vLike numerals refer to like partsthroughout the several figures. Referring,now. tothe drawing z;
v I have shown a flush valve having a. casing v 1 with a removable end vpiece 2. This casing is provided with an` admission opening 3- and a dischargeopening 4. The admission opening is connected with the source of water supply and the discharge opening leads to the point of use of the water. y Ajvalve seat 4a is locatcdin the casing. A valve member z5 co-operates with this valve seat and controls the flow of water through the casing. A pislton 6 is connected with the valve member 5 and divides the casing into twol chambers'?.
and 8. The valve is controlled bv varying the 7 relative pressure in the chambers 7 and 8.
IVater passes from` the chamber 7 to the chamber 8 toequalize the pressure in the two chambers through a bv pass or passageway lending from the chamber rto the' chamber Q Tn :the construction shown ,this passageway has a laterally extending portion 9 and a] vation of the valve.

portion 10 atan :angle thereto..v The portionv l i927.l serial Masami. v
l has anlenlarged section 11containing al i control member 12 and being provided witha contracted. outlet j 13.l The control member 12 isarr'anged `with la portion 14 which projects into the outlet 13 and beyond the face 55 of the vpiston 6 when the control'member is in its closed position. The control member has aclosingface 15 which engages aiseat 16 so as ,to` shut off the main flow ofwater through fthe by pass. Means is provided forI 50, permitting asmall iiow ofkwater bfrom cham," ber 7 into chamber 8 lwhen the controlling member is closed. i
In the construction shown", this means consists of one or more `channels or' gr0ovesf17 65 on the closing face 15 of the control member. The control member 12 vis normally held against its seat by a spring, or the 1ike,12a

Means is provided forpermitting Water to escape fromthe chamber 8 to secure the op'er- .75
l A suitably controlled i escape passageway may provided forthis `In the particular construction illustrated, this escape passagewayl is provided withan g()` enlarged portion `18 with a plurality of branches 19 leading therefrom through" the piston 6 to they chamber Sand an escape opening 20 leading tothe discharge opening 4. An'escape valve 21 is located in the enlarged 85 .portion 1 8 and normally rests yupon a' seat V22 so as to close the escape passageway;
Some means is'provided for operating the escape valve. In the construction shown, this `valve is operated by meansof a handle 23 9o which 'is operatively connected escape valve in any suitable'way.
In the vparticular v4construction shown, the escape valve is provided with a projectin' portion 24. A control1in`g'part125 is arrang 95 toengage the projectin'gportion 24, when the handle 23 is moved s o as to move the escape valve 21 to open the escape passageway. The controlling part 25 is slidably mounted1 inl a removable' piece 26and has an enlarged end 10Q with the 27 which engages the end 28 of the handle, and is normally held in its inoperative position by the spring 29. When the handle 23 is Amoved in any direction, the controlling piece 25 is thrust forward so as to engage the projecting'part124 and move the escape valve 21 to'open the escape passageway. Illien the handle Ais releasedythe spring 29 inovesthe handle and the controlling rpiece 25 to their initial positions. The escape-valve 21 will return to its initial position. If desired, however, a closingrv device such as the spring 30 mayy be provided.y In order to facilitate the assembling of the parts, the valve member 5 is made separatefrom the piston, the piston being provided with a projecting part in which the enlarged .portionV` 18ct the. escape passageway is formed and intov which the escape valve 21is received.
The valve member 5 i connection as shown in Fig. 1; order to provide easy means for inserting the controlling member 12 in position, the piston GV is provided with a removable portion 6a and the packingpiece 6b, for the piston, is:
- adjusting device 31 connected with the casing which is shown asan adjusting screw. This adjusting device is arranged to bev projected moreor less beyond the ace32 of the casing and'is provided with a notch 33 oran adjustj ing tool to vfacilitate its adjustment. This chamber 8 and'permit a greater flow of Watery adjustingdevice engages the top of the piston 6 .and limits its 'upwardmovement It will be seen that as the portion of the adjusting device which projects beyond the face of the casing, is lengthened, the vdistance through which the piston moves will beshortened. This reduces the amount of water discharged fromthe valve in two ways, namely, by reducing the opening .producedv by thevalve member 5 and by shortening tlieltinie the` valve member 5 is open.
move the control member to engagethe passageway leading fromV they chamber 7 to the so as to insure against obstruction of the passageway. The adjusting device 31 is provided with a gro-ove 34 at its lower end so that it does not interfere With the How of the s attached to the hol'-V .low projection on the piston, by a threaded It will be seen that bymea'nsof this device, 'y A. anydesiredfadjustment vmay `be iseei'ired.` In a the construction illustrated, the adjusting dej vice 31 is located so that it will engage the y portion' 14 of the control member 12 'so as to -move the adjusting device. In order to move the adjustingr device, theplug must be removed.
.In Fig. `3, I have shown a modied construction where the vcontrol member l2?) is hollow and isyheld against its seat by the flow ofthe water in chamber 7.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a further modilication where the control member 12al is a float, that is, a device which, when the water enters the chamber inl which it is located, will, by itsbuoyancy be moved to Vits closed position. f
Fig. 5 is affnrthermodilicationshowing the control member 12J as a hollow receptacle acting as afloat which is, by its buoyancy movedto its closed position confining the flow of the water'to the by-passld.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows When the valve is in use, the partis, when the valve is not'being operated, are as shown in Fig.-1. When it is desired to operate the valve, the handle 23 is-rinoved. This moves the controlling piece 25 andthe projecting part 24 and the escape valve 2l. VAWater is novi1 permitted to escape from the chamber 8 through the escape passageway'l, 19 and 20 through the open escapey valve 21. This releases the pressure in the chamber 8 and the pressure of the water in chamber A7l moves the piston 6 so as to move the'valve member 5 from its seatzand permit Water to pass from the source of supply through the discharge 4 to the point of use.` k; 'j
When the piston moves up yto its upward limit, the adjusting device 31 engages the end 14 of the control member '12 and movesv said control member to` its open position, that is, so as to separate the faces 15 and 16. When the handle 23 is relieved, the escape valve 21 returns to its closed position so as to cut o` the escape of the water from the chamber 8. Water now j passes from chamber 9 up through thefby pass and 'past the control member 12 into the chamber 8 equalizing the pressure in the two chambers and causing the piston V6 tok be movedbaek-to its initial posi-- `Whenthe piston moves suiciently to disl engage the adjusting device 31 from the end i es be'noted that when the valve is operated and the piston moved to its upward limit, the control member 12 in the by pass, is moved sof *that the seating parts are separated' and an enlarged opening provided through which lVhenit is desiredlo reduce the amount of' water discharged from the flush valve, at
l each operation, the adj ustiiig device 3l is adj usted to project farther beyond theA face 32 of the casing. opening of the valve'member and shortens the length of time it is open thus'reduciiig 910 the quantity of water discharged. v/Vhen itv is desired to increase the amount of water discharged at each operation of the iiuslivalve,
the adjusting device 31 is movedso as to de` crease the length projecting beyond the face Z5' 32. This increases the maximum opening of the valve member 5 and also increases the time during which the valve member 5 is open, thus increasing the amount of water discharged by the valve at each operation.
It will further be noted that the by pass is in tliefmoving piston and is at the center of the iiow of water so that it is in the swift current of water flowing through the valve and the discharge of any foreign matter from the "5 by-pass is assured. The by-pass may be secured by flattening one of the associated parts *softhat there will be a space between the two parts to permit the flow of the desired amount of water. i
