Further objects and advantages will become apparent as the description of the in vention is hereinafter developed.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 shows a face view of the lock applied to the frame of a window, the lock being in its closed position; Fig. 2 is a side view of the lock with the locking arms extended before they are interlocked; Fig. 3 is a like view showing the locking arms in their locked position; Fig. at is a vertical sertional view of the lock. showing the arms in their interlocked position; Fig. is a dismembered view in perspective showing each member of the lock ready to be assembled, and Fig. 6 is a front view of the lock with the lower locking arm in released position.
My invention is adapted to be applied to window sashes that may be raised and lowered, and is adapted to be applied without mutilating the womlwork other than the three screws required to place the same in po ition thereon.
It is usually desired to have windows in the bedroom open atlcast five inches during the night, for the proper ventilation of the room. So that this may be done, and at the same time provide against trespassers, 1 desire to suitably place my lock on the lower part of the upper sash, which, as has been noted, will permitmovement of either or both sashes the limited space without any degree of danger that the lock may be tampered with from the outside.
\Vhile I desire to have only one on a. window. yet it may be found desirable to have two, but it is believed that one is all that will be found necessary for any window.
Referring to Fig. l the lock proper is placed over a metallic base 10, and upon the same I mount the member 11. The latter is provided with a large upper part, having a narrowed extending tongue 12, which is provided with curved parts 13 and 14, such parts acting as bails or hinges on which movable members swing. The enlarged upper part of said member is provided with a plurality of bores for screws to secure the same to the window sash. The lower tongue part thereof also has a perforation whereby a screw holds the parts not only together but against any force that may be applied to the lower sash against the lock.
An arm 15 having an opening 16 through which the tongue 12 extends is held under the curved recess 13, permitting the arm to he swung freely on the same. The member 15 on its opposite end is provided with a lifting lip 17, while the main body portion of the arm is cupped as at 18 so that when the lock is in its closed position it lies close to the body parts 01' the hinges l3 and 1%. Said arm is provided with an opening or aperture 19 in the cupped portion. The member 15 by reason of it being cupped forms depending edges about the outer edges of the same, which permits the said member to be raised sufliciently to allow the finger on the arm 20 to engage and be disengaged from the member 15 as shown.
A second arm 20, having an opening 2t through which the tongue 12 also extends, is adapted to swing freely in the curved member 14 of the tongue 12. This opening 21 permits the arm when in a closed position to house the end 12 of the tongue therein, permitting the parts to lie flat. against the base 10. The lower end narrowed as at 2'2 and is provided with a locking finger 23. that acts in a. two-fold capacity, first for lifting it up, when the same is to assume a locked position, and secondly when the finger 23 is inserted in the opening 19 it snaps therein and holds the parts as is shown in Fig. 4.
\Vhcn the movable members and 20 are applied under the member 11, it will be seen that they are free to move up and down at the will of the operator. Supposing the lock applied to the upper sash 2% at a predetct mined point from the bottom. Now if it is desired to lock the movable members 15 and 20 so that lower sash can be raised only so far. the member 15 is raised as shown in Fig. 3, then the second arm 20 is raised as shown in said figure and the finger :23 is shoved or snapped into the opening 19 which will hold it in such position.
Thus it will be noted by reference to Figs, 1} and 1 when this locking means is applied to the window sash 24, it will permit the lower sash to move only the extent that the lock is plac .d from the lower part of the upper sash. The lock will not permit the lower sash to be raised farther than the lock is placed on the upper sash. Obviously, the lower sash cannot be forced upward any further than the lock. and it it is forced it will only tend to bind that much harder. Again, it is impossible to pick the lock on account of the two movable members 15 and 20 being interlocked. To unlock the same the lower sash would have to be lowered to permit those members to be separated.
The lock as now constructed is designed for windows that move up and down, but the same may be applied to sliding doors and other such movable parts without changes.
While I have described the form of my invention as at present preferred and which I consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, yet I desire to have it understood that the illustration is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out in other ways than that shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In combination with a pair of window sashes. a base plate mounted on one of said sasl'ies, a member carried by said base plate and having a latch member and a cupped catch member hinged thereto, said catch member being disposed above said latch member, said lower or latch member having a finger thereon adapted to be pressed into said catch member, causing said members to become interlocked at an angle from said LOlVRY GARBE.
