Description

Oct. 4, 1932. L. H. BAUGHMAN WIRE BOUND PACKING BOX Filed April 12. 1930 L eon/dds Edda/MM INVENTOR ma/MM I ATTORNEY I parent from the following description in Patented Oct. 4, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE 'IIEONIDAS H. BAUGHMAN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO TOLEDO SCALE MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF'TOLEDO, OHIO, .A. CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY WIRE BOUND PACKING Box Application filed April 12, 1930. Serial No. 443,872.
This invention relates to improvements in reinforcing packing boxes and in particular to wooden packing boxes which are reinforced by steel wires or bands. These reinforcements serve a two-fold purpose, first, to strengthen the box or case and, secondly, to make them pilfer proof. These wires or bands are generally tightened with a ratchet wire tying machine which draws them so taut, that they cut into the corners of the box, injuring it, and when the wires are applied parallel to the grain of the wood they are apt to split the boards. It has been suggested that metal angles be placed under the wire at the corners, to prevent the wires from injuring the box; but this, it will be readily seen, permits a dishonest person to force these angles from under the wires, thus loosening them to such extent, that the wires. maybe slipped over the box, and after opening and removing the contents, again slipping the wires in place and'driving the angles under them. If this is done in a careful manner, the box will not show signs of having been opened and the theft will not be discovered until it 'arrives at its destination.
The principal ob-j ectof my invention is the provision of a metal corner angle which prevents excessive injury to the box corner.
Another object is the provision of a metal angle, in conjunction with a wire bound box which cannot be removed or displaced until the wire is removed.
Still another object is the provision of a metal corner angle which prevents the undetected pilfering, of wire bound boxes.
Other objects and advantages will be apwhich reference is had to the accompanying drawing and in which similar reference numerals designate similar the several views.
In the drawing Figure I is a perspective view of a packing box embodying the invention.
parts throughout Figure II is an enlarged perspective view of the protective angle; and
Figure III is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of its application.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the box l nay be constructed in any manner, a special construction is not required. When the wires 2 are placed around the box 1, a metallic angle 3 is placed under the wire at eachcorner. The angle 3 is preferably of steel and bent so that the legs are at an angle of degrees. If, however, the angles are to be used with boxes having a different contour than a rectangle, for example, a six sided box, the legs are bent to the corresponding angle. Before forming the angle an oblong rectangular opening l is stamped tierein.
When the wires are tightened, the pressure causes that portion projecting through the opening a to embed itself into the wood to a limited depth only; further cutting or injuring of the boards is prevented by the cheeks 5 of the angle 3.
The wire, however, prevents the removal of the angles unless the wire is firstcut or Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A corner angle for wire bound boxes having portions lying along intersecting planes and an opening extending across the line of intersection of said planes, the surfaces of said corner angle at the ends of said opening being adapted for engagement by a.
wire lying within said opening, and preventing excessive penetration of said wire into said box.
2. In a device of the type described,
combination, a box, wire means for tying said box and metallic angles adapted to be placed on the corner of said box, beneath said wires, said angles being'provided with slots and said wire lying in said slot, said co-operative combination being adapted to prevent displacement of said wire means by the penetration of said wire means into said box to a predetermined depth. 7
