My invention relates to automatic storm sash operators of the type which connect a sliding sash to a swinging storm sash m=ounted in the same window trame, whereby the y opening and closing movements ot the sliding sash will impart like movements to the storm sash, thus .avoiding the effort and inconvenience of opening and closing the storm sash, independent of the sliding sash.
The object of the invention is to provide a storm ysash operator that is of simple con struction, easy to yattach to the respective sashes, positive in its action, will not rattle during relative movement of the sas'hes, and that may be readily separated without the use of tools to permit the removal of the storm sash from the window trame.
Generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations ot devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

The numeral 8 indicates the :frame of a double hung window, yand the upper and lower sliding' sashes thereof .are indicated the numerals 9 and 10, respectively. The storm sash 11 is mounted in the window traine 8 and attached thereto at its top by suitable hinges 1'2 `for outward swinging movement.
Two of the automatic operators are employed 'for the swinging sash11, one at each side thereof., and only one of which is shown. Each storm sash operator comprises a link 13, an anchor plate 14 andan actuator 15.
The anchor plate 14 is secured to one of the stiles ot the storm sash 11 by a. pair of Wood screwsfand has at itsvertical center a horizontally .disposed sleeve-like bearing 16. A trunnion 17, tormedby bending the upper end portion of the link laterally, is turnably mounted in the bearing 16. The trunnion is held against removal from the bearing 16 by a guard-flange 18 formed with the anchor plate 14 and having a notch-like passageway 19 aligned with said bearing tor the removal of .the .tr-unnion 17 therefrom when the link Y13 is in a pre-determined relation thereto, to-wit.: perpendicular to the anchor plate 14.
. As showmthe actuator 15 comprises a base 20,.a body member 21 having a cam slot 22 and -cam'ange or shoulder 23, and a guard flange 24 formed from a single sheet of metal. Thebase 20 is secured t-o one of the stiles of the lower sliding sash l1 by a pair of wood screws, and the body 21 is `perpendicular t said base and jin the plane ot said sash. It will be noted that the cam slot 22 is upwardly and outwardly inclined `from the base 20, and the `cam llange 23 overlies the cam slot 22 and is downwardly and inwardly inclined from .said base, or in other words it is reversely inclined from the cam slot 22. The guard flange 24 is perpendicular to the base 2O and laterally spaced from the body 21, on the mme side thereof as the cam flange 23. 1 The link 13, at its lower end portion, is folded upon itself to form a cam finger 26 and between said link and cam finger a short pivot 25 which extends through the slot 22 for compound pivotal and sliding movements therein. This cam tinger 26 and the link 13, which are on the opposite sides of the body 21, hold the pivot 25 in the cam lslot 22.
The purpose of the guard 24 is to prevent the pivot 25 from being forced laterally out of the slot 22 by the bending of the link 13 during pushing strains on said link by the actuator 15 to open the swinging sash 11.
A coil spring 27 encircling the link 13 has its upper end anchored to said link, and its other end attached by a straightv end section 28 of said spring to the actuator 21 at a point below the cam slot 22. The spring section 28 is connected to the actuator 21 by a separable connection 29. f This spring 27 when the sashes 10 and 11 are open, yieldingly holds the pivot 26 seated against the actuator` at the lower end of the cam slot 22 and prevents rattle in the connection between the link 13-and actuator 21 when the sashes'are open.
When the sashes 10 and 11 are closed, the pivot 26 is at a point intermediate of the ends of the cam slot 22, and the spring 27 is held under tension. This position ot the pivot 26 in the cam slot 22 permits a limited opening and closing movement of the lower sash 10 when the swinging sash l1 is closed.
