Description

N. WATERBTJRY.
w BUTTER-BOX. No.187,945. Patented Feb. 27, 1877.
NJEERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEB. WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT Eten..
NATHANIEL WATERBURY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,945, dated February 27, 1877; application liled January 25, 187.7.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Beit known that I, N. WATERBUEY, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, Which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains -to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved butter or other packing box; Fig. 2, a vertical section through the dotted line a' a: of Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a similar View, showing each ring or band of the box with its contents 'inclosed by a separate cloth or bandage.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
The nature of this invention Will be readily understood from the claims.
In the annexed' drawing, A A A refer to a number of rings or bands placed one upon the other, and constituting the box, each of which may be of a quarter orhalf. pound capacit-y; and these rings or bands may be all under one cloth or other suitable bandage, B, which may also cover their heads C G, as
. seen in Figs. l and 2.
ItWill be observed that in Fig. 3 each ring or band A is inclosed separately, as is also its contents. The object of thus constructing the box from rings or bauds of suitable capacities is to enable its contents, especially when packed with butter, to be unpacked in quantities suitable for retailing-4'. e., in quan- .tities of a quarter or half pound, pound, and
or bands A A are beveled upon their exterior circumferences, as at a a, to designate their 4points of separation through the cloth or bandage.
To unpack the box in serving a customer or purchaser, the cloth is severed, where a single bandage is used, at the designated point, and the ring, With the desired quantity of butter, separated or severed from the con tents of the adjoining ring or band, after which the upper head is removed, (or it may be removed before severing the bandage,) when the severed ring or band, with its contents, `:vill be ready, at'ter properly wrapping the same, vto be passed to the customer or purchaser.
The rings covered or bandaged, as shown in Fig. 3, can be separated or removed without having to sever the bandage, as in the above or first instance, Without having to Wrap the severed ring, since the bandage or cloth entirely incloses its contents. The rings or bands, when thus packed or bandaged, can be removed or unpacked with their contents, and placed on the counter or other exposed position.
In putting up butter in this Way the dealer is afforded an opportunity to print the butter, or give it any impression he may desire, as each order is lled, to identify it with his store or stand.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A packing-box consisting of .connected sections of the same diameter, designedly made easily separable by force applied eXteriorly to their connections, and of heads eutirely covering and including the sections between them, and ot' suitable means for holding all the heads and sections together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of bands A A, easilyseverable connections B B B between sections, and between sections and heads, the inclosing slitted heads U C, and Wires or cords D D, as and for the purpose setV forth.
3. A packing-box consisting of two or more separate bands, A A, of the same or different width, each being separately surrounded and In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
NATH ANI EL WATERBURY.
