INDIANA LAMP CORPORATION, OF CONN ERSVILLE, INDIANA, A`V GOVREORATION LAMP STRUCTURE' Application flied March 14, 1930. serial No. 4am-122i This invention relates to a combination lamp provided withV an illuminated name pl'ate, designation.
The chief' object of this invention is. to
- provide a name plate construction in a comi' bination lamp which is so arranged that it isilluminable by the lamp bulb therein and forms the legend by reflection.
One feature of the invention consists in the interior or enclosed type of name plate or legend device.
Another lfeature of the invention consists in the embodiment of the invention in a. multiple compartment lamp wherein each lamp bulb therein is arranged to illuminate the legend device.
The full'` nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a central sectional view. of a combination stop and tail lamp in which the invention is embodied.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of a tail lamp. embodying the invention.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a so-called side or parking lamp.
In thev drawings, indicates a bowl type casing provided with a reinforcing back plate 11Y supporting any desired type of anchorage 1 2 Also supported thereby may be the license plate bracket 13. The plate 11 and casing are apertured and a plug receiving socket type construction 14 is supported thereby. EX-
bulb, receiving'socket 15 and extending downwardly and forwardly is a lamp bulb receiving-"socket 16. These sockets are supported by the stra-ps 17 and 18 secured tothe casing or` may be otherwise supported in the aforesaid relationship, to wit, in diverging relation in the upper and lower portions of the casing. A partition 19 may be provided if desired. The casing is apertured as at 2O to receive a clear glass closure 21 having the flange 22 for retaining the same in the casing. This permits the light rays from lamp bulb 24 mounted in socket 16, to illuminate a license 5 plate carried by` bracket 13. lA larger lamp bulb 23v isl receivable byvv socketv` 15 for' stop light purposes.
The rim 25' includes *ay peripheral angularly directed flange 26' which engages the inturned flange'2`7 upon the forward'- edgel of the casing; A forwardly directed peripheral flange 28 constitutes an eli-tensionl of thein# ward flange 27`andf the aforesaid constitutes a seat for the rear: portion of' they rim. The rniincludes any upper aperture 29, an intermediate aperture 30ianda lbweraperture 31, saidv apertures being defined by,` strapI por'- tions 32 and-33", which extend from one side of the rim tothe opposite side as illustrated in 2.
Mountedv inthe aperture 291is a stop light designating lens-:orclosure 34 which prefer ably is provided with a: ruby fieldl and' the letters are i'mpressed therein and are indicated at 35,.being preferably of amber color. The light bulb23i whenenergized, is adapted to illuminate the legending for warning purposes. The tail light aperture 31-' supports a lens or closure 35", whichyi's illuminated, as well as insert 21, when-thetail light bulb 24 is energized;
The intermediate aperture 30 is closed'by a clear glass orA lens which may be of theY plain or magnifying type, and the sameis indicated by the numeral 36'.. A lens'or closure retaining plate 37 having aJ peripheral flange.- 38 is adapted to bear against the forward end of the peripheral' flange-28; The plate isfapertured at its top portion as'at 39and anangle bracket or clip 40, carrying alocking pin 41, or the like,is` arranged toiseat in the socket 42, formedinA the flange 28 for locking the closure tothe rim and: it to the casing.v The clip 40'i`s suitably' secured. to the. rim. The closure retaining plate' 37i`s aperturedv at 43 and said ap'ertureisnl full registration with aperture 29. Similarly, the plate is aperturedv at its lower: portion as at4`4l and the aperture 44 is. in full registration with the stop light aperture 31'. The central intermediate aperture 45' isin full registration with the central intermediate aperture-30 in the door rim.
The casingrsupports'anut 46 and said nut is threadedrtore'ceive a locking' bolt 47, the
latter extending through the aperture 48 in the flange 28 of the casing. The opening through the door rim that receives said bolt is countersunk as at 49. Through the pin and socket connection 41-42 and the bolt and nut connection 47--48, the :door rim is detachably anchored to the casing. As shown clearly in Fig. 1 the exposed face of the glass lens or closure is preferably flat so they may be readily cleaned by wiping.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is illustrated a plate 50 which extends substantially across the casing and is provided with two forwardly projecting portions 51 at its upper and lower edges, which terminate immediately adjacent the plate 37 and bear upon said plate 37 by means of the outwardly directed anges 52. The opposite sides of this U- shaped container or chamber forming member are suitably apertured and provided with either a series of circular apertures or an equivalent single elongated aperture, as at 53. Suitably supported adjacent the back 40 is a name plate or legend forming member 54. This may be press fitted into the U- shaped member or may be otherwise secured thereto. Light from bulb 23 or 24 or both, passes through aperture 51 and a part at least is reflected onto the legend forming member 54 to illuminate the face thereof and these rays are then reflected through the clear glass closure 36 for indicating the desired legending, such as the name of the automobile or the like.
The U-shaped legend supporting member may be secured either to the plate 37 and carried thereby or may be secured to the partition 19 and carried thereby. Either method is available but the former is preferred because it permits of the formation of the U- shaped container integral with the retaining plate 37.
l In either event, whether the U-shaped plate legend retainer is formed integral with plate 37 or is suit-ably secured thereto by spotwelding or the like, the ends may be left open and in this way when the door is removed, the container is exposed so that the name plate may be readily removed for cleaning or in initial assembling, may be readily assembled. Of course if the cl-shaped plate is supported by the partition, the name plate when the door rim is removed, has its face exposedA and can of course, be readily cleaned in that manner as well as readily installed and removed. `The particular method of mounting the U- shaped name plate retainer may, therefore, be of either form and Whichever member, to wit, fplate 37 or partition 19, supports the same, the U-shaped retainer should be arranged to bear against the other, exceptin the case where the U-shaped retainer is secured to the plate and in turn supports the partition 19, so that the plate 37, the U-shaped retainer and the partition 19 in this latter event yare all removable as a unit, when the door rim is removed.
in Fig. 3 there is illustrated a combination stop and tail lamp wherein but a single multi-filament bulb is employed.
ln this form of the invention 110 indicates the casing having the rim receiving flange 127 which receives the rim 125 that mounts in an opening 131 the closure 135. The transverse portion 133 separates closure 135 from the closure 136. Positioned in spaced relation to closure 136 is the support 150, the face 154 of which includes suitable legend forming means, the same beingarranged to have illumination impinge thereon and be reflected thereon from the back of the closure 136 by passing through the open end 151 of the legend forming construction, illumination being obtainable from the light bulb 124 having multi-filaments and the axis of the light bulb being inclined to the axis of the conoidal casing 110. Casing 110 is provided with the opening 120vwhich receives the closure 121 whereby the bulb 124 is arranged to illuminate the license plate.
ln Fig. 4 the modilied formof the invention is illustrated and this form embodies a so-called side or cowl lamp construction or lamps of a similar character. 210 indicates the conoidal casing, 215 the light bulb socket inclined at an angle to the axis of the conoidal casing and mounting light bulb 223 which illuminates by direct illumination the portion of the closure 235 immediately in front of the same, said closure 235 being mounted in and upon the rim 225 supported upon the seat 22T of the casing. rThe closure is retained by suitable means 238.
Supported in spaced relation to the casing is the legend forming means including the inclined plate portion 250, through the opening 251 of which light from the bulb 223 at least partly engages the closure 235 and is reflected upon the legend forming face 254 to form the legend by reflection therefrom and `110 through the closure 235.
