Description

Dec. 3, 1929. E. "J. THURBER 1,738,157
BATTERY CONNECTION Filed Feb. 25. 1927 INVENTOR Ezra 4 Thurber Patented Dec. 3, 1929 PATENT OFFICE EZRA J. THURBER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON BATTERY commotion Application filed Februaly 23, 1927. Serial No. 170,075.
The invention is a device that may be placed over and readily held to a battery post for forming a positive and at the same time readily removable connection.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and economical means for readily attaching a wireto a battery post.
Another object of the invention is to. provide a device that may readily be attached to to a battery post without using bolts or nuts.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide a positive battery connection which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a member having an opening that may readily be placed over a battery post, an eccentric member which is of an elliptical shape so that it may be given a one quarter turn to grip the battery post, and a post to which a wire may be connected.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be seen from the following de scription taken in connection with the drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a side view of the device with part broken away showing it attached to a battery post.
Figure 2 is a plan view with part broken W away.
In the drawings the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral 1 indi- 1 cates the member which may be made of any suitable material and of any suitable design. An opening 2 is provided in the lower side which is slightly larger than a battery post and a transverse opening as indicated by the numeral 3 is provided M through the member 1 and arranged so that an elliptical member 4 placed through it will extend into the opening 2 and engage an objecttherein.
The member 4 is made as shown with a flat portion 5 at one end by which it may be rotated and a'pin 6 at the opposite end for holding it in the opening. On the sides of the member 4 which are on the long axis of the ellipse are threads 7 asoshown. It will be observed that these threads will cut into the post and prevent the member 1: moving longitudinally to free the post so that once the device is in place it will be positively locked until the member 4 is rotated until the long axis is vertical so that the device will be free from the post. A threaded post 8 having a nut 9 thereon is provided at one end of the member 1 so that a wire may be readily attached to it.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, one of which changes may be in the design or the arrangement of the member 1, another may be in the type of threads used on the edges of the member 4 or in their omission altogether, and still another may be in the use of other means for attaching a wire to the device.
The construction may be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device it may be provided as shown and described and when it is desired to make a connection to a battery post it may be placed over the post as shown with the long axis of the member 4 in the vertical position. The member 4 may then be moved inward until it binds the post against the opposite wall of the opening 2 and then so given one quarter of a turn which will force the threads 7 into the post as shown so that the device will positively grip the post and be locked thereon until the member 4 is turned back to the original position. 5 This will therefore provide a very simple and eflicient battery connection which may readily be attached to or removed from the battery post.
Having thus fully described the inven- I i 2 I I 1,738,115?
'tion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
- In a battery connection, a socket adaptable to be placed over a battery 0st and a tapered elliptical rotatable mem er freely mounted in an opening perpendicular to the axis of the said socket and having teeth on the edges of the longitudinal axis thereof, said freely mounted member being adapt- 10 able to gri an object in the said socket as I it is rotated in such a manner that the teeth mzglbe forced into the said object. t testimony whereof I afiix my signa- I are.
