This invention relates to improvements in machines used for printing numerical amounts and particularly to machines of the kind known as check-writing or checkprinting machines, by which the amounts are filled in'on bank checks, vouchers, etc.
The object of the invention is to provide that, by the simple manipulation of a single control lever, the capacity of a machine of the hand wheel type may be substantially increased; said control lever being so placed that the operator may operate the same, in the course of setting a value in the type drums, without removing his hands from the set-up wheels.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as set forth in the appended claims.

Fig. 4 is a detail view of the type wheel locating means.
The illustrated machine is adapted to fill in the amount of a check, voucher, or other form, not only by figures, but also by words. Accordingly, it is normally provided with four type carriers, 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the form of drums or wheels, the wheel 1 bearing type expressive of the whole numbers, up to ninety-nine, in words; the wheel 2 having corresponding numbers in figures; the wheel 3 bearing the word Dollars and various fractions of a dollar from 00/100 to 99/100, in figures, and the wheel 4 having the corresponding amounts in figures expressed decimally. Thus, for example, the machine is arranged to print a check in the following form: 1
Ninety-one and 31/100 Dollars $91.31.
It is, accordingly, necessary that the wheels 1 and 2 be rotated always in unison in setting themachine for any required amount, while the wheels 3 and 4 must also be rotated in unison but independently of the wheels 1 and 2. The movements of the wheels 1 and 2 are controlled-by a manually rotatable member 5, fixed on the left-hand end of the shaft 6, the position of the wheels being indicated by a graduated index wheel 7', which turns with the main shaft 6 and'which is viewed through a member 8 fixed to the casing and formed with a sight-opening. Thewheels land 2 and the gear 9 are'keyed directly to the shaft 6' so as to turn therewith, gear 9' having' teeth engaging with a ratchet memher '50 (-Fig. 4) thereby locating the type wheels land 2 in exact printing position The wheels 3. and 4 are loosely mounted on the shaft ,6 and are adapted to be rotated in unison by the manually rotatable member 1-0, mounted on the extended hub- 20 of. gear member 11, said gear member being loosely mounted on shaft 6 and having engagement with a pinion l2 fixed on-acounter shaft 13 journaled in the casing of the machine by eccentric bearings 14' and 15. This counter shaft carries the pinions 1'6 and17,the pinion 16 meshing with theannular series of gear teeth 18 on the type wheel 4 while the pinion 17 meshes with the series of teeth 19 providedon the type wheel 3'. A ratchet, #815 similar to that having engagement with the teethof gear 9, is also provided to engage the teeth 18 on thetype wheel 4 to locate thetype wheels 3 and 4 accurately. The position of the. wheels is indicated by the graduated in? dex wheel 21 fast .upon the extended hub 22 of the type wheel 4 and viewed through the sight opening of member 8 fixed to the casmg. Q
To the four. type wheels above described have been added the type wheels 23 and 24, the type wheel 23 printing in the position shown in Fig. 1 a row of stars and bearing also type for printing the words One hundred, Two hundred, etc, to Nine hundred, each value being preceded by a star, as indicated. The type wheel 24 bears a EB type in corresponding position to the stars on type wheel 23, and a $1, $2, etc., in cor responding position to the values on type wheel 23. 1
Type wheels 23 and 24 are loosely mounted on the shaft 6, and are adapted to be rotated in unison bymeans of the control lever 35, in the folowiilgmanner; 'f y For all values less'th'an one hundred dol lars, the stars on type wheel 23 and the on type wheel 24 are in printing'position'; for
all amounts between ninetynine'dollars and one thousand dollars, the operator, in setting the values on the type- wheels 1,2, 3, and 4, by means of the set-up wheels 5 and 10, rotates the lever '35, without removing his hands from the set-up wheels, by'means of the thumb piece 36, to the desired amount as indicated by the index strip 37 on lever 35 as read through the sight opening in member 8. i
One end of lever 35 terminates in a gear segment 38 (Fig. 2) and meshes with a gear member 39 fast to a shaft 28 journaled in the casing of the machine at 29 and 30. Supported on the shaft 28 are the pinions 31and 32, the pinion 31 meshing with} the annular series of teeth 49 on the type wheel 23, and the pinion 32 meshing with-the similar series of teeth 41 provided on the type wheel 24.
Rotation of the operating lever 35 will, therefore, through its gear segment 38' and the gear 39, rotate the shaft 28, and the pinions 31 and 32- will rotate the respective type drums 23. and 24 to the desired position. 7 A ratchet, similar to the ratchet having engagement-with gear 9, is also provided to engage the teeth 49 on the type wheel 23 to locate the type wheels 23 and 24 accurately.
Apin 42, in gear 39, is provided to limit the movementof lever 35' by contacting with the surfaces 43 and 44 (Fig. 3) ofa collar or sleeve 45 adjustably mounted upon the bearing'29 by means of the set screws 46. r
I claim: y
1. In a check-writer or the'like, having a plurality of type carriers and means including an automatically located hand wheel adapted to be grasped in the hollow of: the hand and operable to set one of said type carriers selectively to bring difierent type to printing position; selective setting devices for another of said type carriers, including a thumb lever located adjacent said hand wheel, and within reach of the thumb of the hand upon said wheel.
2. In a check-writer orthe like, having seres of type carriers and means including an automatically located hand wheel adapted to be grasped in the hollow of the hand and operable to set a type carrier of each series selectively to bring different type to printing position; selective setting devices for other of said typecarriers, including a thumb lever located adjacent said hand Wheel and within reach of the thumb of the hand upon said wheel, and operating connections between said lever and a type carrier of each series.
