This invention relates to theatrical makeup boxes, and the invention seeks generally to provide a novel and valuable type of malteup kit which may be rapidly converted from work-bench to carrying case, and vice versa.

One object of the invention is to provide a complete assembly of theatrical make-up accessories, and in combination therewith storage in-eans therefor which may be eX- io panded instantaneously to establish the workbench above mentioned and to display independently and accessibly, and readily removably, the various materials, appliances and agencies required for all orl practically all contingencies; and yet a combination readily collapsed into an exceedingly compact and conveniently transportable vcarrying-case.

Another object of the invention is to provide in an assembly as above, now badly needed by travelling members of the theatrical profession, a combination of parts so coacting that the aforesaid materials, appliances and agencies, some or most of which are necessarily loosely positioned at their appointed locations, are all protected against displacenient from suoli locations, loss of contents where they are receptacles for paste, power,

or liquid, and any possible injury, when a single element, necessary to conver the outfit 3G from a work-bench to carry-all, is applied.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out, or will become apparent, as the specification proceeds.

With the above indicated objects inview, the invention resides in certain novel constructions and combinations and arrangement of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompaiiying drawings, which latter show an embodiment of the invention as at present preferred. f

Referring now more in detail to the drawings, a portable theatrical make-up box 10 is constructed of a thin sheet metal, say iron, and includes generally a rear wall 11, side walls 12 and 13, a bottom wall 14 and a U-shaped top'wall 15.V Two metal doors 16 and 17 are hingedly mounted to the side walls 12 and 13 as at 18 and 19. Two inner or lesser side wall portions 20 and 21, together with a lesser rear wall 22, provide an opening or working area with-in the U-shaped\ structure defined by and located below the U-shaped top wall 15, when, as in Fig. 1, an auxiliary structure including a cover and other parts as hereinafter described is removed to expose the top` andfrontyofthe carrying case, thereby toconvert ythe latter instantly into atheatrical-work-bench.

The various walls just referred to may be secured together by soldering or welding or" any other desirable means, and in construction of the box various pluralities of the wall members may be made integral, as, for yeX- ainple, the top portion 15, the rear wall 1 and the base portion 14, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture. Referring next to the various work-bench details, two suitable openings in wall portion 22 are for slide- drawers 23 and 24, which may be used for retaining hairpins, manicur- ,100

ing implements and general accessories. These drawer members may be constructed of light metal, preferably of stainless steel; front walls 23 and 24 of said drawers, carrying pull knobs 25 and 26, being made somewhat oversize as shown in Figs. 5 and 8. Suitable supports 27 and 28 for the upper drawer'23 are provided as shown in Fig. 8; while the lower drawer 24 may rest upon the main bottom wall 14. Two metal side members 29 and 30 serve as guides for the sides of said drawers, and two springclips 31 and 32, which may be integral with said guide members, serve to retain said drawers and hold same against unintentional removal, particularly when said box, transformed as below described into a carrying case, is being transported.

The U-shaped superstructure of the workbench entity is generally hollow; but access to the interior thereof is had, at the locations, among others, of the doors 16 and 17. These doors are openable by pulls on ears 33 and 34, and are impesitively but reliably held in closed position by ball members 35 and 36 which engage the inner sides of lesser walls 16 and 17.

These doors, further, coact with the other structural features of the U-shaped superstructure,'to support and house all the various compartments other than the drawers 23 and 24 aforesaid and all the various devices, appliances and materials which, as well as the above-mentioned contents of said drawers, should always be at hand for theatrical make-up. i

Accordingly, it will be noted that the following provisions are made: Y

On the inner side of the door 16 is a spring clip holder 37 for holding a standard-size box of mascaro. On the inner side of the other door 17 is mounted a heating pan 41 for melting said mascaro; said pan forming part of ar unitary metal fitment 38, carrying suitably spaced below'the pan spring prongs 40 for gripping and holdingV a .tray 39 for a cube of solidified alcoholV or the like. A small socket 42 is somewhat angularly secured to the inner side of said doorv 17, for holding a mascaro dauber 43 when said door is open; dauber 43 is Vreadily removable, but when the door is closedy the dauber is held in socket 42 by top wall 15. Referring to Fig. 7, a

yspring metal clip 44 is provided for holding a common type of paper covered match container, or match book; this clip being secured to side wall 21.

