TOILET SEAT Filed July 13, 1928 I IN VEN TOR. flay/0 5., J03 #15 A TTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 10, 1929 PATENT. O FT TOEl'.
DAVID E. JUSTUS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI TOILET SEAT Application filed July 13,
My invention relates to toilet seats, and more particularly to secondary toilet seats and lids therefor adapted for use by small children, the principal objects of the invention being to provide a secondary seat in a toilet seat cover and to hinge a secondary seat lid to the cover so that the lid and hinge members will be spaced from the secondary seat in open position of the lid and will lie flush with the cover in closed position, whereby the upper surface of the cover will be smooth when the lid is closed, and comfort, convenience and safety of both adult and child users will be promoted, and hazard of damage to the cover, lid and other members of thetoilet fixture will be avoided.
In accomplishing these and other objects of my invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a position of a toilet fixture embodying my invention, illustrating a secondary seat lid in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the lid in open position and showing the hinge.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the toilet seat, cover and secondary seat lid illustrating the means for latching the lid to the cover in closed position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the hinge. 4
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a toilet seat supported by a toilet fixture 2 and having an opening 3 closed by a cover 4 adapted to rest on the seat and pivotally connected with the fixture by hinges 5.
The cover is provided with an opening 6 preferably by cutting a lid portion 7 therefrom and preserving said portion intact to comprise the lid or cover for the opening 6. The lid portion is cut out in a manner to form a tapering ledge or bevel edge 8 for the opening 6 and a peripheral bevel flange 9 on the lid whereby the lid may fit neatly in the opening and be supported from the cover.
The lid is pivotally connected with the cover by a hinge generally designated 10 and 1928. Serial No. 292,449.
comprising a cover hinge member 11 mortised in the cover and a lid hinge member 12 mortised in the lid. The cover hinge member 11 consists preferably of a strap-like piece of metal comprising a body portion 13 adapted to lie in a transverse recess 14 formed in the cover adjacent the ledge 8, and angularly extending arms 15 comprising leaves on the outerends of the body portion. These arms are received in parallel vertical slots 16 in the cover, extending through the ledge 8 and beyond the recess 14, the body portion being secured to the cover by a screw 17, the head of which is flush with the upper surface of the body portion. The slots form a hinge-supporting bracket or lug 18 extending toward the opening.
The member 11 overlies the lug and further comprises flanges 19 baclrbent over the arms 15 and spaced therefrom to form sockets 20 to receive lid hinge members presently described, and terminal cars 21 bent into parallelism with the body portion 13 and seated in recesses 22 in the cover aligned with the transverse recess 14 in the lug 18. Screws 23 secure the cars to the cover for reinforcing the lug.
The lid hinge member 12 comprises a plate 24 adapted to fit in a recess 25 in the lid inwardly from the flange 9, and platedilre arms 26 integral with the plate 24 extending at right angles to the plane of the plate 24 and in parallel lid slots 27, and having parallel side edges 28 and 29 extending angularly to the side edges of the plate. The outer ends 30 of the arms 26 extend angularly to the arms and are received between the portions 15 and 19 of the cover hinge member and are pivotally connected therewith by pins 31. The outer ends of the arms are thus mounted in the sockets 20which form tracks or guides for their movement, and the lid hinge member is supported from the lug and from the adjacent portions of the cover. The hinge member 12 is secured to the lid by countersunk screws 32.
Embedded in the cover 4 is a socket mem ber 33 comprising a screw having a concave head .34 countersunk in a notch 35 in the ledge 8, and a spring-pressed plunger 36 slidab-le in a tubular guide 37 mounted in a recess 38 of the lid is adapted to engage the head 34 to latch the lid to the cover in closed position. The plunger is limited in outward movement byengagement of a flange 39 on the inner end of its stem l'With a shoulder ll of the tubular' guide. A spring 42 bears against said shoulder andthe plunger for yieldingly latching the plunger 'Withthe screw 38.
It is apparent that With a secondary toilet seat and lid constructed and installed as described, the lid Will fit snugly in the opening o1 the cover, and Will be supported by the bevel ledge, the incidental steps such as painting and varnishing, supplying the place of materialremoved by cutting out of the lid member so that the lid Will lie flush with the surface of the cover.
The plate-like arms of the lid hinge being pivoted at points spaced from the opening will swing the lid rearwardly'fremthe opening When the lid is lifted, and the spaced slots in which the lid hinge arms move provide for sinking the hinges in the coverin closed position of the lid. The socket-forming portions of the cover hinge member which are sunk in the cover and connected respectively with the lug and the cover, serve to support the arms of the lid hinge member and confer rigidity and durability.v
1 The lid is easily operable both for opening and closing, proper seating oi. the lid on the cover is assured by the spaced plate-like lid hinge members, and no parts of the device are exposed in such a position as to cause damage While being used.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a toilet device including a seat and a .cover havinga tapered opening, a lid having bevel edges for seating in said opening for support from the cover, and a hinge pivotally connecting the lid with the cover comprising a cover member including a body portion morv tised in the cover and'in integral arm extending from said body portion and secured to v the cover, a lid member including a body portion 'mortised in the lidand an integral arm extending angularly from saidbody portion,
and means pivotally supporting the lid. arm
from thearm of the cover member. I
