Slidably positioned in the groove 30 is an actuating member 40, in the form of a rectangular block, having at the inner end thereof an obliquely sloping, downwardly facing cam surface 41 adapted to frictionally con tact the balls 35 inserted in the cam face 32. The outer end 42 of the actuating member 40 normally projects through an opening 43 in the wall 17 of the casing 16 adjacent the j amb 44 of the door frame 13, as shown in Fig. 2, this end 42 serving as a bumper head adapted to contact the jamb 44 when the door 11 is closed. Resilient means in the form of a ten sion spring 45 is shown connecting the actuating member 40 and the plate 25, there being a recess .46 provided in the lower surface of the member 40 to accommodate the spring 45 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The spring 45, while not essential to the operation of my device, is preferably provided to normally urge the actuating member 40 into its outwardly projecting position as well as to assist the spring 29n in drawingthe plate 25 upwardly within the casing 16.
The outward movement of the actuating member 40 is limited by a bar 50, which is arranged within the casing 16 in such a manner as to contact an upwardly extending abutment 51 provided on the inner end of the member 40 when this member is in its outer or normal position. The bar 50 also serves as a manually operable` means of imparting.
movement to the actuating member 40, this bar being partly cylindrical, as shown in Fig. 4, so that said bar is rotatable as well as longitudinally slidable relative to the casing 16. Extending transversely outward from one side of the bar 50 is a pin 52, which projects through an opening 52L in the easing 16 and the door 11, and is provided with a grasping knob 53 for the manual manipulation thereof. A plate 54 secured to the door 11, as by screws 55, is provided with notches 56 adapted for the reception of the pin 52 for a purpose to be described later. .Y
The upper surface 60 of the actuating member 40 is preferably provided with a plurality of drilled holes 61in which are placed. balls 62 adapted to contact the wall 19 of thc casing`16 to reduce friction between the cas-Y ing 16 and the actuating 4member 40.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Vhen the door 11 is open the movable parts of the device are allowed to assume their respective normal positions indicated in Fig. 2, at which time the sealing strip 26 is clear of the sill 22, and the bumper head 42 of the actuating member 40 projects outwardly beond the end 17 of thecasing 16, as described.
When the door 11 is moved towards its closed position the bumper head 42 contacts the j amb 44 of the door frame 13 and the actuating member 40 isY pushed inwardly into the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, with the result that the sealing member is forced downwardly, due to the camming action bctween the cam face 32 and the cam surface 41.' 1t willrbe seen that when the sealing member 26 is in its lowermost position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the rubber strip 27 contacts the sill 22 in such a. manner as to exclude air drafts, rain or snow. It will be `clearly understood that when the door 11 is opened the sealing member will move upwardly under the influence of the spring 295, and the actuating member 40 will be forced outwardly by the camming action between the cam face 32 and the cam surface 41, assisted by the spring 45, into its normal position.
Should it be desired to hold the door 11 in open position, the grasping knob 53 may be raised into the position lindicated by dotted line 7 O of Fig. 4, so that the pin 52 is clear of the notches 56. The knob 53 is then drawn in the direction of the arrow 71 of Figs. 1, 2 and 5, motion being impartedv vto the actuating member 40 in the same direction, by reason of the contact between the bar 50 and the abutmentV 51, this movement of the actuating member 40 acuating the sealing member in the' manner described above. When the bar 50 is moved in the direction of the arrow 7l sufliciently to cause the rubber strip 27 to pressurely engage the sill 22, the grasping knob 53 may be depressed so that the pin 52 engages one of the notches 56, which serves to lock all/the moving parts of the device in their respective operative positions. The release of the door is accomplished by simply raising the grasping knob 53 so that the pin 52 clears the notches 56, whereupon the movable parts of the device automatically assume their'normal positions, as above described.
Although l have herein shown and described a single embodiment of my invention it lshould be understood that I am aware various features thereof might be changed and numerous embodiments thereof might be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