For accommodating a standard eye-brow pencil E (Figs. 1 and a vertical tubular support 45 is secured in place at the junction of walls 21 and 22; that is within the open working space S. This support or sleeve 45 is slit as at 46 to provide a spring clip to frictionally hold said eyebrow pencil.

Two circular openings are in th'e front portions of the U-shaped top wall 15, and within these openings are hung metal containers 47 and 48 by the extended rim portions of the latter; each of these containers being fairly shallow pans, one used say for holding a standard half-pound jar of cold cream K and the other say for holding a standard one half pound box of powder P.

v A somewhat similar container 49, but more of sleeve form as shown in Fig. 2, is inserted in a round opening in said top wall 15, and is used for holding the handle of a safety razor Z; this container carrying a transverse leaf 49 to act as a bottom, and being slit longitudinally at 50 to provide a spring clip to frictionally grip said handle. Adjacently, and similarly serJ in an appropriately shaped opening in said top wall, is a metal box provided with a spring clip integral therewith for serving as a holder for a standard package G of razor blades. Four deeplytubular metal containers 52, 53, 54 and 55 are provided with upper peripheral flanges like the containers 47, 48 and 49 and removably also hung in suitable holes in said top wall 15; said containers 52, 53, 54 and 55 being used for nolding j ars with metal screw covers containing, say, water, eye wash,alco hol and perfume, respectively. A similar but less deep metal container 56 may hold say a pin cushion (not'shown).

Six metalfcontainers, 57, 58, 59, 60, 6l. and 62, of substantially thesame size and of the same construction as the member 56, and set in suitable openings in top wall 15 opposite working space S, are used as contaiin ers for grease paints of various colors. A cover 63 for all these grease paint containers is hingedly mounted slightly to the rear thereof as at 64; this minor cover carrying an ear 65 for acting as a handle, and having a ball 66 for snap-'latching with a suitable aperture in top wall 15 to secure the cover against unintentional opening.

In order that when the complementary structure hereinafter described is applied to the work-bench already described, thereby to convert said work-bench into a carrying case, the -latter may be carried in any position without displacing, rattling or injuring any of the units above referred to as loosely or merely frictionally or gravitationally occupying itc their locations, the provision is made, as seen from Figs. l to 5, that the tops of such units all lie in the same plane parallel to and a desired distance above top wall 15,-even`as to standard packages, jars and bottles, as, for instance, the half-pound coldA cream and powder glass boxes or jars K and P. Y

Said complementary structure includes a top portion 72, end portions 73, and front and baclr portions 7 4, forming the main cover, of which the top portion 7 2, at the underside of a feltliner 7 2a preferably provided thereof and secured thereto, is to lie somewhat lower than the plane aboif'e-mentioned, that is, so that said felt will be somewhat com pressed when the complementary structure is secured in place to form the carrying case of the present invention.

Continuing the description of said comple-r mentary structure, the same further includes, hingedly connected as 77 to the front portion 7st of the main cover, a plate or sheet element to act as the main front wall of the entire combination, and the final closure of the .vorli-bench-which front wall may be conveniently equipped with a desired type of handle, as indicated at 76 for transporting the carrying case valise-fashion. n

The back portion 7 el. of the complementary structure is detachably securableto the rear wall ll of the make-up box by means of identical hinge devices indicated at 7S and 7 91 in Fig. l. Each of these devices, as shown in the enlarged detail of F ig. 9, comprises a tongued metal litnient 80 on the complementary structure, and a metal strap 81 on rear wall l5 of the make-up box. The ends of such tongues are bent outwardly in order to present their disengagement from straps 1 8l when the complementary structure is in a major front wall 75, and then applying to the apertured tongue a miniature padlock 8st. Said front wall 75 has an inturned flange .75ct extending the entire length of the bottom edge of said wall' and it will be noted that this flange will finally underlie the tongue 82.

rlhe hereinbefore described construction admits of considerable modification without depart-ing from the invention; therefore, it is the wish not to be limited to the precise arrangements shown and described. which are as aforesaid, by way of illustration merely. In other words the scope of protection contemplated is to be taken solely from the appended claims, interpreted as broadly as is consistent with the prior art.

I claim:

A theatrical make-up box comprising a body portion and a top therefor cut away at its central front part to allow the bottom of the body to be yused as a working space, a drawer to the rear ofthe working space and extending thereinto when pulled ont, a plurality of open top containers depending from the top of the box at the sides of the central front working space and a readily detachable cover for the body, the cover being adapted to hold articles disposed in the top in place.
