McADOO, WILLIAM MCAZDOO, JR., ANI enonen ALLEN GOODYEAR wnL'rING Application filed March 23, 1931. Serial No. 524=,662.
The principal object of the present invention is to obtain full extension of the Good year welting from comparatively narrow stock, thereby efiecting an economy while at the same time providing efiicient welting in respect to the operation of manufacturing the product and to the finished product.
To this and other ends hereinafter stated or appearing, the invention generally stated comprises Goodyear welting having a groove near one of its edges and having teeth or projections at that edge, the teeth being beveled toward their points and toward said groove.
The invention also comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed. g
In the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof and in which Figure 1 is a top or plan view of a strip of stock from which two Goodyear welts or, more accurately, welt blanks, are cut.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a Goodyear welt embodying features of the invention, and
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic transverse sectional view of a shoe embodying a Goodyear welt of the invention.
Referring to the drawing and merely in order to describe the invention, but without intending to limit the invention to any particular dimensions and using certain dimensions merely for the sake of explanation, 1 represents stock assumed to be thirty thirtyseconds of an inch Wide. 2 and 3 are strips cut from the stock 1 along a wavy or jagged line 4., so that each strip has a picot or toothed edge, and from the tip of any of the points to the straight edge, the strip is sixteen thirty-seconds of an inch wide, so that each strip provides full extension to the extent of sixteen thirty-seconds of an inch, thus there is produced from stock thirty thirtyseconds of an inch wide, two Goodyear welt strips in effect sixteen thirty-seconds of an inch Wide and there results a saving of leather which is very material and substantial considering the tremendous quantity of Goodyear welts used. Referring to Fig. 2, a Goodyear welt embodying features of the invention is providedwith a straight edge 5 and with a picot 0r toothed edge 6.. Near the picot edge 6 there is a groove 7 running the length of the welting and sometimes called a stitch groove. The picot edge is beveled toward the points of the teeth and toward the groove as at 8. One way to do this is to remove a portion 9 indicated in Fig. 2 by dotted lines. Referring to Fig. 3, the teeth or points of the picot edge 6 operate to permit the welt 2 to be properly stitched to the upper 10 and to the insole 11, a stitch being indicated at 12. Since the points or teeth of the picot edge 6 permit of the proper incorporation of the Goodyear welt into the structure of the shoe, it follows that the extension of the welt is the full extension of a welt, using the dimensions heretofore referred to descriptively, sixteen thirty-seconds of an inch wide, although two I such welts were produced from stock only thirty thirty-seconds of .an inch wide. Before the application of the outer sole 13, the
seam or joint shown at the left in Fig. 3 is' trimmed, and after the trimming, sented at the right in Fig. 3. In the trimming operation the points 6, having served their purpose, are removed, but the full extension of the Goodyear welt remains.
It is evident that the side faces of the teeth or points of the picot edge are perpendicular to the faces of the welting and that this is advantageous in the formation of two welting strips 2 and 3 from one strip of stock 1 whereby a savi g in stock is efi'ected as has been described.
It is not the intention to limit the-shape of the points or teeth to rounded or pointed by the use of the term picot edge since either shape may beemployed.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and arrangement and matters of mere form without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than the prior are and the appended claims may require I claim: 3
1. Goodyear welting having a straight is reprei edge and a picot edge and having a groove near the picot edge, the picot edge being beveled towards the ends of its teeth or points and towards the groove, the side faces of the teeth or points of the picot edgebeingperpendicular to the faces of the" welting.
2. Goodyear welting having a straight I edge and a picot edge and having a groove a near the 'picot edge, the picot'edgebeing beveled towards the ends eras teeth or points and towards the groove, thevdistance between" the adjacent Wall of the groove andthe .bot-
toms of the indentations of the picot edge being limited to provide substantially the substance required for the seam to attach it to the upper, thereby minimizing the amount of leather cut off in the trimming operation and providing full extension of the Welt, the side faces of the teeth or points ofth'e picot edge being perpendicular to the faces of the weltin 3 WILLI M F.
