This invention relates to internal combustion engines and more particularly to oiling systems therefor. Y
Substantially all oil filtering and refining devices employed in oiling systems for :internal combustion engines have the inherent disadvantage that they require personal attention in the matter of cleansing, and where the personal equation enters into such matters cleansing is not generally performed at the required time, hence filtering or refining devices have not proved entirely satisfactory. The present invention proposes to correct this condition by providing means for'connecting a filter unit with a cover for the oil supply tube so that the opening and closing of the'cover automatically operates a cleaning means for the filter.
An object of the invention is to provide means for cleaning afilter. automatically operated upon the opening and closing of the cover for the oil supply tube.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide an oil filtering or refining device housed within the crank case of'an internal combustion engine and connected to the cover of the oil supply tube for thecrankcase so that upon opening and closing the cover the filtering or refining device will be operated automatically.
A further object of the invention is to provide an oil filtering or cleansing device arranged within the crankcase of an internal combustion engine and connected in the oiling system of theengine and to the cover for the oil supply tube so that, upon opening and closing the cover periodically for supplying oil to the system, the filtering or refining device will be automatically cleansed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described and to construct the same in a durable manner wherein the cooperative parts are concealed from view, are protected from dust, dirt or foreign substance and are readily accessible for replacement or repairs.
- Yet a further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is highly efficient in operation and yet of marked simplicity as a whole and in respect toeach of its component parts so that its manufacture is economically facilitated,
both as regards parts and their assembly.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which:

Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on H, Fig.1. r a Referring to the drawing for more specific detailsof the invention, 10 represents generally the crank case of an internal combustionengine having positioned therein an oil filter 11. As shown, the crankcase is of the usual split type structure comprising a crank case proper indicated at 12 and an oil pan 13 secured thereto in the conventional manner.
Positioned in the oil pan on oneside thereof is a suitable opening 14 having secured therein a housing 15. As shown, the housing 15 has a boss 16 tapped to receive a drain or oleanout plug 17 and the boss 16 isexternally threaded as indicated .at 18'. This boss extends through the opening 1A in the side wall of the oil pan and a nut 19 is threaded thereon. This structure provides, suitable drain or cleanout means for the housing, an adequate support therefor. In the bottom of the housing 15 is a boss 20 having a bore 21 and mounted for rotation in the bore 21 is a shaft carries a cylindrical member 23 provided with aplurality of circumferential slots 24: and a number of passages 25 parallel to the axis of the shaft or, if preferred, the cylindrical member 23 may be built up by, a plurality of individual disks suitably spaced and provided with registering apertures to form passages corresponding to the passages 25. This member constitutes the filtering element which may be inany preferred form.

The chamber 29 has an outlet port 31 adapted to be connected by a pipe line, not shown, to the manifold of the oiling system and an intake port 32 is provided for ad- I mitting oil from a pipe line through which oil is fed under pressure to a chamber 33 positioned in the cover and communicating with the housing 15 in which the filter element is positioned.
- The cover has formed thereon a boss 34 bored to receive the shaft22, the upper end of which is journaled in a suitable bracket 35 and has secured thereon a beveled gear 36. A transverse shaft 37 is mounted in oppositely disposed bosses 38 in the breather or oil supply tube 39. The shaft 37 has keyed thereon between the bracket 35' and one of the bosses 38 a beveled gear 40 in mesh with the beveled gear 36 and suitably secured upon the shaft is a spur gear 41, the object of which will hereinafter appear.
Pivotally secured upon the top of the breather or oil supply tube 39 is a cap 42 having secured thereto or formed integral therewith a rack 43 in mesh with the spur gear 41 so that upon raising or lowering the cap 42, the rack will causethe shaft 37 to rotate and to drive through the gears 40 and 35, theshaft 22. The rotation of the shaft 22 rotates the filter element or unit 23 and upon the rotation thereof the wipers or fingers 28 engaging the slots thoroughly brush and cleanse the filter unit. Thus, periodically upon supplying oil to the crank case the filter unit is thoroughly cleansed. The cap or cover 42 is secured in closed position by a spring finger 42 shown in Fig. 1.
Although this invention has been described in connectionwith certain specific embodiment-s, the principles involved are susceptible of numerous other applications that will readily occur to persons skilled in the art. The invention is, therefore, to be limited only as indicated by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim and de- "sire to secure by Letters Patent is: p
1. In combination with an internal coma crank case having an oil supply tube, a filter, a cover for'the tube and means interconnecting the cover and filter for cleansing the filter upon opening or closing the cover.
2. In combination with an internal combustion engine including a crank case having an oil supply tube, a filter, a cover for the tube and means controlled by the cover for cleansing the filter upon movement of the cover.
. 3.. In combination with an internal combustion engine including a crank case having an oil supply tube, a filter, a cover for the tube and means actuated by the cover to operate the filter for the cleansing thereof.

In combination with an internal combustion engineincluding a crank case having an oil supply tube and a cover therefor, a filter having a rotatable filtering element, a wiper for the filtering element and means connected between the filtering element and cover for rotating the element upon movement of the cover.

In combination with an internal combustion engine'including a crank case having an oil supply tube, a filter, a rotatable filtering element in the filter, a wiper for the filtering element, a cover for the supply tube and means includinga rack anda gear con necting. the filtering element and the cover for rotating the element upon movement of the cover.
6. In combination with an internal combustion engine including a crank case having a supply tube, a filter, a filtering element in the filter, a wiper associated with the filtering element, a cover for the supply tube and means connecting the cover and the filtering element including a shaft, a train of gearing and a rack for rotating the element upon movement of the cover.
7. In combination with an internal combustion engine including a crank case having an oil supply tube, a. cover for the supply tube, a filter in the crank case, a. shaft journa-led in the filter and extendinginto the tube, a filtering element on the shaft, a wiper for the filtering element, a gear on the shaft, a shaft journaled transversely in the tube, a gear on the transverse shaft meshing with the gear on the first mentioned shaft, a spur gear on the transverse shaft and a rack on the cover in mesh with the spur gear.
8. In combination with an internal combustion engine including a crank case having an opening therein through which lubricant may be introduced into the case, a movable cover for the opening, a lubricant-filtering meansassociated with the engine, said lubricant-filtering means being provided with a cleaning means, and means interconnee-ting the cover and lubricant-filtering means for relatively moving the filtering means and its cleaning means on movement of the cover.
9. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the crank case having an opening through which lubricant may be introduced, a movable cover for the opening, a filter having cleaning means, said cover being so interrelated with said cleaning means that the operation of moving the cover from closed and secured position to an open position causes a cleaning movement of said cleaning means.
10. In an engine, the combination of a crank case having a lubricant filling opening, a movable cover for said opening, a filter having movable cleaning means, and means interconnecting said cover and said cleaning means.
