My present invention relates to baflles for steam boilers, particularly for such boilers having horizontally inclined tubes with bafiies extending generally in a direction crosswise of the tubes.

Like reference characters indicate like parts in the several V1QWS. In Fig. 1 is shown a boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into an upper bank 10 and a lower bank 11 spaced apart to form a chamber between. the banks, the chamber in this case accommodating a superheater having tubes 12 extending inward from the sides of the setting and connected by headers 13 and 14. Above the upper bank 10 is a superheater having tubes 15 connected by headers 16 and 17. The two superheaters are connected in series, as shown'in dotted lines in Fig. 2, with the steam and water drum 18.
Above the lower bank 11 and extending from the down-take headers thereof is 'a short bafile 19. From the end of the baffle 19 ex-' tends a bafiie across the space between the' banks and also across the upper bank, the bafile shown in Fig. 1 being made up of a lower and an upper portion, the lower portion, which is the part which extends across the space, being inclined to the horizontal, and the part which extends across the. tubes being vertical in the form illustrated.-
In Fig. 1, the lower portion of this baflie is made up of metallic members having engaging pieces 200 which in turn engage with metallic parts to protect them from the hotgases flowing upward across the lower bank 11 into the superheater chamber. At the same time, by inclining the baffle across this space, the pass for the gases through the chamber is gradually decreased to maintain the velocity of the gases as they are cooled by contact with the superheater tubes.
The battle across the upper bank 10 will be made up preferably in the usual manner with metallicplates and a refractory material in front of such plates, these metallic plates being anchored to the tubes of the bank 10.
The upper part of the lowerportion of the He across the upper bank 10 so as to assist in taking up the overturning moment of the lower portion of the bafiie.

