Sept 6, 1932.
W. A. KRAMER COMBINED GARBAGE COOKER AND DRIER Filed June 16. 1950 [N VENTOR Patented Sept. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES WILBUR A. KRAMER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE" ADVANCE FOUNDRY PANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO 7 com- COMBINED GARBAGE COOKER. AND DRIER.
Application filed June 16,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination garbage cookers and dryers.
It is one of the principal objects of my invention to provide an economical and durable steam-jacketed pressure vessel such as a garbage cooker and dryer.
Another object of my invention is to provide for the cooker, a bottom member which, being one casting, will present no seams and holes for abrasive action due to the agitation of the garbage.
It is another object of my invention to pro- Vide a multiplicity of steam passages connected together by manifold means to remove the hazard of a single high pressure steam compartment.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view taken through my pressure vessel. Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken through the bottom portion of the same, showing the agitator. Figure 3 is a top view of the vessel. And Figure 4 is a sectional view taken through the steam jacket on the line 44 of Figure 2, showing how the bracing ties and ribs are constructed and arranged to permit the circulation of steam.
Referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating my invention, the numeral 1 designates a pressure vessel made up of a bottom casting 2, an intermediate casting 3, a top casting 4, a cover plate 5, a filler neck 5 and a charging door 6.
Formed on the bottom portion of the casting 2 are flanged feet 7 which rests upon posts 8 for support above a motor 9. Through a worm drive (not shown) in a casing 10 supported by feet 11, the motor 9 rotates a vertical shaft 12 that projects through a hole 13 in the bottom of the casting 2. Attached to the shaft 12 within the casting 2 is a horizontal propeller or agitator 14.
Fitted in the hole 13 in the bottom of the casting 2 is a bearing 15 for the shaft 12. This bearing has a bottom flange 16 that is secured by bolts 17 to the casting. Surrounding the shaft 12 within the enlarged lower portion of the bearing is a packing 18 that section 3.
portion of the latter section studs 34 are in- 1930. serial No. 461,295.
The bottom section 2 of the vessel 1 has a PATENT OFFICE.
double side wall .to provide communicating steam spaces 23 between bracing ties 24. These spaces are divided by ribs 25 containing apertures 26 through which the steam circulates. To the communicating spaces 23 in the casting 2 steam is admitted from a radial connection 26 on the manifold 22.
The intermediate section 3 of the vessel 1 is also provided with a double wall to form communicating steam spaces 27 between bracingties 28. These spaces are divided by ribs i 29 containing apertures 30 for the circulation of the steam. To these spaces 27 steam is introduced by a radial connection 31 on the inlet manifold 22. a I
Steam introduced from a source not shown through the manifold 22 into the jacketed sides of the section 3 and the section 2, and to the jacketed bottom of the latter, serves to cook the agitated garbage within the vessel.
In order that it may be firmly secured to J the section 3, the section 2 is formed with an apertured top flange 32 to receive studs 33 that enter tapped holes in the bottom of the Into tapped holes in the top serted after being passed through holes in a flange 35 on the bottom of the top section 4 to firmly secure it to the section 3.
The cover plate 5 is flanged for connection to the flanged top of the casting section 4 by bolts 36. Over an opening 37 in this cover plate the filler neck 5 is attached by means of studs 38. Pivotally secured to fixed arms 39, 39 on one side of the filler neck, by
a hinge pin 40, are two hinge members 41, 41
integral at their inner ends with the top of the circular charging door 6. This door is held closed by clamping bolts 42 hingedly secured at their lower ends to fixed ears 43 on the filler neck.
The steam jackets in the sealed cooker just described are separated to reduce the capacity of each compartment to meet the requirements of various safety codes for high pressure steam vessels.
Steam arising from the cooking garbage leaves the filler neck 5 through an opening 44 in the latter. Condensed steam from the jacketed portions of the casting sections 2 and 3 is discharged through a drain tube 45 which communicates with the steam passages.
27 through a radial connection 46 with the steam passages 23 through a radial connection 47 and with the botto'm'steam space 20 through a connection 48. A pet cock air vent 49 is also connectedto'thesteam jackete ed side wall of each one of the casting sections 2 and 3, and to the bottom of the s' e'ction 2.
Formedin the lower part of the double wall of the castin section '2 is a clean out opening 50 closed by a hinged door 51 that is U-shaped in cross section. This ,door, which is adapted to be held closed by bolts 52, carries a test valve 53 within its recessed portion. Through this valve a specimen of the cooked garbage may be removed for testing.
Having described my invention, I claim A garbage cooker and dryer comprising a sectional cylindrical casting having double walls to provide steam compartments, ties -betwee'nsaid walls, ribs also between said walls, said ribs being formed with holes to {pass the steam from one compartment to the other, a steam line for introducing steam to said compartments, and 'an outlet line. for the condensed steam in said compartments. In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand this 13th day ofJune, 1930.
'WILBUR A. KRAMER.
