. or NEWJERSEY s'ror MOTION non KNITTING MACHINES (HOSIERY) Application filed March 24, 1928. Serial No. 264,406.
My invention relates particularly to stop motions for circular knitting machines, and comprises means adapted to be operated by the thread detecting mechanism of the ordinary stop motions employed in conjunction with this type of knitting machine, which when a thread becoming broken, slack, or otherwise irregular in its run to the needles of the machine, will rotate a stop motion operating rod, and said rod in turn will cause my improved mechanism to shift the driv ing belt of driving pulley to the loose pulley, on the main power shaft of the'machine, and simultaneously therewith apply a brake to the driving pulley, to prevent drifting or subsequent operation of the machine until such time as the stop motion has been reset, after the irregularity in the runningthread has been properly corrected.
In view'of the thread detecting means of r the stop motion forming no part ofthe present invention, such mechanism has been omitted from the accompanying drawings, of which: v

Fig. 8 is a side elevation of my invention as applied to a Wildman machine;
Fig. 9 is a front elevation of the mechanism shown in Fig. 8, and
Fig. 10 is a perspective viewof' a portion of the mechanism shown in Figs. 8 and 9.
In-Figs. 1 and 3, the main frame of a Bannerahosiery knitting machine is, illusthe knitting machine from. the
trated at 1, in which is rotatably mounted the'main drive shaft 2 having a tight high speed driving pulley 3 secured thereto, a low speed drive pulley 4:, and a loose pulley 5, of equal diameter with the tight pulley 3,
' being rotatably mounted on the shaft 2. A
belt shifting yoke 6 is rigidly attached to a shift rod 7 whichis slidably mounted inthe main frame of the machine and is adapted to move the driving belt (not shown) from one to the other of the above mentioned driving pulley wheels, as required. For this purpose a cam 8,-which is a standard part of the Banner machine as shown and de scribed in the U. S. Letters Patent to Joshua D. Hemphill, No. 933,443, dated September 7, 1909, is rotatably mounted on the frame 1', and engages a lug9 on the belt-shifteryoke 6. A. spring 10 holds the lug 9 in operative contact with the cam 8, and tends to normally maintain the driving belt in position on the high-speed driving pulley 3.
Accord'ng to the principles of my invention, I mount a'ca'sing 11 on the main frame 1 of the machine. A pair of lugs 12, 12 project horizontally from the casing 11 for the pivotal support 13 of a'double bell-crank lever 14, one arm 15 of which is adapted'to engage the lug 9 of the belt-shifting yoke 6, a second arm 16 being provided with a roller 17 which rides on an angularly disposed or inclined end 18 of a bar 19 horizontally: and slidably mounted in the casing 11. A'third arm 20 of the double bell-crank lever 1 L has one end of a spring 21 attached thereto, the opposite end of the springbeing attached at 22 tothe casing 11.
. The roller 17 of the bell-crank lever .1 1 normally occupies a position near the peak 23 of the inclined end 18 of the slide bar 19 and thereby maintains the arm 15 of the lever 14:
in an inactive position, illustrated in Fig. 3. Upon moving the said slide bar 19 longitudinally the inclined end thereof moves away from the roller 17 permitting the bellcrank lever the arm 15 to engage the lug 9 of the bell shifter 6, thereby moving the belt from the driving pulley 3 to the loose pulley 5. This movement is accomplished by means of the 1 1 to turn on its pivot 13 and l spring 21 which overcomes the tension of the spring 10 the spring 10 being of lesser strength than the spring 21.
Longitudinal movement of the slide bar 19 in one direction is effected by a compression spring 24, which is confined between the rear end of the casing 11 and a lug 25 on the slide bar 19, and encircles a rod 26 which projects axially through the spring 24 from the casing 11 and through an opening formed in the lug 25. The slide bar 19 is manually moved in an opposite direction by a lever 27 pivoted at 28 to the casing 11 and adapted to engage a pin 29 which extends laterally from the slide bar 19 A second lateral pin 30 extends from the bar 19, and acts as a limit stopffor the lever 27. A rod 31 is pivotally attached to the free end of the lever 27, and extends forward to the front of the machine being there provided with a handle 32.
