RAYMOND G. MOORE'OF BRIDGEIE'ORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BASSICK COM- IPANY, 0F BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, VA CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT ANTIRATTLE DoVETAiI. non DooRs Application led January 14,1931. Serial No. 508,574.
The present invention relates to anti-rattle dovetails, particularly for automobile doors,
1 an objectbeing to provide a device of this character which will prevent the rattle usuall'y resulting from the vibration and wearing of the doors, eifectually retaining the saine against vertical movement and wear, and which will at the Sametime r-etain the door in apredetermined position against movement in a line parallel to the plane of the door, thusl preventing any rattle that may re' sult from movement and wear in this direction. t isparticularly proposed, in theVV exemplary embodiment illustrated, to provide a device in which a socket'member is provided with self adjustable resiliently supported `dovetail members-adapted to have a wedge member engaged between them, the respective -dovetail members being supported against vertical movement, and in which there is aV diagonal interlocking engagement between the dovetail members and the wedge member forcing and retaining the latter in a fixed position in a horizontal linetransversely of the lateral adjustment of said dovetail members.
With the above and Votherobjects in view embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawing, and these embod-V iments will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the inven-A tion will .be finally pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the dovetailv socket member, accordingy tothe present einbodiment of my invention, .and showing the same attached to the door frame. i
F ig. 2 is a rear elevation of the Wedge meinber, in its relation for .engagement with the socket member as shown in Fig. 1 and showing thek position of thevertical edge of the door in dot-and-dash lines.v v
Fig. 3` is aninner end elevation of the wedge member showing it attached to the door. Y i Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof.`
Fig. 5 is a forward side elevation of the socket'member. Fig. 6 is a front elevationV of the socket member with the wedge member engaged therein. n
Fig. 7 isa vertical Ysectional view taken Wedge being iny elevation.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional View takenalong the line 7-7 of Fig. 6,r the block and along the line 8 8 of Fig.V
Fig. 9 isja perspectiveviewof the .twov wedge blocks employed rand showing' them slightlyseparated.Y Y 1 Y l 'p Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several fig.-Y ures of the drawing. y ff Referring to the drawing, thedevice, according tothe present embodiment ofthe invention, vcomprises a` socket member adaptedl to besecuredjto 'the door frame 10 withina suitable cut-out recess, and a'wedge member adapted to be secured to the edge of the door Y 11 Yin relation lto enter the socket membery imV upon closing of the door.
Thecasing of the socket member .comprises y.an outer part consisting of a face plate member 12 preferably formed of she-et metal, hav ing a flange 13atitsforward edge bent inwardly at a slightly obtuse angle, anda lip 14 bent forwardly from the flange '13; A rearwardly convergingopeninglis provided in the face plateand extends across the flange 13 to the lip 14, the forward portion of the openposed in parallel relation. An inwardly bent ing having its upper and lower edgesk dis- Y rim flange, 16 is formed atjthe upper and Y lower edges ofthe faceplate, land counter? sunk screw holes 17 are lprovidednear the up; per and lower edges of the plate member and the flange 14. i
The inner or boX part of the 4casing vis formed fromsheet metal and comprises a rectangular'portion 18 having upper and lower wall flanges 19 bent from the upper andlower edges,- anda rear wallflange 20 bent from the rear edge. Attaching ears v21 are bentoutwardly from the'wall riianges 19 andare adapted to be secured to the inner side of the face plate 12, preferably by spot welding as at 22. The forward edges ofthe wall flanges 19 are cut, as at-23, Fig. 8, to correspond to the angle of the flange 13 and the forward edge of the portion aq gitudinally, which permits firm engagement each other.
extends intol the opening 15 and abuts the edge of the flange 14, so that said portion 18 and the flange 14 are in flush relation to each other. o v
A pair of inwardly bent lugs arev struck from the rear wall flange 2O of the casing vfor supporting the ends of the springs, presently to be more fully referred to. i
' A pair of opposed'blockmembersfl 'and posed within thevcasing, the block 26 having a flat surface 28 at its underside adjacentits* inner end .transversely inclined downward- K ly toward the portion 18 of the'casing, while the block 2( has a flat surface 29 atits upper side adjacent its inner end which is parallel to and slidably engages the surface 28, thus cooperating with the upper and lower parallel walls of the vcasing to prevent vertical displacement of the blocks while permitting them to slide" longitudinally, relatively to Inclined faces 30 and 3 1 extend fromtheiiat surfaces 28 and 29 to the forward ends "of the blocks in diverging relation, and are transversely inclinedl downwardly in parallel relation towardthe portion 18 of the casing, thus providing a diverging-and transversely inclined recess between the blocks. Thefaces 30 and 31 fare slightly arcuate .lon-
ofthe wedge member irrespective of slight variations inl thevertical alignment of the door. Pockets 32 .are provided inthe rear walls'of the blocks within which are engaged coill springs 33 positioned upon the lugs 25 of the casing, and which 'pressjthe blocks forwardlv against the flange 13, as shown in Fig.
1, while permitting them to be forced'later-V ally inward, as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and-'8.
The blocks may be of any suitable material, and because ofv the protection against breakage afforded by Vt-hecasing, maybe of fibre',
bal'relite, or other suitable 'squeak preventing self-lubricating material. j
The wedge member comprises Aan attaching vbase 34 having counter" sunk screw holes 35, and' a rigid-wedgeprojection36 having its converging surfaces 37 and'38 inclined from the neck-portion 39" at thebase'in parallel relation toeachy other and in substantial correspondence to the transverse inclination ofV the recess between the bloclrs 26V and1 27. The
The door Yisprovided with the usual latch now shown, which "engages behind a striker on the door frame, andthe present device is suchffthatit permits the door to close sul-V ciently to allow the latch to 'operate,'and thereupon exerts an outward pressure on the door to force the latchybolt tightly against the striker. 1 Upon release of thelatch the device exerts an opening'pressure on the door.
Shouldthe wedge member be out of alignmentV with the socket,`dueto ,sagging of the door or inaccuratemounting of the `wedge member, the independent movement of the respective blockswill-permit them to adjust themselves to thewedge surfaces' and perform their cooperative retaining'function.
- While It have shown the socket member on the door frame andthe wedge member on held in a iiXed predetermined position, both f tion, but it will be obviousthat changes may be 'made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined-iny the appended claims. Having thus described. my invention what I: claim and desire to-secure by Letters Patent is Y.
