FRANK SMITH BLUE, OF CARTHAGE, NRTH CAROLINA i f COMBINED BULLETIN AND BLAcxBonnnv i Application iiie'arfiugustr e, 1930. serial No. 474,214..`
This invention relates to" the bulletin and black board which constitutes the subject matter of my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,727,- 332, granted September 10, 1929, and which comprises a support in the form Vof a stand adapted to be mounted upon a desk, counter', floor or the like, and a plurality of panels adapted Vto be written upon by chalk or the like and swingingly connected together and to the support to permit each side of each panel to be squarely presented to the'A observ-kv ers. Y
The present invention has for oneof its objects to mount the panels on a hanger or bracket which shall be adapted toV be secured to a wall or wall black board or to a wall be-v tween two black boards, to the end that the bulletin and black board may be used to the best advantage in a class room or the like.
The present invention has for a further object to swingingly connect the panels to the hanger orbracket in a manner to permit them to be moved easily and without noise.
rIhe present invention has for a stillfurther object lto provide means through the medium of which the panel being written upon may be held against swinging movement.
YWith the foregoing and other `objects in view, the nature of which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending horizontally and centrally through the bulletin and black board;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending vertically and centrally through the bulletin and black board;
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation of the hanger or bracket of the bulletin and black board;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the means by which one of the panels of the bulletin and black board may be supported against rearward movement, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure 4f.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 designates the panels and 2 the hangeror brack-l et of the bulletin and black board. The panels 1 may be of rectangularor ,anyfotherdesired formation in elevation, and ,may [.be Y made f any material having a surface adapt- 55 ed to beewritten upon by chalk or ythe like. rlrhe panels 1 are mounted in frames Swhich are `of the open formationgto expose bothvsurfaces of each panel and thus permitboth surfaces to be written upon. The hanger orV 60 bracket 2 is of all metal construction and'com` prises a vertical bar 5 and horizontal arms 62 rhe arms 6 are provided with attaching mem-A bers 7 which are formed 4integrally therewith and arranged at right angles thereto and 65 which are securedto the bar 5 by rivets 8. Y
The attaching member 7 of the upperarm 6 extends upwardly therefrom and theattaching element of the lower arm 6 extends down- 1 wardly therefrom. lThe bar 5, arm 6 and at- 70 taching members arersimilar as to' width, andthe attachingvmembe'rs lie in full abutting contact with the bar. The bar 5'is prolv vided between the arms 6 with `openings 9, andthe attaching members 7 and the-bar are 7'5 provided with openingslO, for the reception of elements 11 for securing the hanger or bracket to a wall 12. f
The bu'lletinandy blackboard may comprise i one or more unitsof the panels 1, each unit 80 consisting of two panels. The panels of each unit are connected together by hinges 13, and 011e of the panels'of oneunitis connected to al panel vof the other unit by hingesflli, The
panels` are yarranged between the arms y6 and 85 i are swingingly connected thereto-by the pine tles 15 of the hinges-14. The pintles 15 pass throughopenings l16 inthe arms 6,1 and the openingv of theupper' arm located nearerfthe bar -than the opening'ofl the lower armsoas to support the panelsfl in an upwardly and forwardly inclined position. TheY panels Y'l are connected togetherl and to the hanger l1 for individual swinging movement aboutfp- 95 wardly and `forwardly inclined axes. v They may be arranged with one extendingy tothe right and the others extending tothe left from the hanger vor bracket or they .may be 4arranged with'one extending tothe left and 100 one'of them' projects to the right from the the others extending to the right from the hanger or bracket.
In order topermit the panels 1 to be moved easily and without noise, they are supported upon the arms 6 by anti-friction bearings 17, each consisting of upper and lower discs r retainers '18 and 18a, respectively, and balls 19 between the retainers. The retainers 18a each unit.
rest upon the upper surfaces of the arms 6, and these and the retainers 18 are provided with openingsV 2O for the reception of the hinge pintles 15. The lower hinge 14 has a barrel extension 21 whichrests upon the lower bearing disc 18, and 4a nut 22 secured to vthe upper end of the pintle 15 ofthe upper hinge lltrests upon theV upper bearing disc 18. 'Asthey are supported by the bearings 17,;the panels 1 may be moved with comparatively" littlefor no effort.
WVhen'the panels 1 are so arranged that only i 25 "adapted to be engaged with a keeper 26 xed'to' the-wall 12 to the right ofthe hanger Vor'bracket 2. When the latch bolt 23-i's-in engagementwith the keeper 26,`itfholds the panelV 1 with which it is associatedagain'st movement in the direction of the'wall 12, and
in'rview thereof, Asuch panel is held against movement and may thus be easily written upon.
` Thekeeper 26 is provided at'its upper l' end 'witha 'hook 27 with which the latch hook-'25 engages, and these hooks larecurved on the arc of a circle having the pintle 6 for its center, Vso that the latchV hook will move automatically yout of 'engagement with the Y keeper'hook when the pintle is swung to the left. kThe keeper 26 functions merely to sup- Y port the latch bolt 23 engaged therewith so that the latch bolt may in turn hold the panel with which it is associated against forward movement. vWhen neither is'engaged with the keeper 26, the latch bolts 23 extend downwardly from theirpivots 24.
- If desired, one panel frame 3-of each unit may. be` provided with aLbeveled vertical i edge 28, as shown in Figure 1, in order to permit that panel extending to the right from the hanger 'or bracket 2 to be swung against the wall 12 so that it will vbe held against movement when being written upon. When ay panel frame of each of the units is provided with a beveled edge, the latch bolts23 and thekeeper 26 will not be employed. f
From the foregoing description, taken 'in signature.
ings, it should be apparentv that' the hanger or bracket 2 permits the panels 1 to be firmly secured to a wall at such height that all within the class room or the like may clearly see the matter written upon the panels. The panels 1 may be moved consecutively to present their surfacesV to the observers.Y W
The hanger or bracket 2 permits'the panels 1 to be'secured toY a wall 'blackboard' or to a Wall between two black boards, and each provides a private black vboard-for the teachers use. As the panels l are-connected to the hanger or'bracket V2 for swinging movement about inclined axes, those panels that are arranged'"onein'4 advance of the other will not move accidently from such position. The panelsare valuable for lectures, outline work and the like.V Y Y While I have described the principle of the invention together ywith the structure which I now consider the preferred embodiment thereof it is to be understood that, the structure shown is merely illustrative and. that such changes may be made,fwhen desired, as
fall within the scope of the'U invention as claimed.
' I claim A device of the character set forth com- Y prisinga bracket adapted to be secured to a wall, panels pivoted to the bracket, a keeper provided with a curved hook and adapted toY be secured to the wall at one side of the bracket with its hook arranged in the arc of a circle having the pivot of the panels for its center, and a latch bolt connected at one'of its ends to one of the panels for swinging movement about a pivot right angularly 'related' to the pivot of the panel, the latch bolt'being adapted to rest at its free end upon the keeper hook andprovided at said'end thereof with a down turn hookadapted to engage` the keeper hook` and be moved out of engagement therewith when the panel'carrying the'latch bolt is swung in one direction. n Q In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix FRANK S'MTH BLUE. j
