Description

Aug. 30, 1 932. w, JOHNSTON 1,874,540
QUICK OPENING AND SEALING ATTACHMENT Filed-0ct. l. 1930 Patented Aug. 30, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILL T. JOHNSTON, 03 SAN BENITO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOB OI ONE HALF TO LOUIS S. WITTE, OF SAN BENITO, TEXAS QUICK QPENING AND SEALING ATTACHMENT Application filed October 1, 1930. Serial No. 485,752.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in quick opening and sealing attachments for hampers, baskets and similar containers and has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated character whereby the closure may be eiiiciently held in proper position to eiiectively close the container without the securing means fastened directly thereto and which will permit the closure to have suificient movement to compensate for expansion and contraction that may be due to the contents of the container and further permit easy and quick application and removal of the closure to the container when desired.
Another object of this invention is the provision of securing elements carried by the container and traversing the mouth thereof which when finally secured to the container will retain the closure in proper place and permit the contents of the container to be easily removed or placed in the container when the closure is removed.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a quick opening and sealing attachment of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and eificient, and which will be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, 'in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a hamper with a quick opening and sealing attachment constructed in accordance with my invention associated therewith and positioned to permit the removal or replacement of the closure.
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the attachment secured in place to the container for efliciently maintaining the closure in prgper position.
igure 3 is a diagrammatic plan view lllustrating the securing elements prior to being placed on the closure.
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating my invention applied to a difierent type of container from that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a container of the hamper type which has the mouth or filling end thereof closed by a circular disk forming a closure 2. The closure 2 is of a diameter that it will snugly fit within the mouth of the container 1 and retain the contents within the container. The foregoing description relates to a well known type of container and to which my invention is applied.
A wire 3 is bent to form a loop as shown in Figure 1 overlying a portion of the closure 2 and has its ends angularly related and provided with ties or apertures 4 to receive suitable fasteners for securing the wire 3 to the container 1 that the loop portion thereof traverses. a portion of the mouth of the con tainer and also traverses the closure 2 when positioned in the mouth of the container as shown in Figure 1. The wire 3 when applied to the container will permit the'easy removal or replacement of the closure 2 and also the contents of the container 1. A securing wire or element 5 has an eye or aperture 6 formed in one end to receive a suitable fastener for attaching the same to the container 1 as shown in Figure l and the wire or element 5 is passed through the loop portion of the wire or element 3 after the closure 2 has been placed in position on the container 1. The free end of the wire or element 5 is suitably secured to the container 1 as shown in Figure 2 which ma consist of bending.
the wire or element 5 a out a fastener 7 4 carried b the container and then twisting the end 0 said wire or element about itself as clearly shown in Figure 2 tensioning the wires or elements 5 and 3 that they traverse the closure 2 as clearly shown in Figure 2 thereby retaining the closure in proper position to prevent the escape ofthe contents of the container.
However, the closure is free from the fastening means and is capable of having a limited movement to compensate for expansion and contraction of the contents contained within the container. To remove the closure it is only necessary to free the end of the wire 5 from. the fastener 7 and withdraw, said wire from engagement with the loop portion of the wire 3 whereby the closure can be easily removed by sliding the same from under the loop portion of the wire 3 and also the contents of the container may be easily emptied and again filled if desired.
As shown in Figure 2 the wires 3 and 5 when fastened to the container tor the purpose of securing the closure in proper position, the wires assume a substantially V- shape with their apeires in engagement with each other and located centrally of the closure.
Referring to Figure l, my invention or attachment is shown applied to a basket or container provided with the usual oppositely disposed loop handles 9 through which may be positioned a retaining strip 10 traversing the closure 11. The wires 3 and 5 are attached to the basket container 8 similar to the fastening of said wires to the container 1 and when secured in position to overlie the strip 10 as well as the closure 11 retaining the latter in proper position and also the strip which further aids in securing the closure in'position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that l have provided an attachment for a container which may he easily and cheaply manufactured and applied to various types of containers and when in fastened position will edectively secure the closure to the container and permit the closure to have a limited amount of movement which is necessary when the container is employed for packing vegetables, fruits, etc., and the like. Further it will be seen that the attachment will in no way interfere with the filling or emptying of the container after the closure has been removed and also the latter can be easily removed with the minimum expenditure of labor.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of. parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
that may he Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination with a container and a closure inserted therein, means for securing the closure consisting of a strand of wire fixed at both ends to the exterior of the body of the container and having an intermediate portion lying over the intermediate portion of the closure, :1. second strand of wire fixed to the exterior of the body of the container and looped through the intermediate portion of the first mentioned strand of wire at the intermediate portion of the closure, a fastoner member mounted upon the exterior of the body of the container and to which the free end of the last mentioned strand of wire is attached to stretch both strands of wire above the closure and a strip resting upon the upper edges oi the container and disposed across the closure with an intermediate portion between the closure and the looped portions of the strands whereby tension is 1mparted to both strands and the edge of the closure bound between the walls of the container.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
WILLIAM T. JOHNSTON.
