Filed Feb. 118, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 TTORNEY Patented Oct. 8, 1929 EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN SALES BOOK COMPANY, LIMITED, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, A CORPORATION OF ONTARIO, CANADA sALns BOOK Application filed February 18, 1924. Serial No. 693,424.
This invention relates to a sales book adapted to make an original and four copies of the sales record in a new and improved manner.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved device of the character described in which a plurality of the sheets may be removed as a unit from the book and handled as a unit and removed one by one from each other as desired.
Other objects will be in part obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features,
properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which. will be indicated in the claim.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of this invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 represents a sales book embodying this invention and Fig. 2 illustrates a modified form thereof.
In so far as similar parts are common to the two modifications, the same reference characters will be used in both.
Referring more particularly to Figure 1, the numeral 1 designates a pad of sets of leaves 2, each set being composed of four leaves, an original 3 and underleaves 4, 5 and 6, all joined together at the bottom as shown at 7, the sets being retained together by a projection 8 upon the under leaf 6.
..These projections may be bound together by staples 9 to form the pad 1. Each of the sheets 3, 4, 5 and 6 may be provided with 4 weakened portions 10, 11, 12 and L- to permit their removal from each other, and a second weakened portion may be provided on the sheet 6 near the projection 8 as shown at 14 to permit the removal of all of the said sheets from the book as a unit. A second pad 15 is so arranged that its sheets 16 may be interleaved between the sheets of each set 2 consecutively.
As illustrated, the pad 1 may be attached to a back 17 which is folded as at 18 to form an underlying back 19 to be bound into and serve as a support for the second pad 15. There is thus provided between the back 17 and the back 19 a pocket 20 in which certain leaves of the pad 15 may be inserted when desired. Suitable carbon sheets may be bound within the pad 1 adapted to be interleaved between the different sheets to cause the transfer of the record to them.
In this form the sheets 3 and 6 are in the form of a strip of paper, folded in approximately the middle, and the sheets 4 and 5 are in the form of a strip of translucent material folded in the middle and attached to the first mentioned strip at the fold, and carbons 21 and 22, each bearing transfer material upon both faces are bound within the pad 1.
In this modification there is bound within the pad 1 two sheets of transfer material 21 and 22. The lowermost sheet 21 is carbonized only upon its under face, while the upper sheet 22 is carbonized on both faces. The carbon sheet 22 contains sufficient material to be doubled upon itself so as to providea duplex carbon sheet having parts 2 1 and 25 for insertion between different record sheets as shown so as to effect the desired transfer of records to the record sheets. In the embodiment'shown, the sheet or strip 22 is of sufficient length to be folded upon a transverse line intermediate its length so as to provide the duplex parts 24 and 25.
In using the book the lowermost carbon 21 may be inserted between the leaves 5 and 6. and thereupon the carbon sheet 22 may be overlaid upon it and the appropriate sheet 26 from the pad 15 superposed thereon. The
When the record has been eompletedthe sheets 3, 4, 5 and 6 may be removed from the book as a unit and handled as such through dilferent department of the establishment as desired, and any department may remove the sheet appropriate to its use from the set Without disturbing the other sheets. Upon the completion of the record furthermore the salesclerk may insert the sheet 26 bearing the inscription within the pocket to prepare for the insertion of the succeeding sheet 16 in itscappropriate place within the next succeeding set 2 of leaves.
In the modification illustrated in Figure I 2 a cover 27- may .be provided with clips as at 119 for holding a separate pad 115' and the cover may also have a hinged portion 117 for supporting the pad 1. There is thus provided beneath the flap 117 a pocket 120 adapted to receive the leaves from the pad 115 when desired In this form the carbonsheets may comprise two double sheet carbons bound within the pad 1, one of which as sheet 22 may be inserted between the leaves 5 and 6, and one as sheet 21 may be inserted between the leaf 4 and the leaf 126 of the pad 115.
In using the book the lower carbon sheet 22 may be inserted between the sheets 5 and 6 and the first or corresponding sheet of the pad 115 laid there'over. Thereupon the carbon 21 may be superposed upon it and the sheets 3 and 4 laid over it. Any inscription upon the original sheet 3 will thus be transferred to the back of the sheet 4 and to the upper face of the sheet 126 by the carbon 21, and to the back of the sheet 5 and the upper face of the sheet 6 by the carbon 22. The sheets of a set may be arranged in a different order if desired, but those sheets on which the impression is made upon the reverse side should conveniently be made of translucent material.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained inthe above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claim is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invenfolded strip at the fold, a second pad of leaves and means for supporting the same at the side of said first mentioned pad in position to have its leaves interleaved with those of the first mentionedpad, said second mentioned strip being of translucent material and two sheets of double faced carbon bound within said pad in position to be inserted between the leaves of each set successively.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE.
