Application filed March 9, 1928. Serial No. 260,507,
My inventionrelates to dump bodies.
t is the object of my invention to provide a dump body which can be elevated and lowered by a means which is flexible in one direction for telescoping andstoringpurposes, but which is inflexible in another direction for elevating purposes. It is my object to provide such a means in combination with the power device, pref erably driven from the engine of a truck for elevating the truck body.
It is a further. objectto provide means for automatically limiting the application of the power for elevating for lowering the body so, that each movement will be automatically terminated by disconnecting the power. Manual control is provided for applying this power for starting the elevating, but is so arranged as to not permit the elevating to be extended beyond a safe limit by the manual means. Likewise the lowering cannot be extended by the manual means beyond the safe lowering limit, but the manual means can start and stop the movement in either direction and can control the movement intermediate the starting and lowering limits.

the pivotally mounted roller frame. Figure 9 isa rear elevation thereof.

COMPANY,
Figure 11 is a section on thefline 11 -;11
of Figure 10. i Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 represents supplementary side me'mbers connected by the bolts 2, which are in spaced relationship and are mounted upon the usual truck frame, attached thereto by any de.- sired means such as .U bolts, .which are strapped around the supplementary "frame members 1 and connectedto the main frame. These details do not form any part of;the present invention but follow conventional practice. Between these side members 1 extends pivot shaft 3, on which are mounted pivot brackets on either side thereof, designated '4, the upper ends of which, as at 5, are attached to the frame member 6 of the truck body 7 The forward end of this truck body, when in horizontal position, has its bottom frame member 6 resting upon the transverseangle iron members 8 and 9.located in spaced .relationship transversely of the supplementary frame members 1 at the forward end thereof, adjacent the cab 10. T Between the supplementary frame -memlbers 1 carried on suitable transversesupports 11, is a trough 12 adapted to contain the elevating chain 13, which is telescoped therein. The forward end of this trough is turned upwardly, as at 14. The ,transverseangle irons 8 and 9 are connected together by longitudinally extending, spaced frame members 15 and 16, being connected thereto by suitable bolts 17 and angle irons 18. The forward end of the trough 14 is connected by thebolts 17 to the forward transverse frame membe]? 9. V i
Mounted on these longitudinally extending frame members ,15 and 16 are journal blocks 19 and 20 thatlare interconnected, by
ried the shaft 22, which is the driven shaft of'the combination. x
Mounted on this driven shaft is the chain the strap 21. In these journals there is'caractuating pinion 23, which is adapted jtoengage with the teeth 24 of the chain links 25, which are connected together by. the pivot bolts 26 passingthrough the projections 27 and theoverlapping ears 28 of alternate, adj a- VT vating member, as the upper end of the chain cent chain blocks; Pivotally mounted on either side of the pinion 23, on the shaft 22, are the side frame plates 29 and 30 of the swinging roller frame. The forward ends of these frames are interconnected by a guard plate 31. V
Within this guard plate 31 is a pair of transverse roller shafts 32 and 33, carrying rollers 34 .and35 which engage with the rear smooth surface 36 of the chain blocks. These blocks are so arranged as to permit of movement towards each other in one direction but are prevented from movement toward each other in the other direction heyond a plane running through the longitudinal axes of the blocks so that in one direction the blocks, when so moved, present a stiff, rigid structure in a single plane, but in the ot er direction may be bent to follow around "go the rollers and dpinion 23.
The lower en of these side frames 29 and 30,'designated 36, carry a roller shaft 37 which in turn supports a roller 38 below the "inion 23 that engages the toothside of the Blocks ofthe'chain, causing the blocks to make a s ubstantially right angle turn about 7 the center of the shaft 37 as the blocks move from the telescoping trough 12 in a horizontal plane to a vertical and substantially rearwardly extending plane necessary for the elevati'on of the forward end of the truck body, to which the upper block is pivoted in the 7 following manner. I p
The upper block is pivoted to a bolt 39, which bolt is carried in the ears 40 between which the upper end of the block projects. These ears 40 are mounted upon a pivot block 41 adapted to have some lateral movement by reason of the cutaway portions 42 where the block is pivoted upon the shaft 43 carried in the ears 44 of the plates 45, which are bolted by the bolts 46 to the bottom of the forward end of the dump body.
This block 41 is provided with a depending finger 47 that serves to maintain the block in its proper predetermined position, as will be seen in Figure 4, so that it cannot buckle with respect to the next block and the initial stages of elevating the body.
The purpose of pivotally mountingrthe roller frame side plates 29 and 30 is to permit V throws the clutch so that the shaft 22 will of the movement of these plates and frame with the rollers to cause the chain to'niaintain itself in the same plane as a stiff elemoves backwardly due to the arcuate movement of the body, to which it is attached,
7 which is remotely pivoted on the rod 3 at the 00 rear end of the truck.
To insure this coordinated movement I have 7 provided thefollowing mechanism. The upper end of the frame is connected to a yoke 48, the'pivoting being at 49. The free'end .65 or this-y ke i a -we Connected a thereby permit the chain to buckle during.
the rod 79, again shifting the clutch to neutral forming an eye 54. Through this eye 54 is projected a clutch shifting rod 55 having a head 56 adapted upon occasion'of the body reaching its uppermost position to engage with the side 57 of the eye 54, so thatthe continued upward movement of the body serves to pull the upwardly moving clutch shifting rod-55, thereby bringing about a declutching of the power line and a cessation ofupward movement on the part of the body.
This rod 55 is connected at its lower end to a bell crank, being pivotally connected at 58 to the bell crank arm 59, which is pivoted at upon the gear casing 61. This arm 59 is also connected to the manually operated rod 62, which extends to a point adjacent the operator in the cab 10 in the usual manner. a
" This pivotal clutch shifting rod 60 is provided with a yoke 61 within the gear casing 61, and a notch 63 inwhich fits a plunger 64, spring pressed by the spring 65 to maintain it in neutral, elevating or lowering 'positions. The yoke 61 fits: within a groove 66 of a collar 67, which has side shoulders 68 and 69 for engaging withthe clutch pin 69 of the respective bevel gears 70 and 71, which are driven by the bevel pinion 72 by the power shaft 73 from the truck motor.
' This clutch sleeve 67 is mounted to turn with the shaft 74 and is splined thereon by the splinesleeve 75. The upper end of the shaft 74 is provided with a worm 76, which drives the worm gear .77, which is connected with a key 7 8 to the driven shaft 22.
When the truck body descends its bottom is adapted to engage with the top of the loweringmovement clutch shifting rod 79, which is connected atits lowerend to the arm of the bell crank, of which the arm 59 is the other half.
Method of-operation. V When the operator moves the rod 62 he be driven to elevate the roller chain through into position for lowering the body, and this operation will continue until the bottom of the body comes in contact with the top of inoperative position.
If the operator, during the course of either the upward movement or the downward movement, desires to halt the movement or reverse its direction, he can do so by operat ing the rod 62. I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may beclearly embraced within the claims and the scope of my invention."
