This invention relates to a functionally and structurally improved writing implement.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character and specifically a pen or pencil of the pocket type and by means of cle (and especially a pocket implement)v whichcomprises a plurality of parts and in which accidental detachment of the parts is to be avoided. \1
Another object is that of furnishin an article of this character,-the parts of w ich will be relatively few in number and individually simple and rugged in constructlon, these parts being capable of manufacture largely by automatic machinery and assembled by unskilled labor to furnish a relatlve ly inexpensive implement which will operate over long periods of time with freedom from 39 difiiculties. 1
With these and other ob'ects in mind, reference is had to the attache invention and in which:

In these several views, the invention has F been shown in association with av fountain pen. As before brought out, it might, howsheet of drawin s illustrating one practical embodiment of t e ever, be advantageously utilized in connection with other implements.
Thus, in referring to'the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates .a cap of ordinary construction which is to be associated with a bar- 7 rel 11 preferably by means of interconnectingscrew threads 12. In the usual manner, a-clip 13 is attached to the cap in order that in cooperation with the exterior of a garment, it may serve to prevent an accidental dropping 00 of the implement from the pocket of the user. I It is intended by means of the present invention to also prevent an accidental detachment of the barrel from the cap, and, with this in mind, the screw threads are interrupted by a groove or grooves 14 which are of a width suchthat they may receive a lockmg bolt or'spring member 15. This member as llustrated may be in the nature of a fiat spring one end of which is ri "dly secured 7 tothe cap and the bodyof wi ich may lie within one of the grooves 14. Normally, however, and as shown in Fig. 2, the strip will then lie snugly against the inner: face of the cap and within the recess 16 provided for thls purpose. v
When extending into the groove it is'obvious that a turning of the cap with respect to the barrel may not. occur. Accordingly, a
. detachmentof the parts may not be efl'ected.
However, with the spring member 15 in the osition shown in Fig. 2,.this turning'may e accomplished as a consequence of which he partsmay'be detached. Fig. 1 is a partly sectional side elevation of The projection of the spring member and the retraction thereof is preferably effected automatically. With a view to achieving. this result, it is preferred that the end of the clip 13 be-recessed or'hollow and that the cap have an opening through which a pin l7 applied tothe member 15 may project. This pin extends into the recess or opening of the clip-ball or hearing member and consequently if a 'layer' of material is interposed between the outer ends of the clip andpin' the spring member 15-will be pro fiected as'in -Fig. 1 to lie within the groove 14. However, if this layer isremoved, the parts spring to theposition shown in Fig. 2-permitting of the detachment of the cap from the barrel.
As a consequence of this construction, it will be appreciated that'the par ts lock against relative movements as soon as the implement is mounted within the pocket with the clip thereof bearing against the outer face of the garment. The parts are immediately resiliency. With a view to avoiding difliculties in this connection, the structure shown in Fig. 4 may be resorted to. In this view, it will. be noted-that grooves 18 have been illustrated, the inner walls of which are inclined. While in no way affecting the locking of the parts against accidental detachment, the shape of these grooves permits-in the event of the spring member jammingof the operator simply tightening the cap to a small extent. Thereupon, the spring member 15 will ride against'the inclined wall of one of the grooves and be forced outwardly. Consequently, the operator after slightly tightening the parts, may completely dis-.
, mount the cap from-the barrel.
In certain instances, it may be desired to not have the spring member and clip in such positions upon the cap that direct contact exists between the clip and the pin. This structure has been" shown in Fig. 5 in which the parts have been identified by the same reference numerals and in which the pin is disposed in sufficiently close proximity to the clip that the garment material will bear against the pin to assure of a projection of the spring member into the groove.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that, among others, the several objects of the invention as specifically afore identified are achieved. Obviously, numerous changes in construction and rearrangements of the parts might be resorted to without departingfrom the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An implement including snap, a barrel, both said cap and barrel being. formed with screw threads whereby the same may be coupled, said barrel being formed with a longitudinal groove, a'spring member proectable from said cap into said groove to prevent relative movements of said cap and barrel, and a pin secured to said member extending beyond said cap andmeans extending adjacent said pin to shift the same and said member inwardly upon an element being interposed between said means and pin.

An implement including a cap, a barrel, both said cap and barrel being formed with screw threads whereby the same may be coupled, said barrel beingqformed with a longi tudinal groove, a spring member extending from said cap and projectable into said groove to prevent relative movements of said cap and barrel, a pin secured to said member and extending beyond said cap, and a clip member extending to a point beyond that at which said pin projects from said cap whereby an element interposed between said pm projection of said pin and spring member. p
5. An implement including a cap, a barrel, both said cap and barrel being formed with screw threads whereby the same may be cou pled, saidbarrel being formed with a longitud nal groove, a spring member extending from said cap and projectable into sa d groove to prevent relative movements of said cap and barrel, said groove being formed with an inclined side-wall whereby pro ection of said member may be efiected upon turning said cap with respect to said barrel.
6. An implement includinga barrel and cap therefor, said barrel member belng formed with a recess, a locking element carried by said cap member and projectable into said recess to prevent relative turning and consequent uncoupling of said members and a clip carried by said cap member and cooperable with said locking element upon a support beinginterposed between said clip and cap memberto project said locking'elementinto said recess. An implement including a barrel and cap therefor, both formed with mutually co-- operative screw threads,'recesses in both said cap and barrel members and interrupting the screw threads thereof, a locking element posi- 1 tioned within the recess of said cap member and projectable into the recess of said barrel member to preveilt relative turning and consequent uncoupling of said members and a clip carried by saidcap member and extending adjacent said element whereby a support interposed between said element anddlip will project said element into said barrel recess.
9. An implement including a barrel, a ca therefor, a locking element carried by said cap, said barrel being formed with a recess into which said element is projectable to pre vent relative movements of said members, a pin extending from said element and beyond said cap and whereby said element may be projected, and a clip member overlying said 5 pin and formed'with a recess accommodating the same, with said locking element in retracted condition, whereby upon a support being interposedbetween said clip and pin the latter will be projected to correspondingly project said locking element into locking relationship with said barrel member;
- 10. An implement including a barrel and cap, said barrel being formed with a recess, a locking element extending wholly upon the 'inner face of said cap and projectable into said recess to prevent relative movements of said cap and barrel, and actuating means connected to said element and extending through and beyond said cap whereby said 5) locking element may be actuated.