The slide bar 19 is held in its set position against the action of the-spring 24 by means of a locking lever 33 which is pivoted at 34 to the casing 11 and has a longitudinal slot 35 formed in its body portion. The slot 35 has an offset recess 36 adapted to receive a locking pin 37 which extends laterally from one side of the slide bar 19. The locking lever 33 is provided with a shoulder projection 38 adapted to be engaged and held by a latch 39 which is pivoted at 40 to the casing 11. ;A spring 41 holds the latch 39 111 operative engagement with the locking lever 33.
Atrip arm. or pin 42 extends horizontally from a vertically disposed trip shaft 43 which is rotatably mounted in the casing 11, and is operatively connected by means of a stop motion trip rod 44 to the thread detecting mechanism (not shown) of the stop motion.
A brake lever 45 is pivoted at 46' to a lug 47 on the casing 11, and is provided with an eccentrically disposed, pivot 48 for a brake shoe 49, intermediate the pivot 46 and the free end of the brake lever 45. The brake shoe 49 is adapted to engage one of .the driving pulleys 3 or 4. 7
Abrake-applying lever 50 is pivoted at 51 in the casing 11, and is provided atone end with an adjusting screw 52 adapted to engage the free end of the brake lever 45. A
spring 53 is stretched between the opposite end of the brake-applying lever 50 and the casing 11. A holding pin 54 on the slide bar 19 holds the brake-applying lever 50 against the action of the spring 53.
In operation, when the stop motion trip rod 44 is partially rotated by the operation of the thread detecting mechanism of the stop motion the pin or arm 42 engages the free end of the latch 39, turning it on its pivot and thereby releasing the said latch from the locking lever 33. When released, the locking lever 33 turns on its pivot and the locking pin 37 moves out of the recess 36 into the slot 35 which releases the slide bar 19. The slide bar 19 is immediately moved longitudinally by the spring 24, the locking pin 37 moving freely in the slot 35 of the locking lever 33. Longitudinal movement of the slide bar 19 by its spring 24 causes the inclined or angular end 18 thereof to move away from the roller 17 .on the bell-crank lever 14, thereby permitting the said bellcrank lever to turn on its pivot by action of its spring 21, which causes the arm 15 of the said bell-'cranklever to engage the lug 9 on the belt-shifter 6, and thus move the driving belt off the driving pulleys and onto the loose pulley 5. This longitudinal movement of the slide bar 19'also causes the stop or holding pin 54 to move away from the brake-applying lever 50, permitting thislever to be turned on its pivot by its spring 53 which causes the screw 52 to engage the free end of the brake lever 45 and thereby apply the brake sleeve 49 to the tight pulley with which it is ali ned, thereby stopping the knitting machine. 7
Figs. 4 to 7 inclusive show an adaptation of the invention applied to a ""Brinton niachine, the main frame of which is indicated at 1a, having a main shaft 2a onwhich is mounted the usual high-speed tight pulley 3a and the usual low speed and loose pulleys 4 and 5 respectively, which'are of the same diameter as the pulley 3m In this type of machine, the belt-shifting yoke 6a is secured to a shift rod 7a which is slidably mounted in suitable bearings on the frame let for moving the belt from the high speed to'the low speed pulley. This opera tion is eifected at the proper time from and by suitable cams secured on a drum 60, through mechanism (not shown) forming no part of the present invention. Movement of the belt-shifting rod 7a and the yokeha to effect a movement of the belt from either the high speed or low speed pulleys to the loose pulley, and vice versa, is controlled by a toggle 61 which when the levers thereof are longitudinally extended moves the belt to either of the-power pulleys when collapsed permits the movement of the belt to the loose pulley by a spring (not shown) trols the sliding movement of the shift bar 7 a effects the shifting of the belt to the loose pulley.
