A seat 29 is secured to the upper face of the lever 25 near its free end and is shaped to conform to the periphery of the disk 11 in connection with which it is to be used. This seat 29 is designed when the device is applied to be exactly under the center of the disk 11 and is held in this position by means now to be described.
A casting 30 shown in detail in Fig. 6 is designed to be bolted to the machine table 6 as is shown in Fig. 3 and is designed to operate as a fulcrum for a long weight carrying lever 40. This lever 4.0 is designed to extend under the free end of the disk engaging lever 25 and hold it with the seat 29 engaging the disk.
The casting or bracket 30 extends transversely of the machine table 5 parallel with the lever 25 and is clamped to the table by means of an inturned lip 31 at one end of said bracket and an L-shaped bolt 32 spaced from said lip and extending obliquely so that it may be securely engaged with an undercut lug of the table 5. Extending upwardly from the other end of the casting 30 are two longitudinally spaced standards 33 and 34 provided with registering notches or bearings 35 designed to receive pintles 41 which project laterally from opposite faces of the lever 40 and form a fulcrum for said lever. The upstanding standards 33 and 34: form guides for the lever to prevent its lateral displacement. The front end of the lever to is ofiset from the remainder and the rear portion of the lever is provided throughout its length with a graduation indicating pounds to disclose the force of the weight 43 which is adjustably mounted on the graduated end of the lever and which is secured in adjusted position thereon by means of a set screw 34.
It will thus be seen that the lever 40 extends in a plane at right angles to the lever 25 and they are so mounted that they do not interfere with the use of the regular rests provided with machines of this character.
In the use of this attachment the crank shaft 1' is clamped to the throw-out blocks 7 in the usual manner with the pin centered and set up for. grinding by the wheel 2 exactly a s it would be if this attachment were not used. WVhen the crank shaft has been so set up the V-block 16 is clamped to the center main bearing by means of the strap clamp 17 being set parallel with the throw-out blocks 7. The two-piece disk 11 is then clamped to the V-shaped block 16 by means of the two bolts 24 and is moved in or out and adjusted until it will run approximately true, the slots 22 and 23 providing for the setting of the disk at any stroke desired. When the disk and the V-block have been clamped to the shaft 1 the weight carrier'30 is clamped to the bed of the machine and the lever 25 is set with the seat 29 thereof exactly under the center of disk 11. The weight 43 is then adjusted to suit the particular shaft being ground and will operate to hold such shaft against sagging thereby adapting the shaft to be ground as nearly round as possible so that no errors may be detected in this respect even with a micrometer.
WVithout further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will, of course, be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction -may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or its scope as claimed. v
I claim:
1. A sag eliminating attachment for crank shaft grinding machines comprising a disk having means for adjustably mounting it on the shaft to be ground, pressure exerting means for engaging the periphery of said disk, and means for controlling pressure exerted by said pressure means to overcome the sag caused by the weight of the shaft and the pressure of the grinding wheel thereon.
2. A sag eliminating attachment for crank shaft grinding machines comprising a member having means for adjustable mounting on a shaft to be ground means for exerting pressure on said member in a direction against the sagging tendency of the shaft, and means for controlling the pressure exerted by said pressure means.
3. A sag eliminating attachment for crank shaft grinding machines comprising a member having means for adjustable mounting on a shaft to be ground, means for exerting pressure on said member in a direction against the sagging tendency of the shaft, a lever for engaging said pressure exerting means, and means for varying the force exerted by said lever on said means whereby the sagging tendency of the shaft being ground is controlled.
4. A sag eliminating attachment for crank shaft grinding machines comprising a sep arably connected sectional disk, means for mounting said disk on a shaft to be ground and for adjusting it relatively to said shaft,
a pressure exerting lever engaging the peing an enlarged elongated opening for the passage of the shaft to be ground, a V-block adjustably mounted on said disk, means for clamping said block to the shaft to be ground, a lever fulcrumed at one end on a support 'and having its free end engaging the periphery of said disk, and another lever extending at right angles to the first mentioned lever and supporting it, and pressure means for causing the lastmentioned lever to foreibly engage the first mentioned lever and hold it engaged with the periphery'of thedisk.
