Description
Q March 8, 1932. D, DAVls 1,848,771 *I HnRPIN Filed July 31. 1951 A Patented Mar. 8 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD D. DAVIS, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 THE BOYE NEEDLE COMPANY,
` OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A. CORPORATION 0E ILLINOIS HAIBPIN Application led July 31,
This invention relates to clip hairpins. It constitutes, in some respects, an improvement upon the type of hairpin described in my Patent No. y1,7 52,893. An object of the invention is to provide a clip hairpin of simple and sturdy construction which cannot easily be dislodged and which holds the body of the pin concealed within the hair.
With clip hairpins heretofore used, there has been a tendency for the pin to engage a lock of hair along an intermediate point of the pin and the pin tends to rock upon the lock of hair so that one end or the other of the hairpin protrudes from the hair. With my improved form of hairpin, the pin is locked to the hair at the free extremities of its legs and the pin is thus securely retained within the hair. Also, the improved form of hairpin tends to conform to the head of the wearer and lies snugly in position. A further object is to provide hair-engaging Serrat-ions or knurling which cooperate with the structure ofthe pin to hold the pin in place. Other objects 'and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
The invention is illustrated, in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings, in which- 80 Figure l is a plan view of the inner face of the hairpin before the pin has been crimped and bent to place it in finished condition; Fig. 2, a side View of the pin inthe form illustrated in Fig. l; and Fig. 3, anenlarged side view of the finished pin after the bending and crimping operation.
In the illustration given, 1 designates a loop or bent portion, and 2 and 3 the lower and upper legs of the pin which are formed integrally with the loop 1. The lower leg 2 is substantiallystraight throughout the greater extent of its length, butis curved downwardly along its front tip portion 4. The forward half portion of the upper leg 3 is crimped or provided with waves at 5. The upper leg 3 is also provided with a downwardly curved tip portion 6 which contacts with the tip portion 4 ofthe lower leg 2.
Either or both of the legs may be provided on their inner surfaces with knurling or hair- 1931. Serial No. 554,308.
engaging ser-rations. In the illustration given, both of the hair clasping members 2 and 3 have their inner surfaces superficially roughened or knurled as indicated'at 7. The roughened surfaces 7engage individual hairs and the indlvidual hairs yserve as wedges to lock entire strands of hair in the pin.
'Ihe downwardly curved tip portions 4 and 6 of thehair claspingmembers 2 and 3 are preferably so formed as to enable these portions of the pin to rest snugly against the head of the wearer. Also, their contacting inner surfaces serve to engage strands of hair and thus anchor the front end of the pin well within the hair. With the front end of the es clip hairpin securely tied in position, and withthe body of the pin secured by means `of the roughened surfaces 7 to locks of hair,
the pivotal or rocking action of the hairpin,
heretofore mentioned, is avoided, the entire pin` remaining in its initial position in the air.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only 'and no unnecessary limitations should 16 be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view ofthe prior art.
I claim: t
1. A clip-hairpin comprising a loop and inner and outer hair-clasping members extending from said loop and provided at their free extremities with substantially parallel in-curves having superficially roughened adjacent surfaces. E
2. A clip-hairpin comprising a loop and inner and outer hair-clasping members extending from said loop, the inner member having a substantially straight portion eX- tending from the loop and an in-curved endportion, the clasping surface of sa-id inner member being superlicially roughened throughout its straight' portion and curved portion,- and the outer member having' a crimped portion overlying the straight portion of the inner member and a. curved endportion overlying the Vcurved end-portion of the inner member, the clasping surface of the outer 4member being roughened throughout the crimped portion and the curved extremity thereof.
3.*A clip-hairpin comprising a loop and inner yand outer hair-claspin members extending from said loop an provided at their free extremities with substantially arallel in-curves having their adjacent sur aces in contact, at least one of said surfaces being superficially roughened.
4. A clip-hairpin'comprising a loop and inner and outer hair-olas ing members extending from said loop an provided at their free extremities with substantially arallel `incurves having their adjacent sur aces in ,A contact, at least one of said hair-clasping members havin a portion of its 'inner surface superlicial y roughened.
