OF KANTIAGO, CUBA PORTABLE BEE-SAW This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a portable see saw.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which construction, dependable in use and eflicient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes a base for resting on some surface, a pair of directly opposite arms pivotally mounted at their bottom ends thereof, reference on said base and extending at an inclination upwards and each including a transverse rung, a top arm pivotally connected at its ends to the top ends of said arms and com prising right and left sections pivotally connected with each other directly above said base, means for supporting the pivotal center of said top arm so that the sections are substantially horizontal, and a lever pivotally supported on each of thetop arm sections and engaging against said transverse rungs so that the levers may be alternately moved by persons sitting on the ends of the top arm to cause see sawing.

The portable see saw comprises a base 10 for resting on .some surface, a'pair of directly opposite arms 11 pivotally mounted at their rods 20 held s aced '15 attached bottom ends 12 on said base 10 and extending at an inclination upwards and each including a transverse rung 13, a top arm 14 pivotally connected at its ends to the top ends of said arms 11 and comprising right and left sections 15 and 16 respectively pivotally connected with each other directly above the base 10, means for supporting the pivotal center of said top arm 14 so that the sections are substantially horizontal, and a lever 17 pivotally supported on each of the top arm sections and engaging against said transverse rungs 13 so that the levers may be alternately moved by persons sitting on the ends of the top arm to cause see sawing.
The base 10 as shown on the drawing consists of a pair of spaced transverse bars 18 supporting a top pair of longitudinal bars 19.
e arms 11 each consists of a pair of side from each other by connectors 21. e said rung 13 is attached between the side bars 20. The pivotal mounting of the lower ends of the arms 11 is accomplished by bolts 22 enga ed through the lon tudinal bars 19 and t e lower ends of ti e side rods 20 forming the arms.
Each of the sections of the top arm 14 is formed from spaced top rods 23 held in spaced relations by connectors 24. A disc 25 upon each of the ends of the top arm 14 and constitutes a seat for persons see sawing. The pivotal connection of the arms 11 with the top arm 14 is accomplished by bolts 26. The pivotal connection between the sections 15 and 16 of the top arm 14 is accomplished by a disc 27 and bolts 28 passin through the side rods 23 of the top arm and throu h the disc. A transverse bar 29 is attache upon the top of the disc and has projecting ends so as to limit pivoting of the arm sections 15 and 16 to the horizontal. This is possible in that the bolts 28 are sli htl spaced inwards from the adjacent on s o the arm sections, and these ends abut against the transverse bar 29 when the top arm 14 is bowed upwards. When the top arm is bowed downwards, pivoting is possible without restrain.
The means for supporting the pivotal center of said top arm so that the sections are substantially horizontal, comprises a wire support 30 formed-from a wire which has a horizontal central portion 31 and bent ends 32- directed downwards. The bottoms of the ends 32 pivotally engage in the longitudinal bars 19. The top transverse central portion 31 of the wire support is adapted to engage between the adjacent ends of the top arm sections 15 and 16 directly below the disc 27 so as to prevent these arm sections from moving downwards.
The pivotal supporting of the lever 17 is accomplished by bolts 33 engaged intermediately through the lovers and supported on the side rods 23. The bottom ends of the levers 1? cross the rungs 13. Guides 34 mounted upon the levers 17 serve to hold the levers immediately adjacent the rungs. These guides are shown to consist of bent Wire pieces having a central portion and turned in ends so as to encircle the rungs.
In Fig. 5 a modified form of the device has been shown, in which a means is provided for latching the levers 17 and the rungs 13 together for holding the device fixed against see sawin This means comprises a flat spring 3o attached at one of its ends 37 upon the lever 17 and at its free end supporting a pin 38 passing through an aperture in the lever 17 and extending across the top of the transverse rung 13. To move the pin 38 into an inoperative position, it is merely necessary to bend the spring 36 to the position indicated by the dot and dash lines 39. In the operative pon'tion of the pin 38, the top end of the lever 17 may be moved towards the left for forcing the top arm 14 rearwards relative to the inclined arms 11 and cause one side of the see saw to go down. When the pin is in the operative position, this cannot be done in that the lever 17 cannot move relative to the transverse rung 13 the pin 38 engaging on one side of the rung and the wire guide 34 against the other side.
The device as shown in Fig. 1 is in an operative position. Persons may sit upon the disc seats 25 and alternately draw upon the levers 17 to cause see sawing. For example. if the left hand lever 17 is moved towards the left, the top arm 11 will be drawn towards the left so that the entire see saw pivots in that direction. The support 30 also bends towards the left, and the left seat 25 descends While the right seat '25 moves up 'ards. Then the person on the right hand side draws his lever 17 for see sawing the device in the opposite direction.
The see saw is also closeable so that it is readily; portable. To collapse it. it is necessary to slightly lift the sections 15 and 16 comprising the top arm so that the wire support 30 disengages from between the sections 15 and 16. Then the wire support may be moved to one side or the other and the disc 27 moveddownwards so as to move the sections 15 and 16 towards eachother. Fig. 2 shows the collapsed condition, in'which it will be noticed that theseats 25 touch ea 'h other and 1 disc 27 is located-at the bottom. As the sections of the top arm move closer to the side arms 11. the handle 17 will also move practically into a line with these parts so as not to protrude. This 1. :hown in Fig. In Fig. 1 the handle 17 is shown INOtIlKliIlQ as is necessary when the device is used.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constriu'tion lwrein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is 1. A portable. see saw, comprising a base for resting on some surface, a pair of dir ctly op posite arms pivotally mounted at their bot tom ends on said base and extending at an inclination upwards and each including a transverse rung, top arms pivotally conncct -l at their outer ends to the top ends of said in clined arms and pivotally connected with each other directly above said base. means for supporting the pivotal center of said top arms so that they are substantially horizontal, a lever pivotally supported on each of the top against the outer arms sections and engaging sides of said transverse rungs and having their top ends inclined toward each other so that the levers may be alternately moved by persons sitting on the outer ends of the top arms to cause see sawing. and means for latching the levers and rungs together for holding the device fixed against see sawing.

A portable see saw. comprising a base for resting on some surface. a pair of directly opposite arms pivotally mounted at their bottom ends on said base and extending at an inclination upwards and each including a transverse rung. top arms pivotally connected at their outer ends to the top ends of said inclined arms and pivotally connected with each other directly above said base, means for supporting the pivotal center of said top arms so that they are substantially horizontal, alever pivotally supported on each of the top arms and engaging against the outer sides of said transverse rungs and having their top ends inclined towards each other so that the levers may be alternately moved by persons sitting on the outer ends of the top arms to cause see sawing. and means for latch-- ing the levers and rungs together for holding the device fixed against see sawing. said lever being formed with apertures. said means comprising fiat springs mounted at one of their ends on the levers and at their other ends support-ing pins en aging through I 4 D I said apertures in the levers and extending across one of the sides of said transverse rungs, and guide elements being attached upon the levers and extending across the other sides of said rungs.
