Description

Feb. 23, 1932. SMELSER 1,846,460
SMOKING EQUiPMENT Filed May 12, 1930 Patented Feb. 23, 1932 FRANK SMELSER, OF DEER LODGE, MONTANA SMOKING EQUIPMENT Application filed May 12,
This invention appertains to tobacco users appliances and more particularly to smoking pipes.
One of the primary objects of my invention is the provision of novel means for connecting the bit of a smoking pipe with the stem thereof whereby a strong joint will be made and whereby the stem and bit will both be protect-- ed against splitting.
Another important object of my invention is the provision of a novel ferrule for connecting the bit of a pipe with the stem thereof, the ferrule engaging both the bit and the stem and having a reinforcing sleeve for receiving an extension formed either on the stem or hit as may be desired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a novel coupling for the stem of smoking pipes, which will be durable and ellit cient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
l Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction,
arrangement and formation of parts, as Will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe, showing the stem and bit thereof in longitudinal section with the coupling in use,
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1 through the improved coupling,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention showing the parts separated to illustrate more clearly the novel coupling, the ferrule thereof being shown broken away and in section,
Figure 4 is a detail perspective View of the ferrule showing parts thereof broken away and in section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherer in similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with my invention, which in the present showing has been illustrated of the straight stem type, but
1930. Serial No. 451,763.
it is to be understood that a pipe embodying my novel features can be of the curved stem type, if desired.
As shown, the pipe A comprises the bowl 10. having the usual integral stem 11 provided with an axial bore 12. The stem 11 has connected thereto the bit 13 by my novel cou' pling, which will be hereinafter more specifically described. The bit 13 is likewise provided with a longitudinally extending bore 14 and the forward end of the bit is pro vided with a reduced extension 15.
In accordance with my invention, the stem 11 of the pipe can have the forward end of its bore enlarged to provide a chamber 16.
My novel coupling includes a ferrule 20 preferably formed of metal and the same, at a point intermediate its ends, is provided with a partition 21 forming a compartment for receiving the stem 11 and a compartment for receiving the bit 13. The partition 21 supports an internal sleeve 22 which extends forwardly and terminates in the same plane as the forward end of the ferrule 20. This internal sleeve 22 is of such a size as to receive the reduced extension 15 of the bit 13 and to snugly fit within the chamber 16 of the stem 11.
If desired, the outer surfaces of the stem 11 and the bit 13 at the point of connection thereof with the ferrule may be reduced in diameter to form a seat for receiving the ferrule, as shown in the drawings, or this seat may be eliminated.
By my improved coupling I am enabled to provide a strong and rigid joint and the ferrule engaging both the stem and bit effectively strengthens the same and prevents splitting of these parts.
Further, the sleeve 22 of the H ferrule braces the entire structure and forms i semble and a 1eak-proof connection is provided.
It is to be understood that the form of invention herewith shown and described is to be taken merely as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
In a smoking pipe, a stem and a bit, an exteriorly plain ferrule provided between the ends thereof with an internal transverse annular partition dividing'the ferrule into separate stem and bit receiving chambers arranged end to end and a sleeve joined at one end to the inner edge of said transverse annular partition and locked entirely Within said ferrule in spaced relation to the inner wall of said stem receiving chamber, said bit being formed at one end thereof with an axial extension snugly received within said sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANK SMELSER.
