Description

Sept. 27, 1932. MELYAN 1,880,145
TOP SPINNING HANDLE Filed May 23, 1932 18 1 1/9 8 Paul 1116/ an.
20 v INVENTOR H is ATTOR N EYS Patented Sept. 27, 1932 UNITED ST TOP-SPINNING: HANDLE Application filed. May 23,
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in top-spinnlng handles, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel, simple, and inexpensive top-spinning handle and to construct the same so that it can readily be accommodated to tops having spindles of various sizes.
Another object of the invention is to provide on the top-spinning handle a novel wing member or plate onto which the top may be lifted when spinning so that the handle and attached wing member may be held in the hand while the top is spinning on said plate or Wing member, thereby to aiford'a novel and amusing effect.
5 Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combina. tion and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by J reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a respective view of a preferred form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view on line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4: is a sectional View on line 44 in 7 L Fig. 3.
In the drawing 10 indicates generally my novel top-spinning handle which comprises two sections 11 and 12 that are hingedly connected together at one end of the handle by means of a resilient strap 13 or other suitable hinge connection. Disposed between the two handle sections 11 and 12 and urging the same apart is a flat spring member 14: which has one end attached as at 15 to the handle section 12.
Movement of the handle sections 11 and 12 relative to each other is limited by means generally indicated at 16 and including a strap 17 which has one end attached to the handle section 12 at 18; the other end port-ion of the strap 17 being provided with a slot 1932 Serial No. 55.51045.
19 through-Which projects a headed attached to the handle section 11.
The handle sections 11 and 12 arenormally urged apart at their free'ends'21 by the spring member l': so that thediameter of the spin die-receiving ring or opening 22 which the pin 20 handle sections cooperate to provide may be varied by pressing the handle sections toward each other"'against the action of the spring member 14 whereby to accommodate the size of thering 22 to varying. diameters of spindles such as 23 of different tops such as 24:.
The spinning cord 25 is preferably fed through a slot 26 in one of the handlesections,
and wound about the top spindle 23 in a 0011- ventional manner, but the cord 25 may be left entirely free of the handle if desired;
The'top is released from the handle 10 in a conventional manner, by exerting a quick pull on the free end of cord 25. To one of the handle sections I attach, as at 27, a flanged plate or wing 28 which projects laterally from the handle 10 and has a flared mouth 29.
After the top has been set spinning on a surface the handle 10 may be lowered down to the surface, the edge 29 of the plate 28 pressed against the surface under the rotating spindle of the top, and the spinning top guided over the flared mouth or edge 29 of the plate 28 up onto the same whereby the handle 10 and the plate 28 may be held in the hand while the top is spinning on thewing or plate 28, thereby creating a novel and amusing effect.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eflect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention 1, therefore, donot wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such Variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what therein on its inner side, and said recesses cooperating with each other toprovide in the handle a top spindle-receiving opening adapted selectively to receive one at a time top spindles of varying diameters.
2. Atop spinnin handle comprising apair of sections hinge ly connected together at one end of the handle each of said sections having a recess provided therein on its inner side, said recesses cooperating with each other to provide in the otherjend portion of the handle a top spindle-receiving opening adapted selectively to receive one at a time top spindles of varying diameters, and a spring member carried by said handle be tween said handle sections and normally urging said sections apart.
3. A top spinning handle comprising a pair of sections hingedly connected together at one end of the handle eachof said sections having a recess provided therein on its inner side, said recesses cooperating with each other to provide in the other end portion of the handle a top spindle-receiving opening adapted selectively to receive one at a time top spindles of varying diameters, a spring member carried by said handle between said handle sections and normally urging said sections apart, and means associated with said sections limiting the extent of movement of the same relative to each other by said spring member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
PAUL MELYAN.
