The present invention relates to electric railways and more especially to the overhead line material by which the trolley wire is suspended in operative position above the right of way.
The object of my invention is the provision of an improved pull-ofl' for trolley wires which shall be capable of application at any angle thereto and freely to allow longitudinal shifting of the trolley wires incident to adjustments and variations in tension thereon. One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation and part section of a double pull-off rod with an improved car at each end thereof; Fig. 2 is a top plan of the same; and Fig. 3 is an exploded view in perspective of the component parts of the improved car, a fragment of the pull-ofl' rod, and the trolley wire.
The ear shown in the drawing is designed for use on trolley wires from which electric current is transmitted to the vehicle by means of a bow collector such as is used on electrified steam railways.
The ear comprises two vertical clamping members 1 and 2 provided at their lower sides with shouldered jaws 3 and 4 for engagement with a trolley wire 5 upon the turning home of a transverse bolt 6 which passes freely through member 1 and engages a tapped hole in member 2. I
The clamping member 1 has an arcuate or semi-cylindrical flange 7 extending downward from a flat horizontal top wall 8 in which are formed three apertures 9, 10 and 11. The aperture 9 is circular and located at the center of the semi-cylindrical flange 7 and the apertures 10 and 11 are triangle shaped and located on opposite sides of the center aperture with the bases thereof in alignment and spaced in parallelism to the front of the member 1 and designed to serve as fulcrums 12 for the companion member 2.
The clamping member 2 is substantially in the form of a flat slab with two curved horns 13 extending upwardly from its top edge and positioned to extend through the apertures 10 and 11 and overhang the fulcrums 12 so that upon the turning home of the bolt 6 they serve definitely to position the clamping member 2 with its aw 4 horizontally opposite the jaw 3 on theclamping member 1.
The horizontal tension member or pull-off rod 14 has its ear engaging end made somewhat Z-shaped, the tip of which is directed vertically and made cylindrical so as to pass through the aperture 9 of the ear and serve as a pintle 15 about which the car may swivel through an angle of about The short radial arm 16 extends from the pintle 15 to the inner shoulder of the semi-cylindrical flange 7 so that the vertical portion 17 may bear thereon and transmit the horizontal pullofi' stress to the ear, and in order that the leverage through which the stress is exerted on the ear may be at a minimum the flange 7 and the vertical bearing portion 17 of the pull-off have their line of contact as close to the'level of the trolley wire as possible and still provide room for the main portion 20 of the pull-off member to clear the lower edge of the flange 7 and also clear. the path of travel of the bow-shaped current collector (not shown) as it passes along the lower side of the wire.
The pull-off rod 14 may be single ended or double ended, the latter construction being as indicated in Figs. 1 and'2, whereas in the former construction it will have instead (iii of provision for receiving one of the trolley I wire cars a mere eye or loop to which a tension wire may be joined in the well known manner.
The several parts are assembled by applying the clamping member 1 to the pintle 15, introducing the clamping member 2 into place and inserting the bolt 6 a greater or less distance in the threaded aperture of the kid What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is: y
l. A pull-oil for trolley Wires comprising a pull-ofi rod, two Wire clamping members pivotally engaging an end of said rod, and means to hold said clamping members in assembled relation to each other and in freely pivoting relation to said rod.
2. A pull-off for trolley Wires comprising a pull-elf rod having a'pintle at the end thereof, a Wire clamping member having a rightangled top apertured for the reception of said pintle, second clamping member fulcrumed upon the first-mentioned clamping member and extending close beneath the pintle end of said rod, and means to tension said clamping members upon a trolley Wire.
3. A pull-off for trolley Wires comprising apull-off rod having an angular bearing surface adjacent an end thereof, a Wire clamping member having an arcuate flange the top thereof adapted to engage the angular bearing surface of said rod, a second clamping member fulcrumed upon the first-mentioned clamping member, and means to tension said clamping members upon a trolley Wire.
4. A pull-off for trolley Wires comprising" a pull-0E rod having a vertical p" the at an end thereof and a- Vertical bearing surface adjacent thereto a Wire clamping member with a horizontal top Wall apertured for the reception of said pintle and having; a depending arcuate flange to engage the ver- 1 tical bearing surface of said rod, a second clamping member fulcrumed in the ton Wall of said first-mentioned clan ping member on opposite sides of said, pintle, and means to tension said clamping members upon a trolley Wire.
