The invention relates to door latches and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a plate above the hinged side of the door having a plurality of arcuately arranged apertures for the reception of the upper end of a vertically slidable rod carried by the door and controlled by a pivoted latch mounted on the door and forming means for holding the door open in various positions.
A further object is to form the holding plate in two sections and with a right angularly disposed ortion adapted to be secured to a wall and having arcuately arranged apertures thereby allowing the device to be cheaply manufactured and the parts of the plate to be interchangeable and reversible according to the side of a wall adapted to receive the plate.
A further object is to provide the door stile with a rockable shaft having a handle mem her on one side of the door and a bar on the other side of the door beneath the pivoted latch and forming means whereby upon rock-- ing of the shaft in either direction, said bar will be raised.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a wall and 2 a conventional form Serial No. 234,393.
of door, which is hingedly connected at 3 within the door opening 4. Secured to the wall 1 above the hinged side of the door 2 by means of screws 5 is a holding plate 6, which plate is preferably right angularly shaped and formed from two sections semicircular shaped, and which sections are provided with arcuately arranged apertures 7, which apertures receive the upper end of the vertically slidable rod 8 carried by the door for holding the door in various open positions. It will be noted by forming the holding plate 6 in two sections, the parts are interchangeable and by providing each semicircular portion of the plate as a whole with arcuate apertures the plate can be placed on either side of a door, or one plate used if desired on either sideof the door. It will also be noted that the plates can be stamped from a single piece of material.
Pivotally mounted on the door at 9 is a rockable latch bar 10, to one end of which is connected at 11 the lower end of the rod 8 and the other end of the latch bar 10 extends through the loop 12 and is adapted to be re ceived by a keeper 13 carried by the wall adjacent the free side of the door for normally holding the door closed. When the door is in closed position it will be noted the latch bar is also in engagement with the plate as shown in Figure 1, and when it is desired to open and unlatch the door the operator grasps the handle member 14 and forces the same upwardly which will impart a downward pull on the bar 8 and simultaneously raise the latching bar 10 where it will clear the keeper 13, and at which time the door is swung to the desired open position, the latching bar released which will force the rod 8 upwardly into one of the apertures.
Rotatably mounted in a bearing 15 of the door 2 is a rock shaft 16, the outer end of which has a bearing in the loop 12, and the inner end of which is provided with an angularly disposed handle 17, adapted to be grasped by the operator for rocking the shaft, and secured to the upper side of the shaft 16 is a member 18, which when in horizontal po sition as shown in the drawings engages the under side of the latching bar 10. It will be noted that when a person on the opposite side of the door desires to open the door, it Will only be necessary to grasp the handle member 17 and impart a partial rotation to the shaft 16, Which will raise one end of the member 18, which in turn Will raise the latching bar 10, thereby unlatching the door in relation to the plate 6 and to the keeper 13. It Will also be noted the device may be applied to a door Without varying the construction thereof.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is A latch comprising a pivoted latching barsubstantially horizontally disposed and mounted on a door, a plate above the hinging point of the door andhaving a plurality of arcuately arranged apertures, a, sliding rod mounted on the door and carried by the latching bar and cooperating With said apertures, a loop carried by the door and through Which one end of the latching bar extends, a
keeper adjacent the door for. the reception of one end of the latching bar, a rock shaft extending transversely through the door, said rock shaft having a bearing in the loop, a member carried by the upper side of said rock shaft and engaging the under side of the pivoted latching bar, said member extending beyond the opposite sides of the rock shaftvand forming means whereby upon rocking of the rock shaft. in either direction the latching bar Will be raised out of engagement with the keeper and the slide rod out of engagement with the plate.
