This invention relates to rivet setting machines, and has for its object to increase the field of application for such machines and to facilitate their operation with large or cumbersome articles requiring considerable clearance below the anvil and on substantially all sides thereof.
This application is a division of my application Serial No. 257,013, filed February 24;, 1928, .and in distinction from the embodiment specifically claimed therein, a particular object of the present invention is to provide greater vertical space, or clearance, for the article to be riveted, and this is accomplished by providing a vertical column supporting the anvil, in connection with other features, as fully set forth below, and herein claimed.

An ordinary standard 10 is surmounted by the usual head 11 carrying the customary rivet feeding mechanism 13 and rivet setting mechanism 12. Any known or suitable form of anvil 24; is directly supported on the upper end of a vertical column 23, and is adjustable vertically, by means of screw 23 and lock-nut 23 The column is secured to the free end of a horizontal arm 22, the other end of which is secured to the lower end of a bracket 21. The upper end of this bracket is secured to horizontal portion of head 11.
This bracket 21 includes a downwardly and outwardly extending arm 21 and also a vertical portion 21 Horizontal arm 22 is secured to bracket portion 21 by bolts 16 or in any other manner desired. The bracket 21 is preferably a casting, while arm 22 should be of steel to give the requisite strength for the anvil. The anvil may be of any desired Serial NO. 318,517.
shape to suit the particular type of rivet being used. The bracket 21 is secured to the head 11 in a manner to be described later in connection with Fig. 3.
In the present embodiment, in distinction from the first form illustrated in the parent application, above identified, the bracket 21 extends to a greater distance below the anvil 24, the supporting column 23 being interposed between the anvil and lateral arm 22. Having the bracket extend a considerabe dis tance below the anvil provides increased clearance below the anvil on all of its sides. I
The bracket is preferably clamped to the horizontal portion of the head 11, as illustrated, just below the pivot of the actuating lever 20 and as shown in Fig. 3 this connection is by means of bolts 26 passing throu h the head 11 and through the base of t e bracket 21. For convenience in seating the bolt heads a spacing washer 27 is provided of a shape to conform to the outlines of the head member 11. The aforementioned actuating lever 20 is pivoted above the head 11 within the bifurcated portion 25.
I claim:
1. The combination with a rivet setting mechanism, of a supporting head therefor, a standard carrying said head and mechanism, an anvil, and supporting means for said anvil extending laterally downwardly and outwardly from said head to a position below said anvil and including a lateral arm secured to the lower portion of said means, and a column supporting said anvil from the unsupported end portion of said arm.
2. The combination with a rivet setting mechanism, of a supporting head therefor, a
standard carrying said head and mechanism, an anvil, and supporting means for said anvil extending laterally downwardly and outwardly from said head to a position below said anvil and including a lateral arm secured to the lower portion of said means, and a column supporting said anvil from the unsupported end portion of said arm, said supporting means extending substantially below the anvil by an amount about equal to the height of said column. a
3. The combination with a rivet setting mechanism, of a supporting head therefor, a standard carrying said head and mechanism, an anvil, and supporting means for said anvil secured to said head and comprising a bracket extending outwardly and downwardly away from said head, a horizontal arm, and a vertical column thereon supporting the anvil at its upper'end.