My invention relative tothis type ofmachine comprises a casing 11a which issecured to the machine frame 1a. Horizontally and I slidab-ly'mountedin the casing 11a is a slide to be engaged by a latch bar 19a which is connected by a link 631130 a vertically slidable trip vbar 64, the'upper end of which is provided with an adjustable abut: ment in the form of ,a screw 65 which is adapted to engage the drum end the'lever 62 and thereby collapse the toggletil for effecting the stopping of the machine. 7
' A spring 24a is adapted to efiect the longitudinal sliding movement of the bar 19a in 10 an operative direction, and the bar 19a is adapted to be moved in the opposite resetting direction by a lever 27a pivoted at 2864 to the casing 11a. One end of the lever 27a is adapted to engagea pin 29a which extends laterally from the slide bar 19a, and to the opposite end of the lever 27a is connected an operating rod 31a. r V
A locking lever 33a is pivoted at 34a to the casing, and is provided with a slot 35a and a notch 36a in which a locking pin 37a, extending laterally from the slide'b ar 19a, is adapted to operate. The locking lever 33a is provided with a shouldered end 38a adapted 39a which is pivoted at 40a to the casing 11a; A spring 41a holds the latch i060 in operative engagement with the locking lever 33a. 7
' The'latch 39a is engaged by a pin or lever arm 42a which evtends laterally from a shaft 43a rotatably mounted in the casing 11a and The arm 70, shaft 43a and arm'42a form a hell-crank lever for operating the latch 39a.
- The arm 7 0 is adapted to be engaged by an arm 71 secured to one end of a short vertical shaft .72 rotatably mounted in a bearing 7 3 on the. casing 110a The upperjend of the short shaft 72 is operatively connected to the rotatable stop motion trip rod 44a of the machine.
The casing 11a has an extended bracket l'la on which is pivotally mounted at 46a a brake lever a. The brake lever 45a has an eccentrically located pin 48a on which is pivotally mounted a brake shoe 49a. The brake shoe is adapted to engage the tight pulleyBa on the main drive shaft 2a of the machine. The brake lever 45a is adapted to be enage'd by a threaded stud 52a carried by the slide bar In the operation of this form of the invention, when a thread becomes slack or broken the stop motion trip rod 44a is partially rotated, which rotates the short shaft 72 causing the arms 71 thereon to engage the arm of the bell-crank lever 704864-4260. The arm 42a of the said bell-crank leverbears down on one end of the latch 39a raising the opposite end against the action of the spring 41a and releasing the locking lever 83a. WVhen released, the locking lever is swung on its pivot by the pin 37a moving out of the notch 6a into the slot 35a, which assumes a position parallel to the slide bar 19a, under the provided at its outer end with an arm, 70.-
influence "of the spring 240 which eifects longitudinal movement of theslide bar 19a.
As the slide bar 19a is moved horizontally.
bythe spring 24:11 the stud 52a engages the end ofthe brake lever 45a, swinging the same in its pivot Mia and thereby ap )lying the brake 49a to the pulley 3a. Simu taneously therewith the link 63 moves'the vertical slide bar G tupwardly, the stud '65 engaging and raising the drum end of the lever 62,.which swings about its pivot depressing thev toggle end thereofwhich engages the toggle til and collapses the same, whereupon the spring (not shown) which controls thellongitudinal move ment of the shift rod 7a causes the said shift rod to be moved'longitudinally, causing the belt shifting yoke 6a to move accordingly and consequently moving the drive belt from the tight to the loose pulley of the machine.
