This invention relates to journal boxes and more particularly to a lid pivotally mounted thereon and provided with resilient means j for holding said lid in open or closed position. V V
' The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is to provide a spring pressed lid for journal boxes, said lid being provided with an outstanding and upwardly extending hood forming hinging ears for the lid and housing a spring pressed lever which urges the lid tightly over the outeropening in the box, the construction providing for a large increase in Another object of my invention is to provide a journal box lid construction involving a cover portion with an integral outstanding hood providing hinging ears for pivotally mounting the lid to anassociate'd box, said hood serving to house an associated lever and resilient means, preferably in the'form of a pair of CO1]. springs, acting between said lever and hood to hold the lid in open or closed position, the lower end of said lever being pivoted preferably adjacent the central por-- tion of the lid, said central portion beneath said lever being inwardly embossed to facilitate assembly of the lever and spring with respect thereto.

Referring to the drawing in'detail, like parts being designated by like reference char-- asters, there is shown a portion of a journal box 1 formed with the usual outer opening 2 normally closed by the lid 8.. Disposed between thehood 11 and the cover 10 is the actuating lever 7 which is resiliently urged against the hinge lug 4 by resilient or spring means 14, the outer ends of which engage the inner surface of the hood 11 and the inner ends of which engage the outer surface of the lever 7. The lower end of the lever T is preferably pivoted between outstanding lugs 15 on the outer face of the cover portion 10, as by means of a rivet or other pivoting means 16 extending through the lower end "of the lever 7 orliinging; ears 17 thereon.
-In order to avoid the entrance of water and other foreign material into the box, the upper and side edges of the lid 3 are prefers ably formed with depending peripheral flanges 18, omitted only at. the lug 4:. The inner surface of the cover member is preferably formed with an oil drip flange 19 for obytiatingloss of oil from the. box. Between the hinge lugs on the lid, a depression or inner embossment 20 is provided which increases in width-above the lugs 15, as indioated'at 21, for receiving the lever 'Z'during 7 assembly of the springand'lever with re spect to the cover and hood, the depth of the depression preferably decreasing to. the upper edgecof the cover 10. For rig-idifying the cover, outstanding ribs or beading 22 are preferably provided on the nouterface 1 thereof.

A journal box lid including a cover, a hood and a lever, said hood being rigid and said lever pivoted with respect to said cover, and spring means disposed between said hood and lever to force said lever toward said cover, the outer face of said cover having an inwardly embossed portion and outstanding lugs on opposite sides of said embossed portion, said lugs receiving the means pivoting the lever to the cover and said embossed portion being adapted to receive the lever to facilitate assembly thereof with respect to the hood and cover.
5. In combination, a journal box having an outer opening and a hinge lug, a lid including a cover and a lever, means for pivoting said lever with respect to said cover, bearing means on opposite sides of said lever receiving said pivoting means, said lever comprising a web with flanges at the sides thereof, a spring seated on the web of said lever, said web at the spring-engaging portion being widened as compared with that portion of the lever between said bearing means, said flanges extending from said pivoting means toward said spring-receiving portion for rigidifying said lever and holding said spring in place, the end of said spring opposite to that engaging said lever being seated on an integral portion of said cover for urging one end of said lever toward the hinge lug to hold the lid open or closed over the outer opening of the box, and means pivotally connecting said lid to said box.
