It is well known to those familiar with this art that some difiiculty and awkwardness is occasionally experienced in the manipulation of die sets of the usual sort such as those of the type described and claimed in United States Letters Patent 1,7 57 ,309, dated May 6, 1930, and in my copending application, Serial Number 309,085, iiled September 28, 1928. In the ordinary manipulation of such die sets, the cooperating punch and die holders are aligned with each other by means of leader pins, or the like, and one of the members is then struck with a hammer or other tool so as to form` the work in accordance with the dies. After this operation, the punch and die holders must be separated and this is frequently a dificult operation inasmuchas they are very likely to stick together. In accordance with the usual practice, the workman strikes the members sharp blows with a hammer or other tool, the blows being applied in various directions, frequently with the result that the cooperating members become more jammed than they originally were and sometimes the leader pins are bent and the die set permanently injured.
An object of my invention, therefore, is to provide a-device for accurately bringing the cooperating die and punch holder of a set into registry with each other with suiiicient force to form the work in accordance with the dies, and which is also adapted to separate the cooperating members with a minimum of eifort on the part of the operator both operations being performed with no danger of injury to either the work or to the members of the die set.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and com? bination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, my improved device indicated generally at 10 is shown as applied to a punch and die set indicated generally at 12 which comprises a punch holder 13 having a shank or stem 13 and a die shoe 14 to which are secured, by means of screws 15, a punch 16 and a die 17, respectively. Secured to the die shoe` 14 are leader pins 18 which slidably engage openings 19 in the punch holder 13 for properly aligning it. The numeral 21 indicates a piece of work which it is desired toy form in a particular shape in. accordance with the particular punch and die secured to the punch holder and die shoe, respectively.
`The device 10, embodying my invention, comprises a channel member 30 having a pair of oppositely disposedv grooves 31 therein.` Preferably integral with the channel member is a foot portion 33. Strengthening webs 34 and 34 may be provided for secur-v ing the foot 33. Slidable in the channel memberis a member 35 having tenons 36 slid'- ably engaging the grooves 31 of Vthe channel member. Secured to the member 35 as by screws 36 or the like, is a plate 37 having integral therewith a jaw 38 having a lower face 38 parallel to and adapted to cooperate with the foot 33 of the channel member 30. Formed on the jaw 38 is a marginal rib 39 adapted to engage a groove 39 formed on the lower face of the punch holder 13. The surface of the rib 39 is preferably lnurled, as shown in Fig. 3 and may be hardened as by chilling. lf desired, the rib 39 may be omitted and the upper surface of the jaw 38 knurled to obtain a secure grip von the punch holder. Furthermore, the lower surface of the foot 33 may be knurledV if desired, to improve its grip on the die shoe and also hardened by chilling or other suitable means. A sleeve 40 is formed on the channel member 30 and rotatably mounted therein is a shaft 41 having secured to one end thereof, as by means of a screw 42, a crank 43 having a suitable handle 44. Attached to the other end of the shaft 41 is a pinion 45 which engages a rack 47 secured as by means of screws 48 to the member 35. f
An adjustable legO is'prefe'rably provided for the device. This leg may have a foot 51 for engaging a flat surface and has a longitudinal slot 52. The legis adjustably secured to the member 30 by means of a double headed bolt `53 'and a screw 54 passing through apertures in the member 30 and the slot 52, a wing nut 55 being threaded on the screw 54 for clamping the leg in adjusted positions.
Tn the operation of the device embodying my invention, the punch holder and die shoe with the Vpunch and die mounted thereon are brought into alignment by means of the leader pins 18 and the work 21 is arranged between the cooperating punch and die. After the cooperating members have been vbrought into registry, in accordance with my invention, Iapply the device 10 to the punch and die holder in theV manner shown in Fig. 5 with the footl 33 of the channel member 30 engaging the lower surface of the die shoe 14 and with the jaw 38 of the member 35 engaging the upper surface of the punch holder' 13. The crank 43 isV then rotated by means of the handle 44 so as tol move the vmember 35 and jawV 38 carried thereby toward thefoot 33.
Assuming, then, that the work 21 has been formed yin accordance with the punch and die, it is ldesired now to separate the members. The device 10 is then brought into Vengagement with the members in the position shown in Fig. 2 with the foot 33resting upon the die shoe 14 and with the jaw 38 engaging the undersurface of the punch holder 13 the rib 39 engaging in lthe groove 39 of the punch holder 13, and the foot 51 rests `upon the top'surface of a Work bench or other` support so as to prevent lateral movement of the device away from the die set. The crank 43 is then rotated in the proper direction by means of the handle 44 so as to move the member 35 away from the foot 33. Tt will be understood, of course, that the pinion 45, inasmuch as it engages the rack 47 secured to the member 35, will cause the member to slide within the channel member 30 and hence the jaw 38 is moved toward or away from the foot 33 in accordan'cewith the direction of rotation of the crank 43.
