, said'iorm being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyondthe bottom of the form, pivoted members constructed and arranged for closing :movement and to provide between them when closed a gap having the shape of the periphery of the form adjacent to its bottom face, means for first closing said members and then moving them bodily lengthwise of the form to wipe the upper first against the sides of the form and then to press the upper against the end of the form, and means for turning outwardly the projecting portion of the upper.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers,-the combination of a form adapted toreceive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, upper clamping means movable relatively to the form first to wipe the upper endwise about the sides of the form and then to hold it clamped against the end of the form, means for moving the clamping means so to wipe and clamp the upper, and means for turning outwardly a portion of the upper projecting beyondithe afform, said formbeing adapted to receive 7 the end portion of an upper with its margin proj ecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing means arranged first to close and thento move endwiseof the form to shapethe upper toth-e form, means forso closing the form embracing means and so moving itv endwise to shape the upper, a pair. or pivoted wipers, and means for operating the wipers to cause the projecting margin of the upperto .be turnedoutwardly.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form, said form vbeing adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, form embracing means vadapted to wipe the upper ,endwise over the form, means for moving the form embracing means so to wipe the upper, wiper plates adjacent-tothe bottom of the-form arrangedfor separating movement, and means for. jeii'ectmg separa.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, said form being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, upper clamps pivoted together and arranged to be closed toward the form and moved endwise of the form for wiping the upper endwise of I the form, means for closing and moving the upper clamps endwise of the form until they engage the end of the form and then moving the clamps and form together, flange forming wipers pivoted substantially at the end of the form when the form is in its initial position, and means for causing the free ends of the flange forming wipers to separate when the form is moved endwise to turn the mar ginal portion of the upper outwardly against the upper clamps.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arranged for endwise movement, spring means. for sustaining the form in its initial position, saidform being adapted to receive the end portion of an upper with its'marginal portion projecting beyond the bottom of the form, flange forming wipers pivoted to the form substantially at the end of the form when the form is in its initial position so that the projecting portion of the upper is supportedby the flange forming wipers, up- 7 per clamps pivoted tog-ether and arranged to I ing the clampsendwiseofthe form until they engage the end of the form and then moving the clamps and formtogether, and means operated by movement ofthe. form for causing 3 the free endsof the flange forming wipers to separate and wipe the side portions of the projecting margin against the upper clamps.

In a machine for forming outturned flanges on shoe uppers, the combination of a form arrangedfor endwise movement, said formvbeing adapted to receive the end portion of an upper. with its marginal portion pro.- j ectingbeyondthebottom of the form, spring means for sustainingthe formin its initial position, flange forming wipers pivoted substantially at the end of the form when the formis in its initial position, upper clamps pivoted together and arranged to be closed toward the form and moved endwise of the form for wiping the upper endwise of the form, means for closing and moving the upper clamps endwise of the form until they engage the end of the form and then moving the clamps and form together, and means for causing the flange forming wipers to swing outwardly when the form is moved endwise.
