Description

Dec. 17, 1929.
J. PATTEN ET AL HEADLIGHT Filed Jan. 3, 1927 Patented Dec. 17, 1929 D STTES P QFIC HEADLIGHT Application filed January 3, 1927.
This invention relates to vehicle head lights and has for its object to provide an improved head light of the kind in which part of the light proceeding from the light source or sources is intercepted by a screen or screens so arranged in relation to a reflector that the emergence of light which would produce dazzle is prevented.
According to the invention a vehicle head light has a reflector consisting of upper and lower halves of a surface derived from a conic section separated by a cylindrical element and has two separate light sources disposed in the focal line of the cylindrical element.
Light sources are disposed at the foci of the upper and lower halves of the reflector, one or both of the light sources being provided with a reflecting screen which prevents the emergence of upwardly directed rays. In
both these arrangements, the emergence of light which would produce dazzle can be totally prevented by switching off one of the light sources.
An embodiment of the invention, according 5 to which the headlight has parabolic halves,
is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a Vertical section through the headlight, the lower source of light covered on the upper half.
Fig. 2 is a section similar to Fig. 1, both sources of light being covered on one half, the lower one on the upper half and the upper one on the lower half.
a is the upper half of the conic section and b is the lower half, the two halves being connected the one with the other by a cylindrical part c, e is the upper and f the lower source of light. In Fig. 1 the lower source of light f is covered with a totally reflecting mirrorfoil 9 on the upper half and, as shown in Fig. 2, both sources of light e and f have a mirror foil on one half, the lower one on the upper half and theupper one on the lower half.
We claim In a headlight, a reflector comprising two spaced and opposed portions each of which conforms to a longitudinal half of a surface of rotation, the surface thereof being formed by rotating a parabola abou its axis; an inter- Serial No. 158,688.
mediate connecting portion conforming to a surface of a parabolic cylinder; two sources of light positioned respectively at the foci of said first-named portions, and two hemispherical light shields having light-reflecting concave surfaces, said shields being positioned
