This invention relates to wearing apparel and suspending means therefor wherein, by an improved construction and arrangement of parts, the suspending means is concealed thus improving the appearance of the clothing.

Physicians are generally agreed that the wearing of a belt to support the trousers 1s more or less injurious to the health and the use of suspenders is much to be preferred. lowever, from the view point of personal appearance and aprpoved style, suspenders are not apt to be as acceptable as a belt. It is an object of the invention to improve the appearance of wearing apparel provided with suspenders, by concealing the suspenders in a more satisfactory and convenient manner while in nowise interferring with their function as a means for supporting the trousers.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide wearing apparel having concealed suspenders wherein the hooks with which the suspenders are necessarily furnished are combined with the shirt in a manner which will not cause injurious wear upon the shirt.

Another object of the invention is to provide the suspenders with means for connec tion with the trousers which will place less strain upon the buttons or other fastening devices placed upon the trousers, and will at the same time permit free bending and twist ting movements of the body without danger of placing an undue amount of strain upon the buttons or analogous fastening devices.

Still another object of the invention is to provide the suspenders with means for connection with the trousers which will accommodate the wearing of shirts, the texture of which varies. For example a flannel shirt can be applied between the supporting means of the trousers and the hook of the suspenders as readily as that of a silk shirt.

Other objects, advantages and features of the invention may hereinafter appear.

Referring to the accompanying drawing which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention,

Fig. 1 is an external view of a shirt, trousers and pair of suspenders, showing the same in place upon the body ofthe wearer and illustrating the principles of the invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the lower end of one of the suspenders and the attaching means carried'thereby reproduced on a larger scale than that shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the lower portion of one of the suspenders, on an enlarged scale, showing the manner of connecting the same to the trousers, the shirt being omitted.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the front portion 7. of each suspender is provided with two runs which are looped around.

a fastening clip 8 as well shown in Fig. 3, said clip being provided with an elongated slot or eye 9 through which the suspender is led. The usualfastener or buckle 10 to secure the suspender in the properly adjusted condition is shown in Fig. 1.

The clip or hook element 8 has a portion proper 12 forming an upwardly arched seat 120; wherein rests the transversely extending flexible connection 13, each end portion of said connection being provided with a 100 14: whereby it is secured to the button 15 at that end thereof. The seat 12a is sufliciently wide to permit the connection 13 to slide freely therein and this construction together with the upwardly archedcharacter of said seat provides a flexibility and adjustability which lessens the danger of the buttons 15 from being placed under excessive strain owing to the bending ortwisting movements of the body of the wearer. The seat portion 12a of the hook element 8 is broad with relation to the other parts of the clip, the breadth thereof being equalto or greater than the length of the slot 9 which, in turn, is sufiiciently long to receive the suspender 7.

In the drawing, the shirt of well known pattern is shown in place upon the body of the wearer, the portion of said shirt which is above the buttons 15 overlying the suspenders 7 and thus concealing them from view. Opposite to each clip 8 the shirt is provided with an upwardly and outwardly directed pucker, as clearly shown in Fig. 2,

which underlies the connection 13 and extends between it and the hook 12. In order to protect these puckered portions of the shirt from being worn by the end portions of the r5. hook 12, each hook has placed thereover a compressible facing 25 of sheet rubber or of relatively soft material, which is cemented or otherwise secured to the hook. Said facing extends from edge to edge of the hook and is doubled over theendportion thereof and causes a narrowing of the space enclosed by the hook at that point and thereby aids in keeping the connection 13 from being accidentally removed from the hook. The lower edge of said facing forms a shoulder which also aids in keeping the connection in place within the hook.

This compressible facing slightly narrows the throat of the hook and therefore guards against accidental displacement of the inserted connection 13.

The hook 12 is brought into underneath contact with the connection 13 simply by grasping the shirt together with the hook and slipping the connection 13 over the lip of the hook the shirt fabric resting therebetween as clearly shown in Fig. 4. i

I claim: l 1. In means suspended from suspenders for supporting trousers through the medium of a pucker placed in a shirt and engageable with a transversely extending connection having end portions fastened to the inner side of the trousers comprising a metallic hook, the end of the hook being directed outwardly and upwardly, said hookhaving a facing of material softer than its metallic portion doubled over its end portion and extending from edge to edge of the hook to protect 0 the puckered portion of the shirt, said facing narrowing the space inclosed by the hook and thereby aiding in keeping said connection in place within the hook.

In means suspendable from suspenders for invisibly supporting trousers through the medium of a pucker placed in a shirt and engageable with a transversely extending connection having end portions. fastened to the inner side of the trousers comprising a me tallic hook, the end of the hook being turned upwardly parallel to the body portion thereof, said hook having a sheet rubber facing overlying its end portion and adapted to protect the puckered portion of the shirt,

the lower edge of said facing serving as a shoulder to aid in keeping said connection-in place within the hook.