To reset the device the rod 810,. is operated toturn the lever 27a on its pivot, whereupon the said lever engages the pin 29a on the slide bar 19a and moves the same rearwardly. The rearward movement of the slide bar 19a,
through the link 63, lowers the verticaltrip bar 64 and thereby releases the toggle operating lever 62, and at the same time the pin 37a moves into the notch 36a in the locking lever 33a, turning the same on its pivot until the end. 38a thereof is engaged and held-by the latch 39a. This rearward movement of the slide bar 1901, releases the brake lever 45a and placesthe spring 24a under tension for subse;
quent operation of the slide bar 19a'when the trip rod 44a is again rotated by thebreaking or other irregular condition in'the thread.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 illustrate another form of the invention as applied toa machine of the Wildman type, and co mprises a casing 11% adapted to be secured to the frame of the machine, and having a slide bar 19?) mounted for horizontal movement there-in. A spring 24?) is adapted to move the slide bar in a direction to applythe brake 49b tothe drive pulley 3b of the machine. Movement of the slide bar in this direction is restrained by a locking lever 33?) pivoted at 346 to the casing 11?), and having a notch 36?) at the vertex of the divergent sides of-a: slot or mouth 35.7)
formed in the locking lever 33?). Thenotch 36b is adapted to receive and holda pin 876 which extends laterally from and is rigidly secured in the slide bar 19?). a v The outer end 38?) of the locking lever 33?) is engaged and held in its locking position by gaged by an arm or pin 42?) pro ecting from a vertically disposed rotatable shaft 43?),
which is operatively connected to the stop motion trip rod 44?) on the machine. v
The brake shoe 49b is pivotally mounted on a pin 48?) which is eccentrically located on? il 19b is a bracket 50?) which carriesv a stud "use 526 adapted to engage the brake lever 45b and thereby apply the brake 49b tothe drive p ultey 3b of the machine, when the latch 39?) istripped by rotary action of the trip rod 44?), which releases the locking lever 33?) permitting the same to turn on its pivot and thereby release the pin 376 from the retaini-ng notch 36?) in the locking lever 33?), Whereupon the spring 24:?) will move "the slide bar 19b longitudinally to apply the brake.
The slide bar19b is 'moved in the opposite or resettingdirection by a lever 27?) pivoted :at 286 to the casing 11?). One end of the lever 27b engages a pin 30?) which extends laterally from the slide bar 19?), and the opposite end of the lever has an opening 7 5 through which a setting rod 316 passes. On one end of the rod 31?) is a collar 76 which is adapted to engage the lever 27. when the rod 815 'is moved longitudinally forward. The opposite end of the rod 316 is pivotally connected to a setting lever. 32?) which is pivoted at any convenient place on a rigid part of the machine. A spring77 maintains the resetting levers 27b, 32b and the resetting rod 316 in an inoperative position.
When the slide bar 315 moves to apply the brake 49 72, the pin 30?) therein engages the lever 27 band turns it on its pivot, the lower end of said lever moving along the rod 31?) into contact with the collar 7 6. By pulling the le'ver 326, "the 31?) is moved longitudinally forward, the collar 76 engaging the lower end of the lever 27b rocks the lever 27?) o n its pivot .and consequently moves the slide bar 19?) rearwa-rdlyto release the brake 495. In the rearward movement of the slide bar 19?), the 'pin 37?) thereon enters the mouth 8560f the locking lever33b and upon striking the edge 78 0f said mouth 35b turns the lever 836 on its pivot, the notch 36?) engaging and -'-hold'ing the pin-37b and the forward end 38?; 'of th'e lever 33?) engaging the latch 396 which thereafter holds the lever 33b in its locking position. I
The belt shifting yoke 66 of this type of 'mach'ine is carried by a lever which is pivoted at 81 to a bracket 82 secured to the frame 17) oft-he machine. 011 the pivot 81 'is also pivotallymounted a lever 83, the'upper end of which is provided with a bearing 88a for a shaft 84. On one end of the shaft'8 l is secured a handle 85 and a lever 86. The lever 86 is provided with a slot 87 having a notch 88. A pin 89 on'the lever 80 is located in the notch 89, and holds the lever 80 and the belt shifting yoke 6?) in position to maintain the belt on the drive "pulley 3?) against the action o'ffa'spring 90. i I The drivebe'ltis shifted from one drive operating element. f
pulley'3b-to another drive pulley 4:?) for driv-r ing the, machine at either high or low speed by means of-a'suitable cam (not shown) forming no part of the present invention.
The drive belt is shifted from either of the drive pulleys to the loose pulley 5?), when the slide bar 19?) is moved longitudinally to apply the brake, by a cam 91, on the bracket 50?), engaging a lever 92secured to ashort shaft 83 rotatably mounted in a bearing 9st formed in the bracket 47?). A lever is also securedto the short shaft 93, and is adapted to engage a lever 96 secured to the rear end of the shaft 84 carried by the lever 83.
In operation, as the slide bar 19?) moves'forward to apply the brake the cam 91 engages the lever 92 which turns the shaft 93 .and lever 95 carried thereby.
