6 and 7, one of spindle shafts 28is rotatably mounted in sleeve 40 by means of ball bearings 33, which together with sleeve 35, pinned to the spindle shaft 28, prevent endwise movement of the spindle relative to sleeve 40, the ball bearings being held in their seats by 'ring nuts 39. Sleeve 40 is slidably mounted in the cylindrical head portion 32 of pedestal 23 and held against rotative movement therein by key 41, slidable in ke -way 42.

With this cooperates a link 47, pivoted at one end midway along lever 43 and at its other end to an anchor bar `45, slidable in a slot formed in head 32, and releasably secured in place by set screw 46.- For locking the toggle, when a web roll is4 rotatabl `supported in running position and there y reventing endwise movement of this spindle 27, a notched plate 48 is provided, rigidly secured to the bracket 44 and cooperating with a rod V49 slidable in guides 50 along lever 43 and moved into, and out of, engagement with the notches on plate '48 by movement of releasing lever 51. A
spring between releasing lever Milind lever 43 .normally maintains the rod 49 in enga ement with one of the notches to lock the toggle. An
arm 52 extends from lever 43 and cooperates with stop pin 54 on link 44 -to prevent excessive movement ofthe spindle, and the position ofthe spindle relative to its support may be varied by variably positioning anchor bar 45 in its'slot.. i
Means are provided for temporarily receving web rolls from the truck or other instrumentali on which they 'are brought up to the web 'andling and supporting mechanism and comprises a cradle onto which the web rollmay be rolled and by which it is raised into position to be engaged b the indles for rotatably supporti the we roll 1n running position. Asem ied, the cradle comln the present illustrative embodiment, the
cradle is vertically movable and held against endwise or sidewise movement by verticallyextending guides 66 at each side of the cradle ends, which guides engage with corresponding guideways cut in the end frames 68.
vMeans are also provided for vertically mov-l ing the cradle to lift the web roll, temporarily received on the cradle, into engagement with the spindles and, as embodied, comprises a pair of cables 67, 68 at each end of the cradle adapted to be wound on or unwound from power-driven drums 69. As here shown, a shaft 70, extending longitudinally and at one side of the bed of the web supporting and handling mechanism and journalled in brackets 72 at one side of the end frames 22 of lthe bed is connected with motor 74 by gear 75 and pinion 76. Drums 69 are mounted on shaft 70, and tolf' these drums are-fastened cables 67 and 68 which run over pulleys 77, 78, 79 and 80, 81, 82 respectively, and are fastened at their other ends near'the corners of the cradle. Pulleys 77, 78, 80 and 81 are rotatably iournalled in brackets formed integrally with the end frames 22 of the web roll supporting and handling mechanism, and pulleys 79 and 82 are journalled on stub shafts fastened to the outside of the end frames. As the motor 74 rotates in one direction the cables are wound on their respective drums and raise the cradle, and after the web roll has been engaged by the spindles, unwind to lower the cradle onto. the bed of the mechanism in readiness to receive a new web roll when the new roll is to be placed in running position.
For accommodating web rolls of different widths, so that full-widths, three-quarter width, half-width, or quarter width webs can be fed to the printing press or other webusing mechanism as the necessities of the work may require, the supporting members or pedestals 23, 24 are slidably supported on the bed of the machine so the distance between these spaced-apart members canbe varied as desired. For this purpose, alined, spacedapart rollers 84 are journalled at each side of the base portion 26 of the supporting members and corresponding channel-like trackways 85 are cut on the'inside of the side frame members 20 of the base of the web roll sup orting and handling mechanism. The trac ways and cooperating rollers give the bases of the pedestals greater rigidity and prevent any tilting of the pedestals which might otherwise occur. Rollers 84 are preferably journalled on thev pedestal bases by means of headed stub-shafts 86 held in place by nuts 87.V A
Means are provided for spacing the pedestal members apart and for preventing their movement along the bed of the web roll supporting mechanism, and comprise a threaded shaft 90, extending longitudinally and centrally of the base of the mechanism and rotatably journalled in the end frames 22 of themechanism. Shaft 90 is held against endwise movement, with respect to the frame by means of collar 91 and gear 92, and the supporting members or pedestals are held against movement along the threaded shaft by means of threaded sleeves 94 engaging the threaded shaft 90, the threaded sleeves being centrally positioned at the bottom of the supports or pedestals 23 and 24.
