In order to hold the shaft D assembled with the housing of the brake mechanism, a retaining collar 3()V is provided on the ysha-ft D, said collar bearing on the inner side of the Wall 14 of the housing and being secured to the shaft D `by means of a pin 31 extending through said collar-and the shaft. As will be evident, in addition to holding the shaft D assembled with the housing, the collar 30 also limits the outward movement of the clutch member F, that is .movement thereof in a lefthand direction as viewed in Figure 2.
The ratchet or locking doggG which coopcrates with the ratchet teeth 37 ofthe clutch member F, is preferably in the form; of a substantially flat spring plate having an` upstanding tooth 32 thereon which engages withr the teethv of the member F. The plate por` tion of the member Gr is supported at'opposite ends on inwardly lprojecting lugs 33-33 provided on opposite side wall' portions ofthe housing, ther lugs 33 forming supporting shelves for said spring ratchet member G.
The operation of my improved hand brake mechanism in effecting tightening ofl the brakes is as follows: The hand wheel E, assuming thefparts to be in the position shown in Figures land 2, is rotated in. a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 1, thereby effecting rotation in a similar direction of the clutch member F, which at this time is in locking engagement with the teeth of the pinion C. As will be evident, due tothe action of the lefthand threaded connection between the shaft D and the clutch. member F, rotation of the hand wheel ini a clockwise direction tends to force the clutch member F to the right, as rviewed inA Figure 2, thereby causing the same to hug the enlarge-y ment or collar 25 of the shaft. The enlargement 25 preventing movement' in a righth'and direction vof the clutch member F. as-
viewed in Figure 2, the same is in effect locked to said shaft. Inasmuch as the pinion C is in engagement rwith the gear- B, the latter is rotated in a contra-clockwisey direction, there-y by effecting similar rotationy of the chain winding drum and winding of the chain 16 on the same, thereby tightening the brakes. As will be evident, during the tightening operation of the brakes backward or retrograde rotation of the chain winding drum is prevented by the locking means G which cooperates wth the ratchet teeth'of the member F. The arrangement of cooperatingteeth of' the member F and the ratchet member G permits rotation of the member YF' in a clockwise4 direction but prevents rotation thereof ina reverse direction. thereby preventing rotationV of the winding drum A -inr a clockwise direction. In ratcheting overthe member 32, the plate member of the ratchet element is bowed downwardly, as viewed in Figure 3.
Inreleasing the bra'lie mechanism, the `hand wheel E is rotated in a contra-clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure l.` inasmuch as the locking member G holds the clutch meniber F against rotation in a contra-clockwise direction, the member F will be fed oiitirard-y ly on the shaft D by meang f the SG1-QW threads 26. As will be evident, the teeth 29of the member F will thus be disengaged fro-m the teeth yof the pinion C, therebyreleasing the latter and permitting free running'fof the chain winding drinn to allow unwinding -of the chain therefrom kandrelease of the brakes. Outward movement of the member F 4eratory to rotate the hand wheel in a righthand direction.` |This operation of the hand wheel ',will effect reengagement of the driving clutch members and further rotation of the handwheel'will then effect tightening of the brake chain. TWhen the hand wheel E is rotated in a clockwise direction, the cooperate ing screw threaded connection between the shaft D andthe member F will cause the lat-r ter to be moved tothe lright on the shaft D to :ce-engage the teeth 29 thereof with the teeth of the` pinion C. Assuming'y that l the teeth 29 ofthe member Fdo not exactly register with the openings between Vthe teeth of the pinion-C, when the ymember F is brought into abutting relationwith the end of the pinion, registration of the teetli29 with the openings between the teeth of rthe pinion C will be effected by rotation of the member F with the shaft D. In this connection, it is pointed out that the memberF shaft' D through the friction of the' sciew threaded connection therewith, the member F being free to ratchet kover the tooth ofk the. locking member G, whenv the same is rotated4 in a clockwise direction. As soon'asthe teeth ltheteeth of the pinion C, the action of the screw threaded connection between the shaft D and the member F will force the teeth 29 into. the openings between the teeth yof the pinion, thereby clutching the shaft D to the pinion C and causing the latter to be rotated in unison therewith, thereby driving the gear B ingthe manner heieinbefore described and effecting tightening of the brake chain on the winding drum A. v
