This invention relates to improvements in locomotives or trucks and has as its object to provide an improved construction affording relative flexibility of the supporting wheels andfaxles so as to readily follow uneven track.
A usual type of construction of locomotives comprises a plurality of axles with support ing wheels thereon. Said axles are journaled in suitable axle boxes carried by the locomotive :trameV and have springs interposed between each axle box and the frame. Such a constructionfallowsthe ends of an axle to move vertically a limited distance, depending upon the resiliency of the springs, thereby affording limited flexibility of movement of opposite ends of the axle.
In my present invention, I provide an equalizing device in which the opposite ends of an axle have a bell crank lever interposed 2o between them and the frame and are connected together by a transversely extending member pivotally connected to a transverse' Hoor member of the frame so as to allow the axle to swing in a vertical plane independent l lof the resiliency of the springs.
My invention may be more clearly understood by referring to the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of one type of locomotive having my invention Y embodied therein;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of one type of locomotive with parts of the motor shell and wheel broken away to more clearly show my invention; c
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front end view of a locomotive with parts broken away and in section to show the details of my invention' Figure 4 is a fragmentary view showing the connection of one arm of one of the bell crank levers to a transverse bar connecting the two bell crank levers together; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a spring saddle used in my invention.
In the drawings, one embodiment of my invention is illustrated as applied to a locomotive frame having side plates 2, 2, an axle 3 and supporting wheels 4, 4. Suitable journal boxes 5, 5, are mounted adjacent opposite ends of the axle and are movable vertically between oppositely disposedguide plates of a pedestal 7, 7 which may be of any suitable construction.

The locomotive frame is supported on' the ) ournal boxes 5, 5, through lthe'medium of an equalizing device constructed as follows: A pair of bell crank levers 9, 9, are pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the locomotive frame above their respective axle boxes to swing in a vertical plane longitudinally of the locomotive. The bell crank levers are pivotally mounted on the locomotive frame by means of two bearing pins 10, 10, supported in brackets 1l, 11, carried on the side plates 2, 2, of said locomotive frame. One arm 12 of the bell crank lever 9 extends from its axis rearwardly to a saddle 14. Springs 15 15 coV which may be of the usual helical type or Ytheir equivalent are interposed between each of the journal boxes 5, 5, and the spring saddles 14, 14.` In Figures 2 and 5 it may be seen that the'saddle14 has a pair of ribs 14a. projecting upwardly therefrom which have-a curved recess therein to receive a heel 123L of the lever arm12of the bell crank lever 9. An other arm 16 Yof the bell crank lever 9 extends downwardly from its pivotal axis to a trans verse pivotally movable bar 18 for connecting the two bell crank levers together.
Y Figure 4 shows a detailv of the connection of thev arm 16 to the transverse bar 18.* It may be. seen that the lower portion of the arm 16 projects through an aperture 18a in the bar 18 and that the lower portion of said arm is isrecessed to it around the bar 18 and that saidv recess 4 A bearing surface Afor the arm. 16 on the transverse bar 18. Clearance is allowed in the recessed portion of the arm 16 toyallowed for the arcuate movement of said arm. The transverse bar 18is pivotally mounted lat its central portion to pivot von a vertical axis on a floor or bottom plate 2() which joins the lside plates 2, y2, of the locomotivejframe. A

The arrangement 'is such that vertical movement of one axle box will cause movement of one bell crank lever which will move the transverse bar 18 about its pivotal axis and therefore move the opposite bell lcrank lever in the opposite direction which will lin turn move the axle box connected to said bell crank lever in an op osite di-rection to that kof the. iirst named ax e box.
In applying my invention to a locomotive of the two axle type, it isrpreferable to mount one of the axles in the usual manner, that is to say, Without any equalizing device to afford the desired stability to the frame, While the othersupporting axle` is mounted as above described so as to afford? a 'wide range of ilexibility with respect to the frame and the one stabilizing axle connected' therewith. Byv means ofthis arrangement the -load lis maintained evenlyl on all ofthe supporting wheels While moving` over uneven track.
Although I--have shown and described one formin which my `invention may be embodied, itwill be understood that the construction Vand `the arrangement of the various partsmay bealtered Without departing from the spinitqand scope thereof. Furthermore, I do not wish to'be construedY as limiting myself'to the specific embodiment villustrated in the drawings, exce ting as it may limited by the appended ciiims.
