:its construction and operation,
PATENT PAUL KAMERER, OF OHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I87,389, dated February 13, 1877; application filed August :2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL KAMERER, of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combination-chair, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my used as a reclining-chair. section of the same, used as a rocking-chair. Fig. 3 shows one end of the chair-back. Fig. 4 shows the chair as an ordinary rockingchair; and Fig. 5 shows it as an ordinary arm-chair. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the seat of the chair.
' The sides of my chair consist of frames, each frame consisting of two upright legs, A A, connected at the top by a crossbar, B, and at a convenient height for the seat by another crossbar, U. Below this latter cross-bar a round, a, connects the two legs.
D is the seat, having across-bar, D, on the under side, along the front and rear edges. At each end of each of these cross-bars is a metal plate, I), the outer end of which is bent to form a hook, at, and takes into similar hooks y, formed upon the upper ends of plates 61, attached to the inner sides of the legs. The seat is further supported at the front and rear by two inclined braces, E E, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the legs A, and the upper ends form hooks 2'. These hooks take into holes in a metal plate, f, fastened to the cross-bar D, and the braces held by means of latches h, pivoted to said plate.
When to be used as a reclining-chair, the elongated back G is fastened in the rear legs, a short distance above the seat, by bolts k k, arranged in the lower edge thereof, so that the back can be turned at any angle dechair, Fig. 2 is a vertical sired, and is held at any point by hook-arms- H H, pivoted to the back and fastened into either one of a series of staples, e c, on the inner side of the top crossbars or arms B of the side frames. The back G may be provided with similar hookarms near the upper end, and also hooks or pins for the attachment of cords m m, as shown in Fig. l, which cords are to serve as side supports for a musquito or fly net. b
I represents the foot-rest, or extension of the seat, detachably hinged to the front of the seat and adjusted at any angle desired, and held by means of two ratchet-bars, n n, engaging in notches z 2 on the braces E.
J represents a table-leaf fastened by hooks p p on top of the side bars B B, at the front.
This table-leaf J may be used to form the back, instead of the adjustable back G, when the chair is to be usedas an ordinary armchair or rocking-chair.
For the purpose of making it into a rockingchair, each leg A has an L-shaped foot, 8, and the rockers R are provided with sockets t, for these feet to take into, after which bolts 21 on the legs are pushed down, entering the ends of the feet and locking them in position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the side frames A B O, the seat D, metal plates b d, with hooks 00 y, metal braces E. with hooks i, perforated plate f, and latches h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the chair-frame, of the back G, with sliding bolts 70 k, pivoted armhooks-H, and staples e, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the chair-legs A with L-shaped feet s, the rockers R, with sockets t, and the sliding bolts 1;, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th day of July, 1876.