For registering the web of paper or other material as it is paid off the web roll and with respect to the printing press or other webusing machine, means are provided for moving the supporting members 23, 24 and spindles 27 in unison and laterally of the web, whereby the web roll may be accurately. moved to one side or the other and in the present instance, these means comprise a bevel gear 95 mounted on vertically extending shaft 96 journalled in brackets 97 extending from one of the end frames 22. Gear 95 meshes with the corresponding bevel gear 92 iXedly secured to the'threaded shaft 90 and as hand wheel 98, secured to shaft 96, is turned, threaded shaft 90 is rotated causing a corresponding lateral movement of each of the pedestals or supporting members 23 and 24.
Means are also provided for disengaging the threaded sleeves at the bottoms of the pedestals or supporting members-from the threaded shaft and for allowing the pedestals to be moved along the threaded shaft and for this purpose, the threaded sleeve is preferablyformed in a plurality of separable sections so the sleeve can be expanded leaving the pedestals free to be moved toward or from each other. As embodied, each threaded sleeve 94 is formed as a split-nut, .the two halves of which are formed, on their sides,.
with guide plates 99 and fitted between guides 100 formed in the base of the pedestals, as best shown in Figs. 8-ll. Means are provided for holding the two halves of the threaded sleeve in engagement with the threaded shaft and for moving the sections apart, when desired, and comprise cam plates 102, at either end of the threaded sleeve and fitted over the threaded shaft 90, which plates are rotatably mounted by recessed guide plates 104 bolted on the pedestal base and over the cam plates 102. Cam' plates 102 are provided with spiral cam slots 105 in which run small cam rollers 106 rotatably mounted at each end of each of the sections of sleeves 94. As the plate 102 is turned, the cam slots cause the halves of the sleeve toY be moved toward or away from each other and on the guides 100.
For conveniencel infoperation, there are` preferably provided operating levers 108,
` pivoted .on the upper portion of the pedestal or supporting members and connected with arms 109, projecting from one side of the cam plates by links 110. As operating levers 108 are oscillated, cam plates are turned back and forth causing alternate opening and closin ofthe split sleeves.
eb tension controlling means are provided and in this embodiment comprise a brake 4mechanism operable on a spindle engaging one of the ends of the axial orifice of the rotatably mounted web roll. Preferably,
and as here shown, the brake mechanism is mounted on the` spindle which is not longitudinally movable with respect to the pedestal or support on which it is mounted. A brake drum 11,5,iixed to the outer end of spindle 28 on pedestal or support 24, is provided with a eep V-shaped peripheral groove, with which cooperate. corresponding arcuate brake shoes 117, of V-shapedl cross-section, pivotally mounted on brake arms 118, 119, which in turn are ivoted on shaft 120 outwardly exf tending rom the head of pedestal 24.

are yiel in ly pressed together, to obtain the desired bra e pressure for properly tensioning the web drawn olf the web roll, by means 'of rod 121, pivoted in the upper end of brake -27 are not spaced at a proper distance from each other, the hand levers 108 are moved to separate the split sleeves 94 'and permit the su porting members or pedestals 23 and 24 tolhe moved. These supporting members or `pedestals are then moved apart by'the operator and when' positioned at the vproper places, the hand levers 108 may be returned to their normal position to 'close the threaded sleeveson shaft and hold the supporting members a fixed distance apart. When these members have been properly adjusted, -the lonvitudinally movable spindle 27 is retracted by movement of the hand lever 43, and a new web roll is rolled onto the cradle where it is supported by shoes 65. The operator thencloses the switch for motor 74 to raise 27. After the web roll has been raised a suicient distance in this manner, the motor is stopped, thehand lever 43 moved to jam the spindle chuck 29 into the axial orifice of the web roll and move the web roll onto the chuck at the other end of the axial orifice. The operator then allows the cradle to descend by gravity, or may reverse the motor to lower it, vthereby completing the mountin of the web roll, on the supporting and andling mechanism and leaving it free to rotate. The leading end of the webrom the new web roll is then joined onto the tail end of the exhausted web roll and the web is fed into the printin press or other web-using mechanism. If t e web is not in register with the printing lates on the printing press cylinders or wit some correspondin part on the other web-using mechanism, the operator corrects this condition by turnin hand. wheel 98 to move the web roll-latera y of the path of the web or towards one end of the mechanism, the thread,- ed shaft 90 serving to keep the spindle sup- -porting members uniforml s aced whilev moving them, and to loc t e sup orts against further movement when the justment has been completed. The necessary tension on the web may then be established in the obvious manner, by the hand wheel 122 provided for varying the tension of the brake. While the several operations have been described in a particular order, it is apparent that most of them may be performed in an sequence and with the same eect as thong performed in the order recited.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the accompanying claims Without departin from the principles of the invention and without sacrlicing its chief advantages.
