This invention relates to car roofs of the type wherein the roof sheets form a continuous covering consisting of panels extending from side plate to side plate at one level, al-
l-ternating with panels at a different level. Usually, in roofs of this type, the roofsheets are secured together by rivets that extend inside of the car,`making the operation of riveting diilicult and permitting water to leak into the car in case the rivet holes are .not properly closed. The principal object of the present inventionis tol simplify the operation of riveting and to prevent water from entering the car through leaky rivet holes. Other Objects are simplicity and .cheapness ofconstruction and compactness of design. v
The invention consists principally insecuring together the sheets of a roof of ythe above type by rivets located entirely outside of the car. It also consists in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.`V

Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connection with a car-roof the type whereinthemetalroof sheets `flanges 3 that are riveted or otherwiseisel are adapted, arranged and rigidly secured together alon "their adjacent sidemargins to form a sel fsustaining, single-course roof consisting of alternating raisedand depressed panelsA and B, respectively, extending from side to Side lor the car. In thevc'onstruction illustrated, the roof Sheets are pitched lor arched and span the Space from'side plate 2 to side plate 2 and` have depending. eaves 60 cured to the verticalfaces of such side plates. The Side plates 2 are preferably of Substan-z tially Z-shaped Vcrosssection with the inner ange upstanding vand providedjat Iits top with a ilange2a that extends inwardly at an 65 angle; conforming to the pitch of the lowerpanels A and serves to support the endporitions of said panels.` K r Each roof sheet is offset along a longitudi- Y nal line, vpreferably near the medial line 70 thereof, so that` one-half of the body portion constitutes one of the upper panels A while the other half of said body'portion constitutes one of the panels B. Each sheet is provided along the side edge ofthe lower panel B with an upstanding sidemarginal seam flange 4 which is Abent inwardly at its top, as alteta, so as to overhang the adjacent margin of said lower'panel; and the other side of said sheet is providedwith a relatively shallow depending flange 5 thatextends along the outer'edge of the-upper panel A. The sheets are arranged on the car with the outer side marginal portion of theraised panel A of eachl sheet overlapping thelaterally bent inwardly extending upper portion 4@ of the upstanding seam flange 4 along the outer marginf'oithe` low'panel B of the'` next sheet; and the overlapping marginal portion of'said raised panel is Secured to the inturned upperportionAa of the upstanding flange 4; of theV depressed panel B bymeans of rivets-'5a. BythIs` ar#` rangement, sheets are secured together along their-adjacent margins by row'sof rivets that are located entirely outside of the car, Vwhere they' are readily accessible for driving; vand any water that gets into a leaky rivet hole will dripinto the lowpanel and will drain ends thereof youtside ofthe car.r