joint. Two rows of tile 24 extend in front of these plates and are supported on the tubes 10. Crossbars 25 may be located in the diagonal aisles of the tubes in contact with the rear faces of the plates 23', these bars being held in place by members 26 between the bars and, clamps 27 connected to the tubes 10.
The lower portion of the bafile extending across the space between the banks, in the form shown in Figs. 3 to 7, inclusive, has a plurality of metallic plates 28 placed side by side across the boiler, these plates extending the entire distance between the two banks and, in the form shown, having a foot portion29 extending parallel to the bafile 19 and engaging an upstanding projection in that battle. At the upper portionof the plates 28,
there is a tongue-like portion which engages back of a similar tongue-likeportion of the lower edge of the lowermost plate 23 of the upper portion of the battle, and preferably the plates 28 and this lowermost plate 23are connected by straps 30 bolted to the two plates. Preferably, the lower portion of each of the diagonal bars 25 is notched, as at 31, and flat bars 32 are passed through these notches and extend back of the plates 28.
In the form shown, the plates 28 have projections 33 on their front faces, these proj ections, in the illustrative form, being provided with bulbs, the projections and the bulbs extending vertically along the faces of the plates 28. Tile 34 are threaded on the projections 33 and in the manner best shown in Fig. 6, each of the tile having a recess on its side which cooperates with a recess on the adjacent side of the next row'of tile to form a recess which will engage around the bulb'of the projection 33. Preferably, the projections 33 stop short of the bottoms of the plates 28 so as to leave sufficient distance to'permit a tile to be inserted at the bottom of the plate 28-and moved upward into position on the projections 33. Fig. 5 shows one of the tile 34 and the arrow indicates the direction in which it is moved to bring it in position to be moved upward into place. After all of the tile except the last one have been positioned, the last tile can be moved into place to support the tile above it, this tile being held by the weight of the row of tile which it supports.
Preferably, the side faces of the tile 34 are arranged-so that the joint at the frontof these tile is out of a-linement with the projections 33, the side faces being curved in Fig. 6 to accomplish this. Between the tile 34 and the plates 28 may be a layer of insulating material 35. Preferably. the joints between the plates 28 are arranged so that no parallel joint in the tile 34 comes opposite such joint between the plates. By forming the recesses for the bulb projections and the associated joints between the tiles so that the outer portion of each joint is out of alinement with each projection, the tiles form a screen for the radiant heat, and no straight path for the radiant heat to the bulb projections is produced, thereby protecting the bulb projections which are usually. formed of cast iron from intense heat. cent tiles is formed of three portions, the front and rear portions being at right angles to the'faces of the tiles, the rear portion coming opposite the bulbed projection and the front portion being offset therefrom. Thetwo portions are joined by a third portion in which the change of direction is gradual. By forming the tiles in this manner, there are no projecting tongues or any sharp projecting corners which are in practice easily. broken, and the strength of one tile is not sacrificed in favor of an adjacent tile. It will, of course, be understood that with the Water tubes spaced in the described manner, thetiles in the inclined baffle are subjected to the radiant heat of the furnace which can pass through the diagonal lanes between the tubes of the lower bank. Furthermore, the tiles are subjected to radiant heat from any flames in the superheater chamber.
In the arrangement shown, the plates 28 are held securely in position, the tendencyto slide down the tubes being taken up by the bars 25 through the clips 27. The bars 32 extending to the bottom of the plates28 trans mit some of this pressure to the diagonal bars 25. Furthermore, the projection 29 further assists in transmitting some of the weight of the baflle to the baffle 19 and thence to the uptake headers. By reason of the connection between the upper part of the plates 28 and the main battle extending across the upper tubes, the tendency of the inclined battle across the space to overturn or fall to the right of Fig. 3 is taken up. I
The tile 34 are partly suspended on the plates 28, and there is suflicient freedom in the recesses surrounding the projections 33 the lower portion of the baffle to the upper portion and from thence to the upper bank of tubes. By forming the side faces of the tile so that the joint at the front is out ofkalinement with the projections 33, no radiant The joint between adjaheat can strike the projections through the j spaces that are left between the tiles, as illustrated, to allow for. expansion, and the possibility of the hot gases striking such projec- .tions is minimized. It is advantageous to form the side 'faces of the tiles so that the formed in such a way that there are no sudden changes in the contour and may be made of a shape that can be burned in their manufacture to a more uniform grade than when there are sudden changes'of form in the contour. Tiles made in this way will stand up better in service than those having sudden changes in the form of'the contour.
v The arrangement shown in Figs. 8 to inclusive, is similar to that just described, except that, instead of the plates 28, the rear portion of the bafile across the space may be made up ofa heat-resisting material, WhlCll, if desired, may be formed up as a wall of tile or the like or as a continuous hardened plastic. Such an arrangement is shown at 36. The diagonal bars are provided at their lower portions with holes through which extends a bar 37 on which, in. turn, are threaded metallic members 38 having a bulbed portion 39 and an engaging end 40, the web of the member 38 extending through the backing 36 with the bulbed portions 39 in front thereof. On these bulbed portions are suspended tile 410 having recesses in their sides in the manner similar to that shown in Fig- 6 to surround the bulbs 39, so that thetile is supported on the metallic-members 38, which. in turn, are engaged by the rod 37 pro ecting through the lowermost portion of the diagonal bars 25. The ends 40 of the metallic members 38 engage the lowermost one of the backing plates 23 of the battle extending to the upper bank of tubes. The tendency for the battle across the space to slide downward is taken up by the diagonal bars 25 and is also resisted by the contact between the lower lefthand side of the members 38 with the upper end of the baffle 19. The tendency of this portion of the battle to overturn is prevented by the extension 40 engaging the plates 23 and some of the weight of the lower portion of the battle is transmitted to the upper tubes of the tile 410 connecting the metallic members 38 with the plates 23. In this arrangement, the bulb portion 39 is as long as the metallic members 38, the special tile 42 being removed while the tile 41 are being movedti nto position on the bulb 39 and then the tile 42 is inserted, this latter tile supporting the weight of the tile 41 above it. p
In Figs. 16. 17 and 18 is shown a further modification in which the metallic pieces 43 are similar to the pieces 38, but are L -shaped in cross-section, the hooks on the pieces 43 extending alternately in opposite d1rect1ons to engage grooves 44 in the mam tile 45. Auxmoved laterally so that iliary tile 46 are moved into posi't-ionbetwen the members 43 after these latter have been their hooks engage in the grooves 44 of'the tile 45.
It will be understood that. my invention may be varied within wide limits and that the arrangements shown are merely illustrative..
I claim:
1. A water tube boiler'having banks of tubes with a s ace therebetween, and a battle extending within the space and inclined to the'vertical, said baflie comprising fixed metallic members and tile attached to and at least partly supported by said'fixed members and located on the lower side of the battle.
2. In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a bailie extending across the space and inclined to'the vertical, said baflie comprising fixed metallic members and-tile attached to and at least partly supported 'by said fixed members and located on'the lower side of the bailie. a

