SHIRT STUD 0R BUTTON.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,345, dated May 19, 1857.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that We, VILLIAM Voor and Jol-1N J. KLINK, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, State of Kentucky, have invented a nenT and Improved Shirt Stud or Button; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in providing` the upper part of a shirt stud or button, letter A, (of any of the ordinary shapes and di1nensions,) With av Cross bar B, to secure the stud or button in its place in the garment, also providing a hook O, at the bottoni of the stud, to keep it up, and cover the hole in the garment. The length of the bar B, will be regulated by the size of the hole; that is, t-he bar B, niust be a little less than twice as long as the bnttonhole.

To use our improved shirt stud or button it is only necessary to hold the button, With its bar B, running in the saine direct-ion as the'buttonhole, insert one end through the hole, slide it down as far as the shank of the bar will permit; insert the other half of the bar B, then turn the button quarter around, and it is secure in its place. To insure its security, and cover the bnttonhole raise the stud up and insert the hook (l in the hole. The stud is thus supported in its place by the hook C, and effeetually prevented froin falling by the bar B.

What We claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Shirt studs or buttons, sleeve buttons, breast pins or any article of jewelry or ornament, lnade with the bar, B, and the hook C, for the purpose and in the manner substantially as described.
