MILTON B. REACH, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO A. G. BROS, OF NEW YORK, N; Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY SPALDING &
RUBBER EXERCISIIQ'G- STRAP Application filed December 26, 1936. Serial No. 504,938.
The invention relates to an exercising device for use either as an arm and body exerciser, or for use in combination with a wall bracket to simulate the action of a chest weight where the bracket is placed shoulder high, or of a rowing machine when the bracket is placed near the floor line.
The invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a front view of the device for use as an arm or body exerciser. v
Fig. 2 is a front view showing the device as combined with awall bracket for use as a chest exerciser.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the wall bracket.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the wall bracket, and
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of a fragmentary portion of the exerciser.
The exerciser comprises a band of rubber 1 which may be of any suitable form, but in the particular embodiment shown herein is provided with beads or reinforcements of rubber integral with the main body, extending along the edges of the said body as at 2. At the ends of this hand there are grips 3 of rubber molded integrally with the band and beads, and projecting slightly at each end beyond the margin of the hand. These rubber grips are perforated longitudinally as at 4 to receive metal rods indicated at 5. These rods project beyond the ends of the rubber grip, and one of them is adapted-to be seated in a bracket 6, having means for attachment to the wall, such as the openings 7 to receive attaching screws.
The brackets comprise a base plate and ears 8, one of which is provided with an opening 9, and the other with a slot 10, which has an inclined portion 11, and a forwardly extending portion 12, the latter forming the seat for the rod in line with the opening in the opposite ear of the bracket.
The device may be used as an arm and body exerciser by grasping the rubber grips and stretching the band, and when so used, the metal rods are removed from the grips.
if the device is to be used as a wall exercising apparatus, the metal rods are applied to the grips by inserting them in the longitudinal openings of said grips, and then one rod is used as a handle, and the other rod is mounted in the wall bracket, and thus holds the device to the wall for use either as'a chest weight apparatus, or as a rowing apparatus. The rod which secures the device to'the wall bracket may be inserted after the grip is introduced betweenthe ears of the bracket.
Thejmetal rods 5 are of slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the openings through the rubber grips so that the fit between these parts will be suificiently tight to maintain the rods in place against ordinary pressures, enabling the assembly to be used as a wall exerciser without danger of having the parts becoming disconnected.
The metal rodbars in the bracket, and the rubber grips act as stops against the inner sides of the ears to maintain the connection between the rods and the bracket.
The slot in the bracket is to allow the assembly, consisting of the rubber grip with the metal rod in place therein, to be seated in the bracket by first inserting one end of the rod in the hole in one ear of the bracket and then moving the other end portion of the rod laterally through the slot and into the seat in the other ear of the bracket.
The device can be assembled, however, as above intimated, by first inserting the rubber grip between the ears of the bracket and thereafter threading the metal rod through the ears.
The appliance may be used as a wall apparatus as above described, but with the metal rod omitted from the grip which is used as a handle.
A plurality of the exercisers may be arranged-side by side one for each hand. As they project beyond the side edges of the band 1,the grips 3 are adapted to be engaged outwardly of as well as between said, edges, with the result that they may be firmly and comfortably held in the hands While using the device.
I claim:
1. An exerciser comprising a band of rubher having grips molded to the ends thereof and extending beyond the side edges of the band, substantially as described.
2. An exerciser comprising a band of rubber having grips molded to the ends thereof and extending beyond the side edges of the V band, said grips being perforated lengthwise,
and rods adapted to be seated in said perfora- 'tions and to project beyond the ends of'the grips substantially as described.
3. An exerciser comprising a rubber band having enlargements molded thereto at its ends with rods seated in said-enlargements and proJecting beyond the ends of the same, 1 one of said rods being adapted to be seated ber thereon.
5. An exerciser comprising a band of rubber having beads at its side edges, and rubber grips formed integrally with the endsof the band and ribs, the grips extending. beyond both faces and both side edges ofthe band;
In testimony Whereof'I aflix my signature.