In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a battle extending across the space and inclined to the vertical, said battle comprising fixed metallic members having headed projections on their lower side, and tile attached to said projections and locatedon the lower side of the battle.
4. In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a battle extending across the space and inclined to the vertical, said battle comprising fixed metallic members having vertically extending bulbed projections on their lower side and tile having recesses engaging said bulbed projections and suspended on the lower side of the battle.
5. In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a battle extending across the space and inclined to the vertical, said baflle comprising metallic plates extending from the lower to the upper bank and located side by side across the space, said plates having projections on their front and lower faces, meansto anchor said plates to prevent their overturning. and tile attached to .the said projections and'suspended on the lower faces of said plates.

In a steam boiler' having h orizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a bafiie extending across the space and inclined to the vertical, said bafile comprising metallic plates extending from the lower to the uper bank and located side by side across the space, said plates having vertical bulbed projections on their front and lower faces and tile having recesses engaging said bulbed projections and suspended on the lower side of the battle, said bulbedproject'ons extending from the upper bank downWartL-and each bulb having a plurality of tile threaded thereon, the bulb terminating at a point above the lower bank a distance suthcient to permit the recess in each separate tile to be moved into alin'ement with the bulbed projections.

In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a battle extending across the space and inclined to the vertical, said baffle comprising metallic plates extending from the lower to the upper bank and located side by side across the space. said plates having projections on their front and lower faces,
means to anchor said plates to prevent their overturning, and tile attached to the said projections and suspended on the lower faces of said plates, the joints between the sides of the plates being out of alinement with the joints between the sides of vertical rows of tile.

In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween, a-bafiie extending across the space and inclined tothe vertical, said bafiie comprising metallic plates extendin from the lowerto the upper bank and locatec side by side. across the space, said plates having vertical bulbcd projections on their front and lower faces and tile having recesses engaging said bulbecl projections and suspended on the lower side of the battle, the recesses in the tile for the bulbed projections being formed partly in each face of adjacent tile 'and the joint. between such adjacent side faces'at the front of the tile being out of alinement with the recesses of the projections. 5

In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space therebetween. a bafile extending across the space and into and across the upper bank, the lower portion of the battle across the space being inclined to the vertical, the upper portion of the bathe in the upper bank comprising metallic plates anchored to the tubes and the said lower portion comprising metallic mem bers extending across the space and connected at their upper portions to the metallic plates of the upper portion and tile'attached to and at least partly supported by said metallic members on the lower side of the battle. 13. In a steam boiler having horizontally inclined tubes divided into banks with a space thcrebetween, a baflle extending across the space and into and across the upper bank, the lower portion of the baffle across the space bemg inclined to the vertical, the upper portion of the battle in the upper bank comprising metallic plates anchored to the tubes and the said lower portion comprising metallic plates extending from the lower bank to the upper bank across the space and positioned side by side across the boiler, the upper ends of the plates being connected to the metallic plates of the upper portion of the bafiie and the plates of the lower portion. of the baflie having vertical projecting ribs on the lower faces thereof. and tile having recesses engaging said ribs.

In an inclined bafiie arranged between spaced banks of water tubes, supporting members provided with bulb projections, tiles provided with recesses engaging said bulb projections and exposed on their free faces to the furnace, the recess'i'n the tiles for each bulb projection and the associated joint be tween adjacent tiles being so formed as to preclude a straight path being produced for the radiant heat to the bulb projections.
15. In a water tube boiler, spaced banks of water tubes. a superheater located between the said banks, an inclined bafiie arranged between 'the spaced banks of water tubes, said battle comprising supporting members provided with bulb projections, tiles provided with recesses engaging said bulb projections and exposed on their free faces to the furnace, the joints between adjacent tiles being suffor the radiant heat being produced to saidficiently deformed to preclude a straight path bulb projections.
