Description

Aug. 30, 1932.- H. WALDMAN 1,875,234
PROTECTIVE BOOK COVER Filed May 2, 1932 INVENTOR Patented Aug. 30,
UNITED STATES.
HENRY WALDMAN, o -Imw-romgnl Y.
PROTECTIVE :Boox COVER 7 Application filed May 2,
but such covers are not durable when con stantly handled, nor, are they easily kept in place while in use. In order to provide an 1 eificient protective cover, for the permanent binding, as the necessity demands I have provided an inexpensive substitute therefor.
The object of this invention is to provide a protective cover for books which can be 35 easily applied and easily removed Without injury to the said cover.
Another object of my present invention is to provide an adjustable cover which can be fitted to the various sizes of books.
The protective cover may be made of leather, oiled cloth, fabric, or other suitable material. A plurality of flexible metal strips are secured to the said cover adjacent the top and bottom edges so as to bind the cover firmly to the permanent binding of the 300k. The cover may be further provided with cut-out portions, said openings being covered with transparent material so that the title of the book remains visible.
With these and other objects in view my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of the various parts described in the following specification and later claimed.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details herein disclosed, still for the purpose of showing a preferred embodiment thereof reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals designate like parts in the separate views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book with the protective cover partly in place.
Figure 2 is 'a plan view of the cover with parts broken away.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary View showing the cover adjusted to a smaller size book.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of the cover.
Figure 5 is a view of the modified form folded at the corner.
1932. Serial No.';60,8,'121. y
. Referring totlie drawing in detail,;33.denotes a book having theusual'permanent cover board portions v34, and,.35. The prote'cti've cover 36is provided with the,.,inetal strip 37, securedwithin the fold .38 .along the top-edge ,39of said cover.
' The bottom edge 40, ,of the cover..36 is provided with the metal strip 41, secured Withint-he fold 45. The edges 46.,and.47
of the, folds or hems 4-5.- and '38 are stitched down, in, this instance, .as shownat, 48 .and 49, but may be otherwise fixed.
Themetal strips 37 and 41 extend beyond the side. edges 50 and 51 asshown. The extendedends of the metal stripsz37, and 41 are covered with" cloth or other softmaterialso as not to injure thebook when-clamped over the. edges as shown at 57.
' The cover: 36 has a portion cutaway along y the line 55, said cutaway portion is covered with a transparent material 56 ;through which the nameof the book can be seen.
It may sometimes happen that thebookgis somewhat smaller than the protective cover, in-such a case, the. bottomportion of. the covering is rolled under or folded upon-:itself a pluralityof times and. adjusted tofit the book. asshownin Figure 3. v
j In Figures 4 and 5 I have shown. a modified form of cover GOhaVing the centralpo re, tion 61 cutat 62 and 63 and folded-down as, at 64. The metal strips 65v and .66. extend I from theouter edges of; the cover to:,.the p'oint'sfGTahd 68. The metal strips.,65, and 66' are secured inposition with str1ps=of.ad-. S5 hesive tape 69, or other suitable means. The upstanding portions, .70. and 71 are folded down asshown at72,.i1i Figure ,5, said fold being .breug-ht over the permanent book cover, and the outer edge ofthe protective cover is folded inwardly as shown at 73, Figure 5, which completes the operation.
To apply the protective cover 86, the book is placed over the innersurface of the cover and the sides 50 and 51 folded inwardly over the permanent cover, the metal strips being crimped sharply over the edges of said permanent cover. The extended ends of the metal strips crimped over the top and bottom edges of the book cover, as shown at 57, Figure 1, which hold the protective cover firmly in place.
Having thus described my invention and the manner in which the same may be ap- 5 plied, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A book cover of rectangular shape for the back and sides of a book comprisinga sheet of protective material, and narrow bands of flexible metal, the top and bottom edges of said material being folded a plurality of times upon itself to form a hem, said flexible bands being disposed vwithin said hem the book cover with its metal bands being equal in height to that of the book to' be. covered and longer than the combined cover boards and back of the book whereby when applied the side edges of the cover engage ithe inner surfaces of the cover boards.
2. A hook cover of substantially rectangular shape equal to the height of the book to be covered and longer than the combined back and cover boards of the book, and metal strips secured to the top and bottom edges of the cover and extending beyond the side edges of the 'cover board whereby when the cover is applied said strips may be bent around the side edges of the cover boards and into engagement with the inner surfaces of the cover boards at the top and bottom edges thereof to grip the same,
3. A protective book cover of pliable material and bands of flexible metal secured 85 adjacent the top and bottom edges of said book cover and being of a length greater than V the width of said cover and capable of being bent into clamps for securing said cover to said book.
4 V 4. A book cover of substantially rectangular shape and slightly larger than the back and sides of the book to be covered, and metal strips secured to the top and bottom edges of the cover and extending beyond the side edges of the cover wherebywhen the cover is applied said strips may be bent around the sides of the book and into engagement with the top and bottom edges of the sides of the book, each of said metal strips 5 being of one piece and extending entirely across the sides of the book and around the back.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HENRY WALDMAN.
