My invention relates to typewriting machines, and mainly to means for re istering the number of items written upon aiill or a succession of bills for telephone service and the'like.
At the completion of each item an amount is typed in the amount column of the bill. Consequently, in order to count the items it is necessary to count only the number of amounts typed in the amount column.
An object of my invention is to rovide a device which sets a'counting mec anism when an amount is typed in the amount column, and which operates the counting mechanism to register the item when the carriage is returned to its normal position for starting a line.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device for automatically registering each time the carriage of a typewriting machine is moved to the right for commencing a new line, thus serving to count the number of lines typed.
A further object is to provide an automatic registering device which may be readily attached to a standard typewriting machine without material alteration of the machine.
A further object is to provide a device which automatically sets a counting mechanism only when the carria c has reached a predetermined position, an automatically operates the counting mechanism to register only when the carriage is fully returned to its normal position for starting a line. Obviously, a device for automatically counting the items is not confined to telephone service work, but may be used in bookkeeping machines or the like, wherever it is de- 0 sired to count the number of items or lines typed.
In the present invention a counter is mounted on the side of the frame of a typewriting machine, and has attached to its shaft a 5 rocker-arm, to which is pivoted a link which extends inwardly into the machine and under the carriage. The carriage is provided with a lug which engages 2. lug on the link when the carriage reaches a certain position, such 0 as the amount column of a telephone bill.
During the ty in after this position has been reached,t l ie lug operates to disengage the link from a stop, thus allowing a spring within the counter to move the rocker-arm and link counterclockwise. During this movement a pawl within the counter ratchets over the counter-actuator. When the carriage is returned to its normal position for starting a line, a downwardly-projecting lug mounted on the end of the carriage-frame engages a second lug on the link to move the rocker-arm clockwise and'restore the link to its initial position where it is revented from clockwisemovement by the a ove-mentioned sto During the latter movement, when the roc er-arm' is rotated clockwise, the pawl in the counter engages the counter-actuator to register the item.

Referrin to the drawings, a counter 1, which may of the Veeder cyclometer type, is shown secured to a bracket 22 by means of screws 26, the upper portion of the bracket havin a portion bent to form a hook or yoke 23 which passes through a U-shaped depression 27 in the horizontal portion 25 of the left-hand frame 28 of a standardUnderwood typewriting ma hine. The Width of the yoke 23 is such as to cause this portion of the bracket to fit snugly between the walls of the U-shaped depression 27, and the lower end of the bracket is fastened to an upstanding extension 21 of the frame 28 by means of a screw 24, the bell usually mounted upon the extension 21 having been removed. A rockcr-arm 2 mounted on the shaft 13 of the counter to actuate the register-wheels in the \vell-lmmv-n manner. During counterclockwise movement of the rocker-arm 2', i. e., movement towards the face of the counter, the register-wheels are not affected andthe counter registers only when the arm is moved in a clockwise direction. "The spring 29 within the counter tends at all timesto move the rocker-arm 2 counterclockwise.
Pivoted to the rocker-arm 2 is a. link 3 which is cut out on its under side to provide a shoulder 4 which slides through the slot 30 in the upturned portion 12 of yoke 23. When the carriage has been moved fully to the right so that it is. in position for starting a line, the shoulder 4 will engage the right side of upturned portion 12, which serves as a stop to prevent counterclockwise movement of the rocker-arm. At its right extremity, the. link 3 is provided with a vertical h o 17 and a forwardly-extending horizontal ange 5.
Mounted in a, predetermined position on the rod. 11 by means of screws 10 is a metal plate 6 having a forwardly-extending horizontal flange. 7 at its upper end, and a. rearwardly-extending horizontal flange 8. at. the bottom. At one of its lower corners the plate 6 is provided with a. downwardly-extending lug having a rearwardly-extending inclined flange 9. The plate 6 is positioned so that the flange 9 will engage the flange 5 at the instant the carriage moves to the position for typing in the amount column 38 of a bill.
A metal plate 19 is fastened to the can riage-release lever 20, and has. 9. lug l8 WlllCll is so positioned that it will engage the vertical lug 17 on the link 3 when the carriage is moved toward the position for starting a. line. The carriage and the link 3 move together until further movement of the carriage is prevented by the fixed stop 37. When that position is reached, the shoulder 4 has passed over stop 12 and the link 3 drops, on account of the cut-out portion 3 so that the shoulder 4 will engage the right side of the stop 12.
