Description

June 7, w B BE C JR CLEANER Filed Jan. 12, 1951 lllj Z ,5- ,Eeac/Z, Jr.-
' INVENTOR I BY 0 k wrrnsss: ATTORNEY Patented June 7, 1932 UNETED STATES- PATENT QFFICE. I
W. B. BEACH, JR., OF WIGHITA FALLS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO W. ALEXANDER, OF"v WIGHITA FALLS, TEXAS CLEANER This invention relates to improvements in cleaners adaptable for removing obstructions from drain pipes or removing any foreign matter that may accumulate in a drain pipe and has for the primary object, the pro- Yision of a device which may be easily and quickly applied to a drain pipe and connected to a faucet or valve of a water supply that the pressure of the water may be di' rected into the drain pipe for driving obstructions or foreign matter therefrom that may be interfering with the proper flow of fluids through the drain pipe.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means whereby the pressure of the water from a supply may be increased over its ordinary pressure when entering the drain pipe consequently assuring proper cleansing of the drain pipe with comparative ease and at a very low cost.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a cleaner of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efiicient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
\Vith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a sectional view illustrating a cleaner constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same applied to a drain pipe of a sink and connected to the faucet of a water supply.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the pump for increasing the water pressure and its means of attachment to the drain pipe.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a cylinder having the upper end closed by a removable cap 2 which is provided with a centrally arranged opening to slidably receive a tubular piston stem 3 carrying at its outer end a'suitable handle 4to permit a person to reciprocate the stem relative to the cylinder. "A suitable piston head 5 iscarried by the inner end of the stem 3 '55 and preferably in the form of an annular flange 6 formed integral with the stem 3 and carrying a removable washer 7 having frictional contact with the wall of the cylinder 1.
A substantially conical shaped head 8 is carried by the lower end of the cylinder 1 and is constructedfrom any suitable pliable material, preferably rubber, and is adapted to be inserted in the mouth of the drain pipe 9 as shown in Figure 1. The head 8 being of conical shape willlpermit the device to be applied to drain pipes of different sizes. A passage 10 extends through the head 8 for communication with the interior of the cylv inder 1 and is disposed in alinement with the tubular stem 3 that fluid discharged from the stem 3 may pass freely through the head into the drain pipe 9. V.
The head 8 has formed integral therewith a flange or sleeve 11 having tight frictional contact with the outer wall of the cylinder 1 and the latter is formed with an annular flange 12 fitting in a recess or annular groove 13 formed in the head 8 whereby the latter is firmly anchored to the cylinder.
A laterally extending nipple or coupling 14 is carried by the stem 3 adjacent the handle 4 and in communication with the interior of the stem and has connected thereto a flexible hose 15 carrying at the free end thereof a suit- 35 able nipple or coupling 16 adapted to receive the discharge end of a valve or faucet 17 employed for controlling the flow of water from the water system assocated with the sink or. basin. The nipple or coupling 16 is firmly secured onto the valve or faucet 17 by a removable chain 18 extending about the handle of the valve or faucet.
With the device applied as shown in Figure 1, a person holding the cylinder 1 downward ly to force the head 8 tightly into the drain pipe 9 turns the supply of water on by opening the valve 17 and the force of the water is directed into the drain pipe 9 to remove foreign matter that may have accumulated 9 for engagement with a drain pipe mounted therein. WVhen it is desired to increase the water pressure over that received from the water supply, the piston stem 13 is reciprocated by the person through the handle 4 which places the Water under an increased pressure as it is discharged from the device into the drain pipe thereby assuring the cleansing of the pipe of any obstructions. By reference to the drawing it will be seen that-the 'flowof'water through the device is continuous as long as the valve" 17 isopen and on the downward stroke of the piston 5 the water is placed under additional pressure.
WVhile I have elected to showmy invention applied to the drain basin or sink, the
- same may be convenientlyused on anydrain cpipe where a water supply 1s convenient.
" While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood" that minor changes in construc- "ItlOIl,"COIl1biI13.tlOIl and arrangement of parts maybe made without departing from the -sp irit and scope as claimed.
- Having thus described my invention,'what Iclaim is A'cleaner comprising a cylinder having one end i'flanged and its opposite end-threaded, an
1 'apertured cap a threaded to said threaded end of the cylinder, an apertured cushioned head on the flanged endof the cylinder, a hollow stem" reciprocally:mountedinthe cylinder and extending through the" apertured: 'cap with a tight sliding. fit therewithpahandle'on the outer end of the stem whereby the'latter may be'reciproc'ated'; means for connecting .thei stem La'djac'ent"thevhandle to a water supply, a flange on the :stem,'.and 'a' washer I 46 secured to the flange'andengaging the'walls 'of the cylinder to-provide-a'piston to the stem forforcing water into the: drain pipe' at a PIGSSHI'GID- excess of the pressure of the water from the source. -.-In' testimony whereof I affix-my slgnature.