It will thus be seen that the jaw 38 by engaging; the punch holder 13 will separate it from the die shoe 14 with a very small expenditurey of effort on the part of the operator. Y
Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, there is Ashown here an arrangement whereby the force applied by a manipulator of a device embodying my inventionmay be multiplied, so that the device may be of very high mechanical efficiency. The numeral represents a cranli shaft corresponding to the shaft 41`of the other embodiment. This shaft carries a gear 61 meshing with alarger gear 62 on a shaft 63. As shown best in Fig.f12,the leg member 83 is channel or U-shaped in cross section, the
edges of the channel being slidable in grooves 85 formed in the ratchet member 81. A pair of oppositely disposed ears 87 are formed on the leg member 83 adjacent the upper portion thereof, these ears being bored to rotatably seat a pin 88. This pin is slidable against the wall of the ratchet member 81 opposite the teeth thereof and a leaf spring 89 suitably secured to the leg member 83 bears against the teeth of the ratchet member 81 so as normally7 to retain the sharpened end 84- of the leg member in operative engagement with the teeth.
It will be readily apparent that the leg member 88 may be adjusted longitudinally of the channel member merely by rocking the leg about the pin 88 as an axis, sliding the leg up or down to the desired position and again bringing the sharpened end 84 of the le(Y into operative engagement with one of the teeth of the ratchet. The teeth of the ratchet 81 are so formed so as to have substantially horizontal faces on the lower portions thereof and downwardly sloping faces on the upper portion thereof, so that the leg may be adjusted downwardly by merely sliding it along the sloping upper faces of the teeth.
Cooperating' with the channel member 7 5 is a member 91 having preferably formed intecfrally therewith a jaw portion 92. This jaw has preferably formed thereon a marginal rib 93 which is preferably hardened by chilling or by other suitable means and may be ground so as to obtain a firm seat in a groove formed on the punch holder. Secured to the member 91 by means of screws 94, or`
other suitable means, is a longitudinal plate 95 which is slidable in a groove 95 formed in the channel member 75. Also secured to the member 91 by screws 96 or the like is a plate 96 which is slidably engageable in a groove 97 formed in the channel member 75 opposite the groove 95. The plate 96 is preferably formed of cold rolled steel and has a plurality of rack teeth 97 formed along the edge thereof opposite to the edge which is slidable in the groove 97.
Formed on the channel member 75 and preferably integral therewith is a cylindrical boss 98 journalling a shaft 99 which carries a pinion 100. This pinion operatively engages the teeth on the plate 96 so as to move the portion 92 relative to the foot 76, as in the embodiment described above. The pinion 10()V is controlled by means of a crank 102 secured to the shaft 99 and a handle 103 carried by the crank.
The operation of the device just described is substantially similar to that of the other embodiments and will be perfectly clear without further explanation. In this embodiment, however, some economies and advantages are present over the other embodiments. Thus, the plate 96 carrying the rack teeth, which is desired to be stronger and more stationary member,
wear 'resisting than. the other. parts associ` ated with the member 91,' can be formed separately of cold rolled steel or otherhard material and attached to the member 91, and may bejreadily replaced; the plate 95,y which is also replaceable may be similarly formed from hard material :if so desired kin viewof its `bea-ring engagement with the groove` 95. Hence, the member 91 may be cast, thus reffecting a considerable saving. If desired, a. considerable saving of `metal and reduction of weight can be effected by providing open spaces in thevmember 91 such as are indicated at 105 in Fig'. 10. j
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made'in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence it is understood that I am not limiting myself to the exact form, construction or combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned. f
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device for assembling and dismantling die sets, the combination of a relatively a movable member mounted thereon, laterally extending elongated portionsl formed on the respective members and having oppositely disposed faces in parallel relation with respect to each other, said portions being adapted to engage adjacent faces of a die set, and means for moving said members relatively with respect to each other while maintaining parallel relationship of said faces.
2. In a device for assembling anddismantling die sets, the combination of a relatively stationary member, a movable member mounted thereon, laterally extending elongated portions formed on the respective members and positioned in a common vertical plane, said portions having oppositely disposed faces in parallel relation with respect to each other and adapted to engage adjacent faces of relatively movable portions of a die set, means for moving said members relatively to each other, and cooperable means formed on the respective membersfor maintaining the parallel relationship of said faces during such movement.
3. In a device for assembling and dismantling die sets, the combination of a relatively stationary member,
gated die set engaging portions formed on the respective members and positioned in a common plane, said portions having oppo# sitely disposed faces in parallel relation with respect to each other and adapted to engage adjacent faces of a die set, meansincluding a rack and pinion mounted on the respective members for moving the members relatively to each other, and cooperable means including a groove and tenon connection formed on a movable memberr mounted thereon, laterally extending elon--V the yrespective Vmembers for vmaintaining the parallel relationship of "said faces during Such movement.
