My invention relates to improvements in containers or tubes for tooth-paste, shaving cream orthe like, and more particularly to the closure or cap therefor.
An important object of my invention is to' provide a tube or container of this character having acap or closure which may be readily removed and replaced on the discharge end of the tube.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a cap for a tube of this character which cannot become separated from the tube.
A further object of my invention is to provide a closure construction which is simple in construction and operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and strong and durable in use.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

metal which maybe collapsed or squeezed to discharge the contents through the openin 12. The usual tube of this type is provided with a cap which is attached by screw threads to the discharge neck. Such a cap not only requires a threading manipulation but is subject to being misplaced and lost.
In order to obviate these difliculties I provide a cap member 13 provided with an opening 14 extending a substantial distance towards its top and adapted to snugly receive the discharge neck 11 of the tube. No screw threads are provided on the discharge neck 11 or within the opening 14 in the cap. The cap 13 is provided with a pair of longitudinal bores or openings 15 arranged adjacent the periphery of the cap at diametrically opposite points. A bail or spring wire loop 16 has its free ends bent over to form inwardly proj ecting studs 17 which fit within suitable depressions or recesses arranged adjacent the lower end of the discharge neck at diametrically opposite points. The side arms of the bail 16 extend through the openings 15 in the cap and are crimped adjacent their centers to form outwardly bulging shoulders 18. Below the shoulders 18 the arms of the bail converge inwardly, and above the shoulders 18 the arms of the bail also converge inwardly, the upper portion of the bail being of greater width than the portion of the bail arranged below the shoulders 18.
When the cap is in its closed position on the discharge neck of the tube'the bail is held in an upright position by reason of being arranged with its arms extending through the guide openings in the cap. The shoulders 18 are arranged immediately above the top of the cap, which they engage and hold firmly in position on the discharge neck because of the resiliency of the bail arms which forces the arms outwardly. When it is desired to uncover the discharge opening 12, the cap 13 is pushed upwardly past the shoulders 18 to the position shown in Figures 4 and 5. The shoulders and adjacent portions of the bail arms are pressed inwardly by the guide openings 15 which are preferably of substantiall greater diameter than the wire from whic the bail is formed. When the cap is in this raised position the cap and bail may be swung away from the discharge opening of thetube, and the contents of the tube dispensed. When the cap is to be closed, it is moved from the position shown in Figures 6 and 8 to the position shown in Figures 4 and 5 and then pressed'downwardly over the end of the discharge neck where it is held firmly in position. When in this position the upper end of the bail 16 may be used as a loop to suspend the tube, as by passing the upper end of the bail over a nail, hook, or the like.
Due to the absence of screw threads the operation of the cap is very simple. The tube may be held in the palm of the hand and the cap grasped by the thumb and index finger of the hand holdinr the tube and moved upwardly and away rom the discharge opening. It will be seen then that the cap may be operated by the use of but one hand, and that the cap cannot be lost or misplaced due to the pivoted bail. The shoulders 18 firmly hold the cap in position and prevent the escape of the contents of the tube.
While I have shown and described the preterred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes i the size, shape, resorted to without depart-ing'from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a tube having a discharge neck, of a closure comprising a cap having a greater diameter than the neck of the tube, said cap having guide recesses therein, a bail having arms extending through said recesses in the cap and secured to the neck of the tube, the arms of the bail being provided with resilient projections adapted to engage the top of the cap when in its closed position, said cap being adapted to be moved pagt said projections to clear the neck of the tu e.
2. The combination with a containing tube having a discharge neck, of a closure comprising a cap having a greater diameter than the neck of the tube, said cap having a longitudinal guide opening therein, a guide member pivoted to the neck of said tube at a point spaced from the top thereof, said guide member extending through the opening in the cap and a substantial distance thereabove, means to prevent the removal of the cap from the guide member, and a resilient projection on said guide member intermediate of its ends and adapted to engage the cap in the closed position thereof, said ca being adapted to be moved past said pro ection to clear the neck of the tube.
3. The combination with a containing tube having a dischar e neck, ofa closure comprising a cap having a greater diameter than and arrangement of parts may be the neck of the tube, said cap having a recess therein adapted to receive the neck of the tube, said cap being provided with a pair of guide openings arranged at substantially diametrically opposite points adjacent the periphery thereof, a spring wire bail having arms extending through the openings in the cap and pivotally secured to the neck of the tube at a point spaced from the top thereof, said b'ail being widest at a point intermediate of its ends, the widest portion of the bail being arranged above the cap when the cap is in its closed position.
4. The combination with a tube having a discharge neck of a closure comprising a cap having a greater diameter than the neck of the tube, said cap having a recess therein adapted to receive the neck of the tube, and said cap having a pair of longitudinal guide openings therein arranged at substantially diametrically opposite points adj acent the periphery thereof, a spring wire bail having arms extending through the openings in the cap and pivotally secured to the neck of the tube, the arms of said bail being crimped intermediate of their ends to form pro ecting shoulders adapted to engage the top of the cap in the closed position of the cap.
5. The combination with a tube having a discharge neck, of a closure comprising a cap having a pair of longitudinally extending guide openings therein arranged at substantially diametrically opposite points, a spring wire bail having arms extending through the openings in the cap and pivotally secured to the neck of thetube, the arms of said bail be ing crimped intermediate of their ends to form pro ecting shoulders adapted to engage the cap in the closed position thereof.
6. The combination with a containing tube, of a closure comprising a cap having a pair of longitudinally extending ide openings arranged at substantially diametrically opposite points, a spring wire bail having arms extending through the openings in the cap and pivotally secured to the tube, the arms of said bail being crimped intermediate their ends to form projecting shoulders adapted to engage the cap in the closed position thereof said arms converging downwardly below said shoulders and converging upwardly above said shoulders,
7. The combination with a tube having a discharge neck, of a closure comprising a cap having a recess therein to receive the neck of the tube, said cap having longitudinally extending openings arranged therein at substantially diametrically opposite points, a spring wire bail having arms extending through the o enin in the cap and turned in at their en s to orm studs which fit into sockets in the tube neck, the openings in the cap being of substantially greater diameter than the diameter of the bail arms, the arms of said bail being-crimped intermediate their ends to form projecting shoulders adapted to engage the top of the cap in the closed position thereof, said arms' converging downwardly below said'shoulders and converging upwardly above said shoulde 8. A container closure comprising a cap havin a longitudinal guide opening therein, a gui e member adapted to be secured to a container and extending throu h the opening in the cap and a substantial 'stance thereabove, and a resilient projection on said guide member intermediate its'ends and ada ted to engage the cap in the closed position t ereof, sa1d cap being adapted to be moved past said projection to clear thetop of the container.
