My invention consists in a revolving bar or rod, provided with thumbnuts and pinions on both ends, in combination with corresponding longitudinal racks, secured to both sides of a frame of suitable dimensions, and operating in such a manner as to retain its parallel with the lines of the manuscript or paper placed in the frame for transcribing from, as the bar is being rotated downward at each successive line that is written or copied.

My invention further consists in the pivoted fingers, to hold the paper at the top and bottom of the yielding back; likewise the forks and rod or bar, at the top, to hold over back the sheets of the manuscript after they have been read or. copied.

, To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more in detail, re-

I ferring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon.

The frame A may be made very light and strong, of any suitable hardwood, of any required size, to accommodate the size of the sheets of the paper most used for writing documents on, and of sufficient depth to hold one i or more quires of legal cap paper, the top racks B, into which the pinions b, on the rotating rod or bar 0, fit, so that both ends of the rod or bar will keep parallel with the ends of the frame and the lines on the paper, when the rod is being rotated over it to obstruct a line or guide the eye to the right line to transcribe.

- The rotating rod 0 is provided with millededge buttons or thumb-nuts c c on each end, to operate it with, and the pinions b bare held in the racks B B, by small stiff wires or rods D D, which impinge against the pinions and rod 0, they being secured at both ends to the end pieces of the frame A, leaving the space between the rods and the sides of the frame sufficient for the rod 0 to rotate freely,

the upper ends of the wires D extending through the top piece of the frame sufficient to form one of the prongs of the forks dd, in which a rod, E, is placed, to hold any portion of the manuscript or paper turned back over the top out of the way.

The rod E is provided With milled-edge buttons 0 at both ends, for the convenience of handling.

The back F, on which the paper or manu script is placed to transcribe from, is held up to the rotating rod 0 by springs ff, at or underneath each of thefour corners, which will yield sufficiently to receive a quire or more of paper, and operates the same as when but a single sheet is used.

At the top and bottom of the yielding back F, near one edge, are pivoted slight springfingers G, which can be turned so as to rest on the top and bottom of the paper H, and hold it flat on the back F, if it is inclined to roll outward.

i The frame A, as above described, may be laid flat upon the table or desk for reading or copying from, if desired; but it is found,

generally, the most desirable to have it stand in an inclined position, as seen in the drawing, so that it is provided with a hinged frame, I, that jacks up under the back F,

the inclination of the frame being adjusted by a strap or tape, j, more or less, as may be desired.