In operation, an item is typed on the worksheet 35, the carriage movim to the left, step by step, with the typing oi each character. Whenthc amountcolumn 38 is reached, as the carriage moves to the left, the inclined flange 9 engages the horizontal flange 5 on link 3, and gradually cams the link 3 upward until the shoulder 4 is disengaged from the stop 12, at which time the spring 29 moves .the link 3 and. rocker-arm 2 is a counterclockwise direction. The flange 8 limits the upward movement of link 3 thus preventing the link from jumping out of the slot 30. While the rocker-arm and link are moving, the arm 14, car ing the pawl 32, ratchets over ratchet-whee 31 until the stop 15 is reached. Thus far the counter only been set and has made no registration of the item. After typing'the item, the operator line-spaces in preparation-for the next item, at the same time returning the carriage to the right to the starting position. While the carriage is being moved tothe right, the lug 18, on the carriagerrelease lever 20, engages the vertical lug 17 on link 3 and draws the link to the right, thus rotatin rocker-arm 2 and shaft 13 in a. clockwise direction, which movement causes. pawl 32 to move in the same direction to engage ratchet-wheel 31 to actuate the registering mechanism. The last typed item has now been registered. and will show on the face 33 of the counter. The rocker-arm moves clockwise until the arm 14 engages stop 16. By this time further movement of the carriage is prevented by stop 37 and the shoulder 4 has passed over the stop 12, and the link 3 drops downwardly due to the cutaway portion 34. This downward movement is sufficient to disengage lugs 17 and 18, and the shoulder 4 contacts against the right side of stop 12. The device is now in position to repeat its operations for registering the next item to be typed.
It is seen from the above description that I have provided a novel and effective device for registering each item or line typed by actuating the counter every time the carriage is returned to starting position. The plate 6 is adjustably mounted on the rod 11, and may be placed in any desired position along the rod in order to accommodate work-sheets of ditferent sizes, or difi'erent arrangements of columns.
In Figure 7 I have shown a modified form of my de ice for use with narrow work-sheets. In this form the plate 19, attached to the lever 20, is provided with a lug 18 which is longer than the lug 18 so that it may engage the portion 36 of the link 3 during travel of the carriage to the right. The lug 1'7 is therefore not necessary in the modified form. Otherwise, the operation of the modified form is thesame as that described for the form shown in Figures 1 to 6.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, in ccnibination, a carriage, a frame, a counting device having a rocker-arm tending at all times to move in a counterclockwise direction, said counting device registering only when the rocker-arm is moved in a clockwise direction,
detent mechanism for restraining the rockerarm against counterclockwise movement, means carried by the carriage to release the detent mechanism so that the rocker-arm may move in a counterclockwise direction, and other means carried by the carriage for moving the rocker-arm in a clockwise direction to cause the counter to register when the carriage is moved to its normal position for commencing a line.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combina tion, a carriage having a normal position for starting a line of typing, a frame, a counter mounted on the frame and having a rockerarm for actuating the countin mechanism only when moved in a clockwise direction, detent mechanism for preventing the counter clockwise movement of the rocker-arm, cammeans on the carriage for releasin the detent mechanism during the travel of t e carriage towards the left, and means on the carriage for moving the rocker-arm in a clockwise direction when the carriage is moved to the right to normal starting position.
3. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a frame, a counting device mounted on the frame, a link pivoted to said counting device, said link having at one extremity a vertical lug and a'horizontal lug, a cam-member mounted on said carriage to engage the horizontal In on the link to release the link for counterc ockwise movement, and a lug mounted on the carriage to engage the vertical lug on said link for clockwise movement so that the counter will register each time the carriage is moved fully to the ri ht.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a frame, a counter mounted on the frame, said counter having a springcontrolled shaft with a rocker-arm attached thereto, and normally movable in a counterclockwise direction, a stop to prevent such movement, a link pivoted to the rocker-arm, said link having at one extremity a vertical lug and a horizontal lug, a cam-piece'mounted on the carriage and engageable with the horizontal lug to release the link from the stop so that it may move counterclockwise, and a lug on the carriage engageable with the vertical lug to move the link in a clockwise direction when the carriage is returned to its normal position for starting a line.
5. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a frame, a counting device mounted on said frame, a cam-piece mounted on the carriage, connections'between the campiece and the counter for setting the registering mechanism in position to be actuated, and means on the carriage for actuating the registering mechanism when the carriage is moved to the normal position for starting a line of typing.
6. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a frame, a counting device mounted on the frame and havin a rocker-arm spring influenced to normall y move in a counterclockwise direction, a link pivoted to said rocker-arm and engageable with a stop to prevent counterclockwise movement of the rocker-arm, cam-means on the carriage to disengage the link from the stop when the carriage is moved towards the left, and other means on the carriage to move the link and. rocker-arm in a clockwise direction when the carriage is fully returned to the right to its normal starting position.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a frame, a counting device mounted on the frame, means on the carriage for setting the counting device when the carriage has reached a predetermined position, and other means on the carriage for operating the counting device when the carriage is returned to the normal position for starting a line.
9. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a counting device mounted near the carriage, a work-sheet having a plurality of columns, connections between the carriage and the counting device to set the counting device when the carriage has moved sufiiciently so that characters may be typed in a predetermined column, and means on the carriage to operate the counting device when the carriage is returned to its normal position for starting a line.
10. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a counting device mounted near the carriage, a cam-member mounted on the carriage, connections between the cammember and the counting device to set the latter after the carriage has moved a predetermined distance to the left, and means on the carriage to operate the counting device whialn the carriage is fully returned to the rig t.
11. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a counting device mounted near the carriage, a cam-member settably mounted on the carriage, connections between the cam-member and the counting device to set the latter after the carriage has moved a predetermined lififiancq to the lei-t, and means on the carriage to cause the countingdevioe to register when the carriage is fully returned to the right.