During the opening movement of the lower sash 10, the actuator 22 engages thepivot 26, and acting through the link 13 swings the storm sash 11 open. The spring 27, when the sashes 10 and 11 are open, prevents movement of the swinging sash 11 under the action of the wind. l
During the closing movement of the sliding sash 10, the tension of the spring 27 is such as to hold the link 13 with its pivot 26 at the lower end of the cam slot 22, and thereby direct the cam finger 25 under the cam flange 23. At the time the swinging sash 11 reaches its closing movement, further closing movement of the sliding sash 10 will bring the cam flange 23 into engagement with the upper end of the cam linger 25 and thereby move said cam finger towardthe sliding sash 11 about the axis of the pivot 26 which is held in the slot 22. This movement of the cam finger 25 bows the link 13 and places the same under strain to tightly draw the swinging sash 11 against the window stops and thereby securely hold the same closed.
The sash operator may be readily separated from the sliding sash 10 by bringing the cam finger 25 intov registration with the cam slot 22 and then moving the same laterally therethroughafter the spring'se'ction 28 has been detached from the actuator 21.
To remove the link 13 from the anchor plate 14, it is only necessary to bring said link into a perpendicular position in respect to said plate and then move the same laterally to withdrawv the trunnion 17 from the bearing 16and through the passageway 19.
From the above description it 'is evident that the actuator 21 is double-acting in that its action on the link`31,not`only imparts opening and closing movements to the swinging sash during like movements of the sliding sash but it locks the swinging sash closed during the iinal closing movement of the sliding sash.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a link having at each end a member applicable, the one to a swinging sash and the other to a sliding sash, said link having a slip joint that isoblique to the plane of the sliding sash and arranged to permit limited opening and closing movements of the sliding sash when the swinging sash is closed, said device having a part arranged to engage the link by lateral pressure during the inal closing movement of the sliding sash and place the link under stra-in lto hold the swinging sash closed.
2. The structure defined in claim 1, which further includes spring means under strain to hold the link at its slip joint in one eX- treme position.
3. A device of the class described comprising an anchor member applicable to a swinging sash, a link hingedly connected to said member, an actuating member applicable to a sliding sash, said link having a slip connection with the actuating member that is oblique to the plane of the sliding sash to permit limited opening and closing movements of the sliding sash when the swinging sash is closed, and a cam on the actuating member oblique to the plane of the sliding link and arranged to engage the link during the final closing movement of the sliding sash and place the same under strain to hold the swinging sash closed.
4., A device of the class described comprising an anchor member applicable to a swinging sash, a link, one end of which is hingedly connected to said member, an actuating member applicable to a sliding sash and having a slot oblique to the plane of the sliding sash and in which the other end of the link is mounted for compound pivotal and sliding movements, said slot being arranged to permit limited opening and closing movements of the sliding sash when the swinging sash is closed, and a cam on the actuating member, said link having a part arranged to be engaged by the cam during the inal closing movement of the sliding sash to hold the swinging sash closed.
5. A device of the class described comprising an anchor member applicable to a swinging sash,a link, one end of which is hingedly connected to the anchor member, an actuating member applicable to a sliding sash and having a cam slot oblique to the plane of the sliding sash and in which the link is mounted for compound pivotal and sliding movementsn said slot being arranged to permit limited opening and closing movements of the sliding sash when the swinging sash is closed, and a cam shoulder on the actuating member. said cam slot and cam shoulder being reversely inclined and oblique to the plane bil ila

A device of the class described comprising an anchor member applicable to a swinging sash, a link, one end of Which is hingedly connected to the anchor member, an actuating member applicable to a sliding sash and having a cam slot oblique to the plane of the sliding sash and a cam shoulder that are reversely inclined and oblique to the plane of the sliding sash, the other end portion of the link being folded upon itself to form a pivot and a lock Enger, said pivot being mounted in the cam slot for compound pivotal and sliding movements, said slot being arranged to permit limited opening and closing movements of the sliding sash when the swinging sash is closed, said cam finger being arranged to be engaged by the cam shoulder during the inal closing movements of the sliding sash and moved laterally thereby and place the link under strain to hold the swinging sash closed.
7. The structure defined vin claim 6 Which further includes a spring operative on the link to move its pivot in the cam slot in the direction of the closing movement of the swinging sash.
8. The structure delined in claim 6 Which further includes a guard on the actuating member arranged to engage the cam iinger and hold the pivot in the cam slot during opening and closing movements of the swinging sash.
