This invention relates to typewriterdesks and is moreA especially an improvement upon the structure disclosed in PatentV 1,725,816, issued to me on August 27, 1929.
l One ofthe objects isto provide the. desk with a hinged drop-leaf to whichthe typewriter is adaptedto be connected saidleaf being equipped with a supporting leg foldable backwardly and upwardly behind the leaf when dropped.
A further object is to provide a substantial supportingle'af or shelf for a typewriter .or the like which can be quieklymoved into or out of operative position, itbeingfmounte'd both to swing and slide relative to its `housing,A there being a runnerconnected to the leaf for supporting it in its lowermost position for sliding movement.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the Vdescription proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described v and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed Ina-y be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre- SD ferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section showing the leaf extended for use.
Figure 2 is a. front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3--3, Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertically longitudinal section showin the leaf lowered and housed, said leaf an its slide being shown in elevation.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5, Figure 4. Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a suitably constructed housing which can constitute a pedestal of a desk or can comprise a desk complete in itself.
A laterally swinging door 2 serves to close the front of the housing and carries a block 3 on its inner surface provided with a latch 4` for the purpose hereinafter stated.
Spaced superposed guide strips 5 and 6 are arranged in pairs on the inner surfaces of the sidesof the housing adjacent to the top thereof and guide rails 7 are attached to the lower strips 5 and partly lap the slots 8 between the strips.
A slide- 9 is interposed between rails 7 and 55 has angle plates 10 secured to the sides thereof. These plates-bear down on the rails 7 and extend back of them between strips 5 and 6. Thusl theel-idel isl held assembled with the housingbutcan be moved freely toward or 60 from the doorv2..
f Extending under and hinged tothe back edge of slide 9 as indicated at 11 is a leaf or shelf 12 having sockets -13 for the reception of dowels 14. These dowels extend'downwardly 65 fronrthefront portion of the slide and are adapted-to .be Vreceived by the sockets 18 when theleaf or shelf is elevated7 thereby relie-ving the hinges l1 'from side strains.
Transverse guide cleats 15 are secured on 'I0 the leaf andlocated between them is a slidable board16 to which a typewriter or the like can be fastened. The board is held against displacement by retaining strips 17 secured on cleats V15and lapping the board.
'Abroadstrip 18 is secured within the 'bottonizportion fof the housing 1 and extends baekwardly-fromthe bottom .of the door opening. Thisstripconstitutes a rail and is providednear its frontendwith a notch'19.' The 30 back endf of the stripextends between vertically disposed blocks 20 the front edges 21 of; f'whichuare.. curved rearwardly and upwardly.
, Secured tothe bottom of shelf or leaf 12 g5 is arunner 22'which' may be in the form of aA-ftria-ngular blockcentrallyv located, on the shelf or'leaf This block'is so proportioned that when the shelf or leaf 12 is swung downwardly the bottomedge of the blockwill rest Hat onstripn18. The forked .end of' 'a leg 23straddles the blck and is pivoted thereto as .shown tt-*211. The other end vofthe leg has-a projectingqtongue 25.
When it is desired to use the leaf or shelf 12 the door-2 is .swung open and the Vleaf will be found inthe housing in an inclined position with runner 22 bearing on-stripl18 and the leg 23 extended upwardly back of the inclined leaf.; A handle 26 on the leaf is then 1.00
used for pulling the leaf upwardly and outwardly beside the open door 2 and at the same time the slide 9 will move forwardly. The back end of leg 23 will drag along blocks 2O and strip 18 until tongue 25 arrives over recess 19 whereupon it will drop into the recess and hold the leaf 12 in operative position. Door 2 can then be swung against the side of the leaf 12 to bring block 3 thereunder and allow the spring catch to snap into engagement with the bottom surface of the leaf.
The structure is now ready for use and the board 16 can be slid toany position necessary to properly place the supported machine. When the structure is to be closed, the leaf 12 is pulled upwardly slightly to withdraw tongue 25 from notch 19 and disengage the leaf from latch 4. 'The door is swung laterally to remove the block 8 from under the leaf and the leg 28 is pressed backwardly with the foot. Thereafter the leaf 12 is lowered and pushed backwardly. The leg 23 will slide along strip 18 and thence upwardly along the edges 2 of blocks 20.
rlhe runner 22 will slide along strip 18 and when the parts are brought to theirinnermost positions the door can be closed.
For the purpose of reducing friction roller bearings 27 can be placed on the runner 22 and on the strip 18. Wear strips 28 of metal can also be attached to the sides of the guide strips 6 for lapping the sliding member thereunder, thereby reducing friction.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. The combination with a housing having a door opening, of a slide therein, means for guiding the slide for movement toward and from the opening, a drop leaf hingedly connected to the slide and movable therewith,
a runner carried by the leaf, a leg pivotally connected to the runner, a rail in the housing for sliding engagement by the leg and runner, and cooperating means on the leg and rail for holding the leg in position to support the leaf and runner in elevated positions. 2. The combination with a housing having a door opening, of a slide therein, meansfor guiding the slide for movement toward and from the opening, a drop leaf hingedly connected to the slide and movabletherewith, a runner carried by the leaf, a leg pivotally connected to the runner, a rail in the housing for sliding engagement by the leg and run'- ner, and means extending from the rail for elevating one end of the leg during the sliding movement of the runner in one direction. 8. The combination with a housing having a door opening, of a slide therein, means for supporting the slide for movement toward and from the opening, a drop leaf hingedly connected tothe slide and movable therewith, a runner carried by the Ylea-f, a leg pivotally Aconnected to the runner, a rail in the housing for sliding engagement by the leg and runner, and means extending from the rail for elevating one end of the leg during the sliding movement of the runner in one direction, and cooperating means on the leg and rail for holding the leg in position to support the leaf and runner in elevated positions.,
4. The combination with a housing having a door opening, of a slide therein, means for guiding theslide for` movement toward and from the opening, a drop leaf, means for connecting the leaf to the slide for downward movement about an axis extending transversely of the opening, a runner carried by the leaf, a railin the housing for engagement by the runner when the leaf is lowered and means cooperating with the rail and run-l ner for holding the leaf in raised position. y
5. The combination with a housing, of a drop leaf, a support therefor slidably mounted in the housing, a runneriixed to the leaf, a leg hingedly connected at one end tothe runner and free at its other end, and means cooperating with the leg for supporting the drop leaf and runner in elevated position when slid to one limit of its movement.
In testimon that I claim the foregoing as my own, have heretoaffixed my signature.
' ROBERT M. MILLER.
