Other objects relate to various features of construction and arrangement pointed out more lully hereinafter.
'lhe nature ol the invention will be understood 'from the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings in which pne embodiment is illustrated. In the drawings- Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a wooden box having two rightangularly disposed encircling straps applied thereto and connected by the improved seal of the present invention;
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged top plan view of the intersecting portions of the strap and the connecting seal;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;

- As illustrated in Fig. 1, the wooden box 1()` has applied thereto two Hat steel straps 11 and 12 which are located midway between the corners of the box and which encircle the box in tw'o rightangular planes so that they cross each other at the centers of the top and bottom ot' thebox. The ends of the strap 11 and 12 overlap each other as shown at 11.a and 1928. Serial No. 276,566.
12, respectively, and these overlapping ends are secured together by seals 13 which are preferably of the form described and claimed in the patent of Ralph l-l. Norton No. 1,260,016,granted March 19, 1918. Before the seals 13 are applied and operated upon by a sealing tool to form the dep-ressed portions 13 and thereby partially shear the edges ol the seal and ot' the overlapping portions ol 'the strap, the strap'is stretched taut so that when the seal is applied the strap is maintained tightly around the box.y Fven with this tight arrangement ol' the straps, they might be moved edgewise on the box and detached entirely therefrom unless they be interconnected at their intersections or attached to the bon by nailing or the like. 'lhe present invention provides securing means inthe form yof an interconnecting seal 14 which is applied to the straps 11 and 12 adjacent the point ol' intersection 15 on the top of the box. Each seal is Jormed initially as illustrated in Fig. 4 and comprises a dat plate `14e having two rightangular arms 1lb each of which has two downwardly extending parallel flanges 14C along its lateral edges. 'lhe ends of these flanges are preferably inclined as shown at 14:d and after the straps 11 and 12 have been applied to the box and the seals 13 secured thereon, the open seal may be applied -to the crossed straps 11 and 12 by slipping the 'flanges 14 downwardly thereover with one pair of flanges engaging each of the straps.

in the co-pending application of Messrs. Mad' Chesney and Ott, Serial No. 149,367, led November 19, 1926, or that shown in my application Serial No. 276,565, filed May 10, 1928, may be passed into engagement with the seal' to form the crimps 16 and to correspondingly shear the edges of the seal and of the straps. The formation of the depres sions 16 shears the edges of each arm 14h of the seal 14 and at the same time shears the edges of the straps 11 and 12 so that the seal 14 has an interlocking connection with each of the straps and cannot be removed there- I and neither strap can be moved from its position on the box. Of course, any number of 'crossed straps may be connected by means of the seals T14 Aand the straps may be located in various positions around the box or other package. The same sealing tool may be used in securing the seal 14 in place that is employed in securing the overlapping ends of the strap together by means of the seals 13 so that the advantages of the present invention may be obtained without any additional equipment other than the open seals of the form shown in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings there is illustrated the use of the seal of thepresent invention for securing together two crossed binders or straps and at the same time uniting the overlap ing ends of each strap, thus giving a dou le function to the seal 14 and making .it unnecessary to use the additional seals 13 shown in Fig. 1. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the two straps 21 and 22 cross each other at ri ht angles with their ends overlapping at 51e points of intersection as shown at 21'l and 22a. The seal 24 of the form previously described is placed in position to engage both`of'these straps and one armof the g seal is positioned over the overlapping ends of one strap so that when the seal is subseuentl operated upon by a sealing tool to orm t e depressions 24n in the edges of the strap and thereby partially shear the edges of the seal and the straps, the seal is united with the straps and at the same time the overlapping ends of the straps are secured together. The combination with apair of crossed straps overlapping each other, the ends of each strap being arranged to overlap adja-` cent the other strap, of a sealing devicehaving angularly disposed parts engaging'both of said straps and the overlapping ends therel of to secure said overlapping ends-and prevent relative movement of said straps.

The combination with a pair of crossed straps overlapping each other, the ends of each strapbemg arranged to overlap adjacent the other strap, of a sealing device having angularly disposed arms each adapted to engage the overlapping ends of one of said straps, said arms having flanges adapted to be bent around said straps, said seals and said straps havin projections produced in the edges thereo to'form an interlocking connection between the ends of each strap and the cooperating part of said seal.`
5. The combination with a pair of crossed metal straps, of a sheet metal sealing device having angularly Idisposed arms each engaging one of said straps adjacent the crossing thereof, said arms having flanges bent over said straps, said arms and said straps having parts thereof offset transversely to provide an interlocking connection between each arm and one of said straps.v
